Moments of Pleasure

Bloody marvellous...

I could listen to her talk forever. What a wonderful imagination she has... so fertile and open.

Something I found very interesting about that clip was listening to the children cheer as she came on. They say "Hooray!", and there isn't a "Whooo!" anywhere to be heard. It really dates the clip, whereas Kate herself looks almost... timeless.

She is utterly fabulous. I loved her as a kid and I love her now.

Cheers gone by

You're right about the cheers, Patrick - it's very much a straightforward Cheggers Plays Pop / Crackerjack cheer that you don't hear nowadays. Eee, no, they don't cheer like they used to.

"I met Kate Bush once".
"What did she say to you?"
"Nothing. She just took one look at me and put a big dunce's cap on my head".

Nick White | 30 July 2008 - 10:22am

Still..

I would burn down my own house for that woman

Pat Carty | 30 July 2008 - 10:03am

Dame Kate?

If honours are worth anything (and I know that's a big 'if'), Kate should be up for a gong - if she hasn't got one already. I don't use the word genius of many people, in any field, but I'd use it of Kate Bush before just about anyone in the British music scene (apart from Richard Thompson, obviously...).

I had goose pimples watching that little BBC tribute. Nearly 30 years later she produced Aerial, most of which is up there with her very best work. Nocturn is quite, quite perfect. For evidence...

Azeem | 30 July 2008 - 10:09am

I don't think 'Aerial' is up there with her best work...

it is her best work. A fabulous, fabulous record.

Patrick Crowther | 30 July 2008 - 10:45am

Aerial

Yep It is her best and keeps getting better with every listen.

She should record more often and perhaps tour a little?? I know fat chance right??

Bang Em In Bingham | 30 July 2008 - 12:28pm

I agree

I think Aerial is fab. Also with Bertie growing up and less of a toddler Kate may find more time for the studio...cross fingers

Commoner | 30 July 2008 - 1:06pm

I

Would burn down your house for that woman....but be decent enough to make sure people and belongings are removed....and that insurance was paid for....and...

Commoner | 30 July 2008 - 10:09am

Kate v Madonna

Madonna will be 50 in a few weeks. I know who I would rescue from a burning house.

Beany | 30 July 2008 - 10:39am

Tact personified...

Patrick Crowther | 30 July 2008 - 11:01am
Beany | 30 July 2008 - 11:07am

I think I need a lie down...

the 9 year old me was transfixed, and the 39 year old me still reckons this is one of the most striking debuts of any act ever.

Patrick Crowther | 30 July 2008 - 11:10am

Kate on the ABBA Show

Beany | 30 July 2008 - 11:09am

Right, I definitely need a lie down!

Madonna? Nah... a cynical record company executive with Venus Williams' muscles squeezed into a leotard.

Kate Bush... a woman who knows the difference between sex and sensuality... she could be more alluring with one look than Madonna could manage in a quarter century of bumps, grinds and lesbian snogs.

Patrick Crowther | 30 July 2008 - 11:19am

Another excuse to

...look at this picture,

and listen to the best Kate Bush cover ever.

Niks | 30 July 2008 - 11:20am

While I could happily

gaze at the picture for hours (though sadly my typing isn't up to doing so while I post, and to see the comment field I have to scroll down so that most of the young Kate is obscured), your "best cover version" claim calls out for a riposte. How about the Futureheads' Hounds Of Love? Or even the Ukulele Orchestra's Wuthering Heights? All a matter of opinion, I know, but both on You Tube, and both worth checking out. (If I weren't reeling from a trip to the beach yesterday with the grand-daughter, and apparently going down with a cold too, I'd send you there more efficiently, but my brain hurts, and I can barely remember how to type..... )(As evidenced by the fact that I typed 'can barely remember how to type' with the caps lock on, and the shouting made my head throb.)

nigelthebald | 31 July 2008 - 7:42am

Riposte

That's not even as good as Pat Benatar's much earlier version of T'Heights. Even better is the cover of The Man With The Child In His Eyes by Hue & Cry. Honest.

Beany | 31 July 2008 - 7:55am

Well, I tried....

I found the Benatar version.... and thought it was a bit pointless in its similarity to the original. Though as I said, it's all a matter of opinion. And - confession time - I didn't listen right through to the end (Anyone would think I was a teenager. Until they met me.), so maybe Ms B had some surprise lurking there that I missed... Sadly, I couldn't locate the Hue & Cry one on You Tube. Where else might I find it without further compromising a very low income already reeling from the rapidly rising cost of living and from a barely controllable guitar buying habit?
