Grown up songs for kids
Posted by malcolm.buckley on 13 March 2009 - 9:03pm.
I really enjoyed the playlist of grownup songs for kids in the latest edition- and think this could form the start of a great resource for parents. So worth a post?
But first I should promote the Tweenie-avoiding approach taken by some friends of mine- it has to be executed while your kids are below 3, mind:
"the car can only play grown-up music, yours won't work"
Assuming you are too late for this tactic, here are my other suggestions not covered by James Medd's article:
The Lion Sleeps Tonight- Tight Fit
Trouble- Shampoo
La Bamba- Ritchie Valens/ whoever
Nellie the Elephant - Toy Dolls (not sure which side of the line this falls)
Any more?

"Nellie The Elephant"
Can't remember the name of the woman who did the original but it's one of the greatest records ever made.
That would be
Mandy Miller, who I believe also did the original of I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas, which is far superior to the cover by Terry Hall & Lenny The Lion
Eddi Reader
My daughters (now 10 & 7) have loved "Eddi Reader Sings The Songs Of Robert Burns" for 5 years or more - it's the only CD that's been in the car all that time. A great relaxer for them, and easier on my tired old ears than "Pop Jr" all the time.
Lemon Jelly
The first two albums are perfect and brilliant for the adults too. Try 'Nice Weather for Ducks' for size.

Lots of good suggestions.
And have a look at the Spotify List too

Saint Etienne
They did some songs specifically to be 'good' music for kids, which are in the word thread above, under the Treehouse cd, but lots of their songs I would say are perfect.
When I was a kid I adored the Beach Boys, and things like Yellow Submarine. We also had a lot of musicals around, a lot of that is pretty damn good music and singalong. Our faves there were Westside Story and the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang soundtrack. My niece loves Mary Poppins.
That lot would work for me. I've my first on the way, so this kind of stuff is starting to become important.
Vampire Weekend
is good for kids - but watch out for the sweary bits.
Fuzzy Felt Folk
Worth checking out - it's on Spotify - a great compilation of tunes that sound like late 60s early 70s kids tv meets the Wicker Man. And one of my all time favourite recordings, the demo of Basil Kirchin's I Start Counting which is absolutely gorgeous.
Toots
Our near-three-year-old absolutely loves Monkey Man by Toots & The Maytals, which in our house now has its own monkey dance, accompanied by endless `ay-yah-yah's. Brilliant.
Tot and Toddler Approved
Once upon a time my wife ran a daycare from our home. The top two -- actually the only two -- songs demanded by the pack of ravening young 'uns were:
Party Next Door (12” mix) – Black Uhuru
and
Birdhouse in Your Soul – They Might Be Giants
They would, en masse, sing along at the top of their wee lungs, and after the songs came to an end, would chant "Again, again!" as if they were Teletubbies.
How about kids songs that
How about kids songs that grown ups can enjoy,(well I like it anyway.)
