Hello to Dr Kermode

DogFacedBoy's picture

as he namechecked the Massive as a bunch of idiot cumudgeons last week for hating the 'hello to......' bit. And as we know he is always right.

They've gone and given the lion's share of Simon Mayo's old slot to the idiot boy that is Richard 'slightly-uncomfortable-when-talking-about-other people's-drug-scandals' Bacon. He's equally incapable of dealing with serious and lighthearted subjects.

Shame, I used to like afternoons on Radio 5 before Danny Baker starts elsewhere. At least the Mayo\Kermode show remains the same

The Massive

are right and the good Doctor is wrong. The "hello to...." bit is the most smug, annoying and tedious bit of radio on any station.

yup -

esoteric nonsense. A mildly irritating section in an otherwise excellent podcast.

0
badartdog | 20 October 2009 - 2:41pm

am I the only person in the world

who had never heard of Jason Isaacs before the Mayo / Kermode podcast?

Sid Williams | 20 October 2009 - 9:53pm

Gets worser...

It's even worse than you might think DFB; Gabby Logan is on 12-2 immediately before the erst-while Blue Peter presenter.
That's a double poo sandwich with an extra side helping of not being able to read a computer screen.
When will 5Live not realise Gabby Logan is tremendous on the TV but rubbish on the radio?
And Danny B seemed to confirm on Sunday he wasn't going to be going to Manchester so only one series of that then.
Har, and indeed, rumph.

Danny Baker move to Manchester?

As if that was ever going to happen!

0
Simon Ford | 20 October 2009 - 5:17pm

Why is it essential

Why is it essential presenters move to Manchester?

0
chrisodonoghue | 20 October 2009 - 9:11pm

Manchester move

5Live (along with BBC Sport, Children's Dept, online and future development depts) is moving to Media City in Manchester next year.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediacity:uk
It has been claimed that little or none of the live 5Live output will be done from London.

0
PaddyH | 20 October 2009 - 9:21pm

I think because

the whole point of the BBC upping sticks is to prove it isn't so London-centric and if all the presenters stayed in London it would do little to justify the cost or the thinking behind the move.

Just as London is about to host the biggest sporting event on the planet, moving most of your sports team 200 miles away from London seems nonsensical anyway.

0
Simon Ford | 20 October 2009 - 9:26pm

The 2012 issue

does somewhat throw the plan into confusion, but there'll still be a BBC after the month of the two Olympics and devolution and regionalisation issues mean that some decentralisation make sense.
Also the move to a media city is pretty far sighted, I think.
Having said that what happens after the Tories get in is anyone's guess. Will the licence fee/ charter commitment to nations and regions mean anything anymore?

0
PaddyH | 20 October 2009 - 9:32pm

The BBC

has managed to cover Olympics more than 200 miles away before though, hasn't it?
It also makes further sense in the case of news and sport.
Most British football, rugbys etc happen outside of London. The news isn't London-centric, so it makes sense for the news network to get out, while the other departments move closer to growing independent producers in the North (and beyond) and Midlands.

PaddyH | 20 October 2009 - 9:37pm

The only effect

it may have is less in studio celeb quests and more down the line from London.

Which if it means no more Kevin Spacey popping in would be a shame

It's politcal correctness gone mad

You couldn't imagine TF1 moving its operations from Paris to Marseille or TVE moving from Madrid to Bilbao.

London is the capital city, it's where most things happen, it's where most of the major (Wimbledon, Internationals) sporting events happen, it's where most of the celebrities come through, it's where politics happens. These are facts that instead of pretending otherwise, the BBC should just have accepted and got on with it.

I can't really see that moving a sport and current affairs station away from where everything happens is far-sighted.

Simon Ford | 21 October 2009 - 9:16am

Amazing isn't it.....

5 Live already have two excellent presenters in Rachel Burden and Phil Williams, both currently "fill in", yet choose to continue to mine the tried and failed route of ex TV presenters.

Daft.

