Elmo

doing the backing vocals is fucking genius.

My other favourite Sesame Street is this

Norah Jones, Elmo and "Y"

Johnny Cash & Oscar the Grouch

and Elmo and Ricky Gervais

"Feel like shouting Yahoooo!"

Fantastic.

As an aside, I'm slightly surprised at the level of American recognition EC now has. Seriously high profile guests on his Spectacle show.

I was under the impression that, along with contemporaries like The Jam, he didn't make much of an impact in the States in his heyday. Is that not the case?

Not the case

In a nutshell: EC struck big in the USA in the late seventies in a way that Weller et al never did. However after two years of graft and with an album finally in the top ten, he blew it. If you don't know the story, google EC and Stephen Stills.

Over the years he has wisely cultivated his American profile, turning Everyday I Write The Book and Veronica into hits but also by constantly being available. If his cultural currency actually matched his record and ticket sales, he'd be a billionaire.

Interesting insight, thanks.

I genuinely wasn't aware that he'd had significant US success.

He's clearly a pretty savvy operator and has maximised his profile over there, as you say. I suppose it helps that, like The Clash and The Police but unlike Weller, he always sang in an American style, and nothing wrong with that.

He's clearly lightened up from the time of that excruciatingly self-conscious, chippy TV-AM interview he did with Anne Diamond in the (to be fair) dim and distant past.

Seek out the El Mocambo LP

from the late 70s. Fantastic full-on performance by the Attractions.
