Happy Birthday

Twangothan's picture

Occupying boring conference call by some gentle browsing, came across this site where you can find out what was number 1 that day you were born.

http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/Number-One-Songs-90s.html

I got "Don't (I Beg of You)" - Elvis Presley - could be worse.

Harrumph

Apparently on the day I breathed my first, the number one slot was occupied by "Testing, Testing, Testing, 1,2,3" by one Mr. Edison.

"Hernando's Hideaway"

Apparently during the month I breathed my first, the number one slot was occupied by the Johnston Brothers, but at some point during the same month "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley & The Comets was a re-entry, back at the top with a bullet.

I'm alright with

I'm A Believer by The Monkees.

I wish I didn't know

No rock 'n' roll here, Brer Fox. I got sodding 'Hoop de hoop' by Perry Como and the Fontane Sisters. Wikipedia says he was nicknamed Mr C so maybe there's something dark and rock 'n' rollish I can investigate there. The Fontane Sisters were named Bea, Geri and Margi Rosse - sounds like the Golden Girls!

Too young !!!!

Too Young-Nat King Cole. Not anymore!!!

0
Bingham | 24 April 2008 - 6:30pm

Didn't we do this one already?

Anyway...

'Come Softly To Me' by The Fleetwoods.

That makes me feel very old indeed.

Mitigation

Did we? I had a vague feeling that we had. But I was brain dead on a trans Atlantic conference call so an original thought was pretty unlikely. Still fun though!

Twangothan | 25 April 2008 - 10:26am

I'm afraid so.

We covered this in the cleverly named What was Number 1 when you were born? thread, back in January. No harm in revisiting it though...

Relief

Hastily checking, at least I didn't post to the other one as well. I wonder why not? Maybe I was actually doing some work that day?

Tammy

Unfortunately, not George Jones's late ex but some song of that name by David Cassidy's mum. And there was me all this time thinking it was Elvis's Teddy Bear (I was two weeks late for that, it turns out.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 24 April 2008 - 7:05pm

You have confused me, Archie

I thought "Tammy" was by Debbie Reynolds, whose connection with David Cassidy eludes me.

Mr Cassidy's real mum was called Evelyn Ward, and his screen mum was Shirley Jones.

I remain puzzled!

Vulpes Vulpes | 25 April 2008 - 12:38pm

Synaptic meltdown

I meant Carrie Fisher. I typed David Cassidy.

No, me neither.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 25 April 2008 - 12:43pm

Far too much knowledge of the Cassidy family tree...

...for a mature gentleman to admit to, VV.

Paul Waring | 25 April 2008 - 1:44pm

How can I

be sure?

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 25 April 2008 - 1:54pm

The Everly Brothers

Cathy's Clown.

Mrs I has "I Think I Love You" by The Partridge Family. I quite like that one, actually.

Pedant alert

Don't and I Beg Of You are two separate songs; although Don't (I Beg Of You) sounds like a good one.

Lucas Hare | 24 April 2008 - 8:54pm

Arrrrgh

Busted. I didn't realise! I was working on the Pelvis in '58 must be OK!

0
Twangothan | 25 April 2008 - 10:24am

Drat, labouring under a misaprehension

for years, I thought it was Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" and now I find out that it's actually Bobbie Gentry's "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" which is equally great but just a tad less rockin'
Still, my son's chart topper is "Umbrella" by Rhianna. Lucky boy!

Pedant #2

That's a link to the US Billboard chart archive above. UK number ones can be found at http://www.theofficialcharts.com/all_the_no1_songs.php
(Although I'm glad to know that the Temptations were at number one in the US charts with "Can't Get Next To You" when I emerged)

0
Pete Kavanagh | 24 April 2008 - 9:50pm

Makes no odds to me

I only get to swap Paul Anka for Debbie Reynolds. Still no Elvis boo chiz.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 24 April 2008 - 11:10pm

Done this one before...

what about everyone finding out what was No.1 nine months before they were born?

0
Patrick Crowther | 25 April 2008 - 6:19am

Ooh, yes, much better

I'm happier with being conceived to the strains of Guy Mitchell's "Singing the Blues".

0
Archie Valparaiso | 25 April 2008 - 8:17am

Way Hey

Rosemary Clooney - "Mambo Italiano"! That's more like it.

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 25 April 2008 - 12:41pm

I get

Donna Summer and Hot Stuff from the US - I was a disco baby. But from the UK I get Ring My Bell from someone called Anita Ward.

Any of you, ahem, older folks recall such a person?

0
Niks | 25 April 2008 - 9:26am

Yes, but. . .

there was another version of "Ring My Bell" by someone dressed rather skimpily with a glass-bead curtain on her head. The name'll come to me in a minute.

(Goes for a porcelain pontification.)

Got it - Amii Stewart! (No relation to Dave, Andy or Jackie.)

Archie Valparaiso | 25 April 2008 - 9:35am

I'm A Believer

Add another one for "I'm A Believer" by the Monkees. I also seem to recall from a similar site that it was No 1 in the UK too....

0
chrisf | 25 April 2008 - 10:06am

Not a good week

"Sheila" by Tommy Roe was #1 in the US.
"I Remember You" by Frank Ifield was No. 1 in the UK.

0
Mark Gould | 25 April 2008 - 4:52pm

Teenage pregnancy Ode

I was born to the strains of the angst-ridden teenage pregnancy/suicide drama that was Ode to Billie Joe, which must have cheered my Mum up no end.

0
On The Fence | 28 April 2008 - 11:42am

Double Macca Whammy

Those Were The Days by Mary Hopkin was the top disc when I was born, and my rudimentary mathematics suggests that i was conceived to Hello Goodbye by The Beatles
Alex

0
Alex | 28 April 2008 - 11:54am

hmmm

in the US, it was Roberta Flack's First Time...., which is perfectly acceptable, nay, even credible. In the UK, it was The Scots Dragoon Guards doing Amazing Grace, which is...not.
