Have you ever booed at a gig?

Four Eyes's picture

I've just read this bizarre piece on the Guardian website about a Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson and John Zorn free-improv gig that failed to please a section of the audience. Were they seriously expecting something they could sing along to?

It's got me thinking. I've never done it, but I'd wager some of the more vocal Massive have made some disparaging noises from the stalls. Do any of you have any good gig-booing stories? Who did you boo? What triggered it? Come on, spill some boo beans.

Yes, Noel Gallagher

He was end-of-show special guest of The Black Crowes at a gig at the Brixton Academy in 1999 (I think).

I did it purely because I don't like Oasis. Even at the time I remember thinking he didn't particularly deserve it at that moment - he was just on a for a bit of strum with his new pals.

I have to admit it made me think. There I was, stood at the back, with my weedy disapproval totally swallowed up by the general cheering around me.

'Where did that get you?' I thought' 'What was your point, exactly?' I asked myself. For as much as I do not enjoy what he does musically I did feel a bit of a churlish little twat afterwards.

Ian Brown at Old Trafford

After half an hour of incoherent and out of tune ramblings his guitarist played the first 30 seconds of Fools Gold. Hopes were then cruelly dashed as it segued into more of the bland "funky" drivel served up for the last 30 minutes.

Also saw an audience member heckled at a Paul Weller gig at MEN Arena. She stood up to dance to Eton Rifles and the miserable git sat behind her told her to sit down cos he couldn't see. That miserable git was ex-Piccadilly DJ and Salford Jet Mike Sweeney. Surely the grumpiest behaviour ever at a concert?

Not me booing...

.. but I was at Elvis Costello's UEA gig in 2005, the night Liverpool FC won the Champions League after being 3-0 down.

I've seen Elvis many times but I've never seen him quite as angry, and this show was a belter!

Not me, but

A girl I went to see Gilbert O'Sullivan with stormed out when he sang A Woman's Place Is In The Home. She was livid and made it known.

He didn't notice.

If you only just wouldn't clap so hard

I've never indulged personally, but I witnessed plenty of booing at the Gaumont cinema, Sheffield in May 1966 when Bob Dylan and the Hawks received decidedly short shrift from the stuffy old folkies.

I could never fathom it, myself.

I'm ashamed to admit

booing what appeared to me to be a poncey yank band doing bad Velvet Underground covers at Night Moves in Glasgow in 1984. The band was called REM. I've no idea what happened to them.

I was there, too

They started with a ragged "Pale Blue Eyes" and were not that great. I didn't boo - I wasn't that moved. But at that point (summer 84?) seeing bands play bad Velvets covers was old hat in Glasgow.

A friend who was at the gig thought it was the greatest thing he had ever seen.

Nightmoves

it would seem is thee place for bad behavior, I threw a crushed up empty can of Schlitz at The Proclaimers. It was in my Gothic days and they were decidedly not what I went to Nightmoves for.

No, but ...

I was at the Cat Steven's gig in Dublin at which he was booed by a substantial section of the audience. It was an experience I would rather not repeat. http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/my-night-with-cat-stevens-0

If I really didn't like what was happening on the stage I would leave - see Stephen Stills' solo gig in Dublin a few years ago. Appalling. But clearly some of the audience loved it, and who am I to foist my resentment upon their private enjoyment. Instead I blogged on here about how bad it was. Much more satisfying surely, than a quick boo.

I booed and heckled Starsailor

when they supported the Police. I loathe the mewling vocals and sub-Jeff Buckley arrangements. Everyone else seemed quite tolerant, but I didn't care. It didn't matter to anyone else what I felt, and for me, it was a chance to vent at a band that was foisted on me and one that I wouldn't cross the street to piss on if they were on fire.I did only boo when they'd finished their songs. I am not a philistine.
Why not get up and leave? Where else is there to go in a bloody arena?

The Jesus and Mary Chain

Liverpool Uni in 1985 (I think) - they were good, really - I just got caught up in the whole riot thing - apparently it was Pete Wylie who started it.

Also the Tom Robinson Band in the late 70s at St Georges Hall, Bradford - a long day's shelf stacking at Morrisons, roasting hot venue, stuck behind a guy in a very smelly leather jacket, and they were so dull - every new song they played was deathly. They totally deserved it. Grrr.

Sleeper at the Leadmill

Eff off, you've ruined my birthday. 15 years on, I still think they've pretty much soured music for me.

David McAlmont was pretty funny at the Leadmill. He told the crowd to pay attention and be quiet as he was using this gig to warm up for some important ones in London. I think someone would have booed if anyone was really that interested.

How the heck did I miss REM playing at Nightmares? Mind you, I stayed in Lauders the night the Stone Roses played there, so doesn't surprise me.

Sleeper..

I saw them in Southampton, supported by Longpigs, who I'd gone to see and who were excellent. I thought I'd stay on to have a quick letch at Louise and see what they were like live; after all, I liked the singles.

Cor blimey trousers. Ms Wener is a right saucepot but would struggle vocally even if supplied with a large bucket marked "TUNES". I lasted three numbers but felt that booing would have been unsporting. And might have damaged my chances if I had bumped into Louise later or anything. As it happened, I didn't. But my logic still holds water in my book.