1
Six Dog | 20 October 2009 - 1:42pm

And Asmah Mir...

Rachel Burden and Asmah Mir must be wondering what they have to do to get a permanent daytime weekday slot. Two of the best broadcasters anywhere - able to interview authoritatively on a range of subjects and can, unlike Gaby Logan, read a script. Asmah, good Scots lass that she is, also supports the one true footballing faith.

0
PaddyH | 20 October 2009 - 7:11pm

Five Live have the best women presenters...

...on radio. Why the likes of Anita Anand, Asmah Mir and Eleanor Oldroyd don't get linked more with these high profile slots I don't know.

0
David Hepworth | 21 October 2009 - 9:36am

The hello to bit...

... here's where my geek thing comes in. Jason Isaacs, David Morrissey, Stphen Fry and Michael Sheen all listen to the podcast, we know this.

But Focus, Pentangle? Where is the evidence? Did I miss that episode? Have some consistency in your in-jokery, that's all I ask!

0
ganglesprocket | 20 October 2009 - 2:10pm

I think

they might have met assorted members of Fairport n Pentangle at Cropredy over the past couple of years. No idea where Focus and landfill indie combo The Subways have come from.

0
DogFacedBoy | 20 October 2009 - 2:28pm

Most of the 'hellos'

come from one interview, when someone says, 'Oh, yes, I listen.'

The Subways hello came specifically because Mayo & Kermode realised that all their hellos were male, so they were hunting for a woman and Dr K met Charlotte from the Subways at a gig and she asked if he could say hello to her. Tedious, isn't it? I'm bored just typing it!

0
robram | 20 October 2009 - 5:06pm

Sheesh...

... that's all a bit desparate. At least Isaacs and Morrissey are fairly regular guests...

0
ganglesprocket | 20 October 2009 - 7:36pm

Didn't Focus

come from the letter F in the prog rock dictionary.? I am sure Simon Mayo also sent hellos to another couple of "F" proggers a few weeks back.

I can forgive them the hellos, it is a great show and my second favourite podcast after the Word.

1
GunsOfBrixton | 20 October 2009 - 7:52pm

Mark Radcliffe hinted at this...

...last night when he announced himself at the start of last night's show as 'here for forever' (or something similar). The rumours were that he was taking over fom Mayo, though not sure that would have been right for him anyway.

I like Gobby Logan on the radio.

Especially when she's knocking Nicky "Dr Smug" Campbell into shape. It also makes you forget she's bloody gorgeous and just concentrate on her being a good broadcaster.

0
Lenny Law | 20 October 2009 - 6:52pm

We'll agree to

disagree on her on-air presence, Lenny. Her Sunday morning programme is poor on every level.

0
PaddyH | 20 October 2009 - 9:25pm

Haven't listened to that properly.

Sunday mornings are spent cycling round Portsmouth with a small boy whilst FPO plays tennis. I've caught the end of it a couple of times and I'll agree it is a bit duff but I think that's the format rather than the presenter. I've only heard her sitting in on breakfast.

0
Lenny Law | 20 October 2009 - 9:37pm

Yep, you're right

Actually you might be right, she is probably better with current affairs than the knock-about magazines that run at the weekend. The format is just clunky.

0
PaddyH | 20 October 2009 - 9:40pm

fillers

gabby logan/richard bacon

for fuck's sake

oh well back to those right wing fuckers at talksport

0
junkiecosmonaut | 20 October 2009 - 11:02pm

This is bad

Logan and Bacon are both poor. For my money, the best stand-in for Mayo has been Colin Murray. Seemed like a smart, verstile bloke. I can't listen to Phil Williams. I'm sure he means well, but his constant references to the listener as "you" ("Stephen Fry will be talking to you after the news...") do my head in. Could have been worse, mind you - did anyone hear Fiona Phillips' stand in stint? Shockingly bad.

On the positive side, glad to see Peter Allen is sticking around on Drive. Until then, it'll be Spotify all day for me.
