Have OK Go jumped the shark?

roryks's picture

In a determined effort to out-do themselves, have OK Go gone overboard?

4

The OK Go Ratio.

The more elaborate and expensive the video, the less tuneful and expansive the song.

Surely

They have got to literally jump a shark in one of their videos.
I love their videos, couldnt hum a note of their songs. But who cares?

Indeed

In the internet age, there is clearly rooom for a band who specialise in making videos, and if they can make a living from it, fair play to 'em!

My tupp'ence worth

1) It's extraordinarily clever,
2) It's extraordinarily expensive (past videos have credited a sponsor, I can only imagine the car manufacturer stumped up for this),
3) They still can't sell a record (in the old-fashioned sense)...
4) ... but from what I've read they make as decent living out of the YouTube advertising revenue from these videos.

All power to them, looking forward to the next one...

slight deviation

- how does that YouTube advertising revenue thing work?

In short...

... you join their "partnership programme" and get a share of the revenues YT get from those pop-ups and other ads whenever anyone watches your video. They vet your material (it has to be original, for instance), and though the payment per view is tiny, for some of these videos that get millions of views (and/or those constantly uploading content), there are thousands of pounds to be made (bear in mind YT is the 2nd most visited site on the internet.) That said, the maths indicates we're talking tens, rather than hundreds of thousands of pounds, but hardly chump change...

Free money if you go viral

I was reading in the Sunday papers a few weeks ago how the 'Charlie Bit My Finger' guy made over $100,000!

Saw them at last July 's Jodrell Bank gig

They were utter rubbish.

Like the video though.
