Happy Canada Day!
Posted by Chris G on 1 July 2010 - 11:01pm.
Probably the most belittled country culturally speaking (mainly by you know who) after probably Belgium! But we all know better than that and that all the best Americans are really Canadians in disguise. here's some of my favourites can anyone think of any others?

Rush
Geddy Lee seems to have an unusual amp setup in this one.
I think they may be
Washburn amps.
As usual, the answer is...
...Joni.
Not only Joni's greatest song..
..but possibly one of the greatest songs ever written.
Blooming Joni???? Pah!
As usual the answer is The Tragically Hip!
Blooming Tragically Hip?...
Tragically Pedestrian more like it.
Bryan Adams Run to You after its been to an R.E.M. concert.
Typically Radge...
...here's Ron
More Ron
My wife appears in this video (briefly) ...
The McGarrigles
I remember seeing them live at the Dominion, Tottenham Court Road, it must have been about 1982. This was the first song of theirs that I fell in love with, and to.
Besnard Lakes etc
Was going to post a youtube link to the song "Disaster" by this excellent Canadian band but seem to have forgotten how to do the embedding thingy - anyone care to refesh my depleted memory?
Some other great Canadians:
Robertson Davies - masterful Canadian novelist - criminally overlooked these days
The Bard of Montreal (of course)
David Cronenberg, scary filmaker
Not forgetting Neil...
Having watched the entire CSNY Wembley 74 concert on DVD, this song gets by far the biggest cheer of the day. And what a line-up of backing singers; Crosby, Nash and Mitchell!
Happy Canada Day from Toronto !
The Spoons and Glass Tiger have just rocked Woodbine Park ...
i thought we all agreed it was
nickelback !
At this late stage
I don't think we'd be fooling anyone, Junior.
We could always try some Tom Cochrane
stars
the acorn
unfortunate proximity of July 1 to July 4
I was once on a Canadian train on July 4, having enjoyed Canada day three days earlier in Vancouver. An announcement came over the tannoy: 'It's a special day today, so can we please all give a cheer-'
At which point three charming Texan ladies began a celebratory chanting of 'USA!USA!'
'- to (name deleted due to my lack of total recall) in carriage 3 who is 75 today!'
The Texan trio sat down, slightly embarrassed.
[Please note that this is not a call-out to the recent thread on Americans with taste. I am something of an Americanophile, if such a word exists, with the highest possible regard for the cultural contributions and general awesomeness of the USA).
And my favourite Canadian, you ask? Why, Leslie Nielsen, of course.
There are loads of great Canadians
off the top of my head...
Cowboy Junkies
Arcade Fire
Mary Margaret O'Hara
kd lang
The Band
not to forget Laughing Len, Neil & Joni
Mmmm mmm mmmm
Black Mountain
Looking forward to seeing this lot at Latitude;
Thank You Canada!
You're all wrong
It's this:
Let's Rock!
and now ... for the laydees
Bruce Cockburn...
...he looks a bit like Adam Clayton.
As an Australian I have to say that
I am surprised and more than a little hurt that Canada is regarded as being "belittled" more than my homeland. I mean come on!
I am going to go out on a limb....
...and say that, just for 50% of his "Reckless" album, Bryan Adams - YES! Bryan Adams - did his homeland proud. The utter toss which makes up absolutely everything else the man's ever done musically is more than made up for by:
(EXECRABLE video effort here. I maintain that if the production was a bit more natural, this song would get the plaudits it deserves as a great rock/pop song.)
Well, I do have a soft spot for this
It rocks
Prince Philip enjoying some Canadian folklore
Kathleen Edwards
Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra La La Band...
...With Choir
Tasty post rock treats.
Also include Godspeed You! Black Emperor as well.
Almost all my favourite Canadians
have already been posted, but there is still Jim Bryson with his great song Somewhere Else
Ver 'Nakes
Young Fresh Fellows
Can't find a clip of the masterful 'When The Girls Get Here' but here's their second-best song 'Amy Grant'
My Current favourite Canadians
What about
Neko Case
New Pornographers
Rufus
Broken Social Scene
Aren't they all Canadian? Seen them all live recently too.
