Happy St. Patrick's Day

Gramsci's picture

A Happy St. Patricks's Day to all the Massive.

Given the day that's in it a top 5 Irish Rock/Pop songs thingy might be in order. (I'm excluding folk just because I couldn't short list).

In no particular order

* Downmarket - The Blades

* The Boys are back in Town - Thin Lizzy

* Rainy Night in Soho - The Pogues

* A Day Without Me - U2

* After All - The Frank & Walters

I know I've left out loads (sorry Van) but I hope that sets the ball rolling.

Sorry about that Fraser - any chance you could delete the others.

The Blades

the only serious competition that Downmarket faces as greatest Irish single is from these two

Suil agam go raibh La le Padraig brea ag gach duine.

No Irish folk?

The Blades

I love that song. In this (english) side of the UK they're not that known. But having been a Mod during the 80s I was very aware of them. Surely one of the best of the songwritery/new wave sort of bands from that era. Definitely due some sort of wider recognition. Anybody that rates Weller, Costello, Squeeze, The Undertones and stuff of that ilk should go and investigate now!

Hold Up

Simon, the Republic of Ireland is not a "side of the UK". Good man.

I know!

I was thinking in my head about The Blades making some inroads over here in other parts of the UK. I saw them tour back in the 80s, one of the best gigs I saw them do was in Glasgow, very packed. Whereas in London they didn't really play to packed houses.

I think...

that before U2 came along they were in terms of chart success Ireland's most successful musical export. But I suppose, still the reaction is WTF!!

All this is too sophisticated

by half. Where would any comprehensive overview of Irish pop music be without this stonewall classic?
