Following on from the Brian Kennedy yopic posted earlier I was listening to some of his music on Spotify and came across Haynes The Ultimate Guide To Acoustic Songs - I thought they did car manuals not music albums!!!

Its actually a really good album

There

have been several of these 'Haynes' albums, the latest being a Christmas themed one surprisingly. I suppose they appeal to those of us of a certain age who remember when these manuals were a compulsory part of car ownership. Obviously this was before cars became glorified computers and it took someone like Bill Gates to repair or service it.

Why I think Coach Johnson should be nominated as the man of 1975

This takes me right back to the golden summer of 1975. Our teacher for Shop Class that year was Coach Johnson. He had been injured in a skiing accident and had reluctantly stepped down from his role as trainer of the Pumas - our college football team.

He set us to work stripping down and then rebuilding a second hand copy of Ventura Highway by the band - America. The Haynes Manual for this particular recording proved to be an invaluable guide and we all learned a lot from it. When the second verse proved to be damaged beyond repair we were able to use our new-found knowledge to patch it with parts scavenged from an old copy of Help Me Rhonda that we salvaged from a nearby junkyard.

I have never forgotten the sense of pride and achievement that I gained from this exercise, not to mention the money that we made by selling the fruits of our labour to a friend of David Soul.

I later used those $73 to fund a road trip to Tijuana, which is where I met the hermaphrodite lap dancer who would later become my life partner.

Kids don't do this kind of thing any more and I think it's a shame.
