Half Man Half Biscuit - where do I start?

I've always meant to get around to giving Half Man Half Biscuit a go, and after the Trumpton Riots came up on my iPod this morning, I think the time may be now.

Does anyone know where to start?

You can't really go too far wrong

with any of them. If you like Trumpton Riots, the chances are that you will probably like the classic Back in The DHSS, which was the first. Some of it sounds a bit raw now though(although everything by HMHB sounds a bit raw).

They tend to play a track or two of all the albums when they play live. I really like Trouble Over Bridgewater and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Road. Not quite so keen on Some Call It Godcore and Achtung Bono, but they've all got their moments. The website http://cobweb.businesscollaborator.com/hmhb/ is quite a good starting place.

A curmudgeon writes......

Don't bother. The enjoyment of reading the titles of the songs will be diminished by the ensuing performances of same.

I'd actually say their more

I'd actually say their more recent stuff - although it depends on how old you are, really. For me (late twenties) a lot of the early stuff is impenetrable because the references were obscure at the time and are even moreso now, whereas Achtung Bono has the likes of "Shit Arm, Bad Tattoo" which is very funny once you realise it's about the Libertines etc...

The more recent stuff is best

If you want to try one CD I would suggest Cammell Laird Social Club which is my favourite of theirs. After that Trouble Over Bridgewater and Achtung Bono are pretty good. And there are rumours of a new release any time now.

David Cameron | 17 March 2008 - 2:08pm

Not THE David Cameron? If only.

I agree, Cammell Laird is the one to start with. It's more "song-based".

Andrew Harrison | 17 March 2008 - 4:15pm

I am indeed

THE David Cameron.

Paintballs Coming Home

I'm no HMHB expert, but I do like this one:

Dr.Robert | 17 March 2008 - 7:33pm

Being 75% Czech

i always loved "All i want for xmas is a Dukla Prague away Kit".
Which was Red shirt,Yellow shorts by the way.
Impossible to get now of course as the team doesn't exist as such.It was merged with two other teams and are now called FK Marila Příbram. But a new Dukla bought the rights to another club and are back in the Second division ,currently 4th from bottom.as are Marila Příbram, who as we speak are 4th.Weird
Pavel Nedved played for Dukla.
Czech Footy this is more like it,I know F*** all about Folk Rock.

paul beard | 17 March 2008 - 10:01pm

Weird Pavel Nedved

is he Weird Al Yankovic's cousin or something?

Vulpes Vulpes | 18 March 2008 - 2:35pm

Trouble Over Bridgwater

... is definitely the place to start. Camel Laird Social Club and Achtung Bono are very good too. The old DHSS era is still OK but its a bit dated now, and the newer LPs are more musically varied.
A lot of the best songs have come out on EPs. If they ever afford themselves a backwards glance then maybe they'd put them out as a collection.

If you're looking for individual tracks, I'd go for:
24 Hour Garage People
With Goth On Our Side
It's Cliched To Be Cynical At Christmas
Them's The Vagaries
Paintball's Coming Home
For What Is Chatteris
Joy Division Oven Gloves
We Built This Village On A Trad Arr. Tune
You're Hard
Running Order Squabble Fest
It makes The Room Look Bigger
Tending The Wrong Grave For 23 Years
Worried Man Blues
New York Skiffle

If you like football, then you certainly should have:
Mathematically Safe
Bob Wilson Anchor Man
The Referee's Alphabet

(I don't know whether these are actually available on iTunes)

Now I'm off to make this list into a best-of CD for my Easter drive...

Cheers for all your help

24 Hour Garage People and Paintball's Coming Home have gone onto constant loop in the office - can't wait for payday...

Chimney Singing Crow | 18 March 2008 - 1:03pm

Don't overlook the "alt version" of Paintball either Chim

Henman Hill. Box-a-cise. Websites for pets. New Covent Garden soup. None of it escapes the Halfies' withering scorn.

Nor indeed do Slipknot. (Nice harmonies too)

Check out

Check out http://www.hmhb.co.uk click on "audio" and you will find some excellent live stuff and radio sessions to download. It's all done with the bands blessing if you're worried about that kind of thing. It also has a list of all the strange references in their songs.
