The Guardians ''1000 Albums To Hear Before You Die''

lets_be_titan_too's picture

A multi-faceted network of 1970s ‘Brown Psychedelia'' and the Jilted Generations rampageous kineticism, to The Beatles fronted 60s and the Ecstasy eulogising 80s. An alphabetical trawl through the recorded efforts of The Adverts, A-ha, Erykah Badu, Count Basie, Bjork, Ce'Cile, Gil Evans, Four Tops, Fela Kuti, Public Enemy, Prince Buster and Rush to name but a tiny proportion of the splendid and splendorous. It could only be the ultimate chronicle of archived albums and current pressings that is The Guardians '1000 Albums To Hear Before You Die'.

Agree? Disagree? Need a wee? Well have your slash than come back to this, because I'm sure its going to incite some debate.

P.s. For a decade of supposed duds, theres an awful lot of 21st Century output.

It's another list

Who needs it?

Yeah, but at a glance it's

Yeah, but at a glance it's quite superior to the any other 'Greatest Albums'' Compilation, with many unturned stones and unchartered gems who were previously peeping through the moss being given a platform.

I've already compiled a shopping list of 10 albums using this as a resource.

I'm enjoying the feature.

I'm enjoying the feature. It's more a collection of suggestions and personal recommendations, isn't it, rather than a definitive, set in stone thing. Something to dip into. Some nice up-to-the-minute choices and the inclusion of soundtracks and compilations adds to the interest. And it's quite liberating seeing Beatles, Stones and Led Zep entries tossed away in a couple of lines.

I'd rather boil my head in oil

I think I'd rather boil my head in oil than wade through a list of 1,000 albums ... especially from the bloody Guardian

Decade breakdown

You have to admire the shear tenacity of producing this 1001 list. Here are the numbers by decade, a strong showing for the 00s.

50s 17
60s 114
70s 213
80s 178
90s 239
00s 237

All counted by hand obviously (and I'm not sure why it adds up to 998!).

Really?

Are the great albums of all time really that skewed towards the 90s and 00s? It's that kind of bias towards recent material that undermines lists like this for me. That, and I haven't the patience to sift through a list that long.

But how many?

I've enjoyed the list for being different to the usual 'best'. Each day I've counted how many I've actually heard, trying to be clear that only the specific album counts, not a similar one (eg my best of Toots and the Maytals isn't the one mentioned). Haven't bothered recounting but I reckon I've heard 118 of them. Don't how to interpret this score though! Any other sad counters out there?

I'll own up...

According to my calculations at the moment I own 141 of these albums on mp3.

I have owned at some time in the past a total of 203.

Not sure how to this componds my saddness, but I have cut and pasted a spreadsheet of the list if anyones interested :)

I am that sad....

...I also need to know how many of these albums I have - a copy of your spreadsheet would be most welcome if the site technology can deal with it...?

Oh dear....

277 - being very strict on compilations as well.

My first thought...

...was: who needs another bloody list of great albums? My second thought was: how many do I own? 207, not including similar titles.

1000 Album Ready Reckoner

You can get hold of the 1000 list in CSV format here.

Now there's no excuse to post your results, how many have you got?

btw there are only 999 on in the file, not sure who's at fault. If you find the missing 1 let me know...

Paul Thompson | 23 November 2007 - 12:21am

I count 117

that I own, which is strangely disappointing somehow.

I own a paltry 54. Does that

I own a paltry 54.
Does that mean I'm extradited from the club?

Or does that mean I have a slither of a life outside my CD collection?

What absolute tosh

Whether you own them, like them, whatever, another list is really not necessary.

Guardian list

Somewhat irritating in its frequent inclusion of "20 Golden Greats by ...", when they're not really albums in the sense that the artist put them out specifically as a set of songs that belonged together for some reason, but fun to read none the less.

Nice to see some personal favourites finally elevated to list inclusion level. 666 is a fantastic listen, for example.

Oh, and my total, being really strict, is 319.

Inclusion of "Best Ofs"

On the face of it I would normally agree that including compilations is a bit odd but there's at least one inclusion where the best of is certainly the definitive album - Singles -Going Steady by The Buzzcocks. The title says it all - they were/are a singles band and if you only hear one Buzzcocks album it should be this one and there's a consistency about it as well. I'm sure there are others that fall into the same category on the list.
