Hats off to Mossman...

Patrick Crowther's picture

She wrote this of Jeff Beck:

'He taps his strings so delicately with a bottle-neck, the notes emerge like a stream of tiny comets bursting into life a thousand miles away.'

That is beautiful. I just wanted to say so.

Whereas

Neil McCormick had this to say of Jimmy Page:

"Page is amongst the most lyrically virtuoso players of his rock generation..."

Which is utter drivel.

Wasn't it actually...

"the white-haired Page", no less?

Indeed it was...

...and he was "effusively enthusiastic" about Mr Edge.

Jack White, moreover, should henceforth be referred to as the "plucky primitivist", who is "ready to squeeze sound out of any piece of wood with strings".

The whole thing can be found here for those wishing to find out just how far rock journalism has progressed since the bad old days of Charlie Murray, Kent, Parsons etc.

The intro is priceless

"After U2’s shows at Wembley last Saturday, I found myself in a huddle with The Edge, Jimmy Page and Noel Gallagher."

The rest of the sentence, "before security guards swiftly ejected me from the venue" must have been edited out.

Either that or he's a tool.

The full horror

of this will go some way to answering your question...

Textbook McCormick..

...a huge clang of names being dropped, with passing reference to the fact that he can 'sing/play etc a bit' as well, all bundled together into an article based on a ridiculous premise.

This is complete cobblers as well:

'It is easy to overlook how much of his breakthrough style was based around a specially constructed board of effects pedals'

Utter rubbish. Virtually all his most famous moments in The Yardbirds and early Zeppelin are done with a minimum of effects, pretty much just an overdrive, wah-pedal and echo box. The pedal board linked in the article is dated from 1993..

Agreed

And apologies for hijacking your thread, Patrick!

Blame Forde. It's his fault, really....
