Has Bowie quietly retired?

Mr Fade's picture

It seems like ages since he brought anything new out, and he seems to have bypassed the recent 'play-some-old' money-spinning tours everyone else has gone on, or even 'hear diamond dogs in sequence at the Royal Albert Hall for a grand or whatever.
Maybe he's the only dignified pop star there's been?

Oh no, don't say it's true

Someone made a good point recently that Bowie has done the smartest thing imaginable in this age of ubiquitous, devalued, Twittering celebrity - he's completely withdrawn from the media realm. Whether this preserves his hard-earned mystique or exiles him from a younger generation is worth debating.

Could be

Well I saw Bowie in 1990 on the Sound & Vision 'Hear the old songs for the very last time' tour so perhaps he did the 'play some old' money spinning tour long before anyone else got around to it. And, needless to say, he's played all those songs many times since then..

As for retiring, well perhaps. How old is he now? Early 60s? It wouldn't surprise me. It has been a very long time, hasn't it?

The grist of the rumour mill is......

That he's not been a very well man....

This is all I could find...

Looks like a 40th anniversary version of Space Oddity is coming out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie
This is pretty informative about activity since ill health in 2004.

Who can blame the man for slowing down?

0
Adman | 23 August 2009 - 10:06am

Certainly better than nowt

Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud - the wonderful b-side to Space Oddity - was the track that convinced me he was never going to be a one-hit wonder. So much so I bought the follow-up, The Prettiest Star, for a princely 10p. Featuring Marc Bolan on guitar it is one of my treasured vinyl possessions and worth considerably more than 10p now.

I hope not

the world would be a poorer place without him. Its funny, but you realise what an immense talent he is, when you realise that he may hang up his coat.

But I guess, with the news that he hasn't been to well, you can't blame the guy

the new cd he compiled

for the d**** m*** is brilliant
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISELECT

i saw it at my parents' house.

0
sandamiano | 23 August 2009 - 5:12pm

I really hope he hasn't retired

I've seen everyone i want to see live except David Bowie. I'd love to see him do his stuff on-stage.

The only time I've ever seen Bowie onstage...

was when he gave his legendary performance of religion classic The Lord's Prayer at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. I feel privileged to have been there.

Seeing As Its Sunday...

Nicodemus | 23 August 2009 - 8:50pm

I love the voice from the crowd that shouts "Wooo!"...

as he begins. Obviously a fan of that slow-paced toe tapper.

0
Patrick Crowther | 24 August 2009 - 8:47am

Was this when he did a duet of Under Pressure

with a deranged Annie Lennox? Bowie's body language was screaming "get off me woman" as Annie went to that special place in her head.

Jed Clampett | 25 August 2009 - 12:47pm

Really?

I seem to recall that popular opinion at the time was that it was a bit crass.

0
Uncle Wheaty | 23 August 2009 - 9:09pm

Crass it was, Uncle...

and that was precisely why it was so perfect for a Freddie Mercury tribute concert.

0
Patrick Crowther | 24 August 2009 - 8:48am

Your a bad man Patrick!

I think Mick Ronson wanted the stage to open up!

0
Iainso | 23 August 2009 - 9:54pm

I wish I had access to decent pctures

The Thin White Duke has gone right downhill since he had his teeth done.

Please look at some before and afters available on the Web. Someone appears to have stuffed a Steinway in his mouth.

Each to his own and that..

Bandslam

Bowie makes a cameo appearence in the new film Bandslam.

Certainly going for a younger audience ....

0
chrisodonoghue | 23 August 2009 - 10:03pm

in nick pegg's book

'the complete david bowie' he posits the notion that no-one was more surprised by the 'lord's prayer' incident than bowie himself. looking again, that moment at 5.42 seems to confirm this!

0
sandamiano | 23 August 2009 - 10:49pm

It was nowhere near as

embarrassing at that awful honking he did on the sax during 'Dudes'a bit earlier. Its sounded like he was tuning a Bobcat (or Bob Dylan).

Was in the crowd and remember looking at my mates and going 'what the fuck was that?'. The place as you can hear just went silent apart from some people praying along with him. Certainly up there in my 'odd gig moments' list

David Bowie and Recent Activity

I can tell you that I do not think David Bowie is retiring. You can follow him and be involved with his news here.
http://www.davidbowie.com/

He also recently released 'Space Oddity' on an iPhone app with iKlax and here is more information on that:
http://www.iklaxmusic.com/davidbowie/

Also he plans to re-release the album 'Station to Station'
http://pitchfork.com/news/36213-david-bowies-ispace-oddityi-istation-to-...

So he is rather busy!

Bugger that

I want another version of Ziggy Stardust! Forgotten how many versions I have now, CDs & vinyl. The first time I saw him live, at the Free Trade Hall, was just before it's release - I'm that old. Whatever happened to the fillum version of Ziggy he was going to do?

0
Beany | 24 August 2009 - 11:06am

Ah the Nassau

gig finally out in its entirety. Lovely. I heart Station To Station v much indeed.

Yes he's 'doing some old' but so does Elvis P - when's he doing some new?

0
DogFacedBoy | 24 August 2009 - 11:41am

Cracked Actor on DVD please!

that's what i'll have.

0
sandamiano | 24 August 2009 - 3:10pm

retirement

he can supervise those rereleases from his Central Park apartment - that doesn't count as "working"...

It has been INCREDIBLY quiet from bowie for the last 18 months - prior to that he did at least pop up on Bowienet occasionally and did the odd guest slot at concerts, etc.

the rumours are:
1) yes, he's been really quite unwell
2) he's lost patience with "the business" and is fed up with the intrusions into his personal life

Years ago, when he "vanished" completely, it meant that he was cultivating a new album/tour/image - but i fear those days are gone - and that is from someone who would LOVE him to return.

We shall see.

Would love a quiet, acoustic album of thoughtful gritty music - his (relatively) recent rework of Conversation Piece sets an example of the kind of thing he could do that would be magnificent.

We're not going to see any more big world tours. That's almost certain...

Bowienet is a pretty desperate place these days!

Rick Rubin

Has anyone given him Rick Rubin's phone number yet?

songwriting

is clearly an art rather than a science

0
Sheev | 25 August 2009 - 7:25pm

Well, with a 9 year old around the house...

...perhaps he prefers to "spend some time with the family" - from the pictures on Wikipedia, Iman still looks rather splendid at 54, so who can blame him?

0
nicktf | 25 August 2009 - 7:24pm

I find it...

A little depressing and a little distressing to think of Bowie as Old & Ill.When I saw him on 'Extras' I was shocked at his overall demeanour.

Long Live The Thin White Duke.
