Great sport calls

Cookieboy's picture

Just wanted to draw attention to a moment that may have passed you by.

During Game 6 of the recently completed Baseball World Series the commentators were talking about previous Game 6's and one they mentioned was from 1991 which ended with a great call by late broadcaster Jack Buck who with one sentence was able to set up the next day's Game 7.

Twenty years later almost to the day Jack's son Joe was calling the game and thanks to a fellow named David Freese he was given reason to knowingly quote his dad verbatim at the games conclusion.

The fact it happened in the Buck families hometown of St Louis at a stadium that has a monument of the father just added to it. I never particularly liked Joe Buck but I loved his dad and I loved this call.

The correct answer is

of course, Cliff Morgan.

I can quote it almost verbatim.
"What a score! Ooooh, that fellow Edwards. if the greatest writer of the written word would have written that story, no-one would have believed it. That really was something."

It was joy at seeing greatness unfolding.

Is there any other sport where there is universal agreement*

about the greatest moment?

(Well, almost universal agreement)

Is there any other sport...

...whose 'greatest moment' happened in a friendly?

"Amateurs"

Who usually couldn't get their shoes on after the game until they took out the roll of fivers stuffed into them.

True but I was referring to the fact they weren't playing

or training full-time and, in the main, had day jobs to go back to on Monday morning.

Looking at that clip again - the try should never have happened

because the ref should have blown for either of the ridiculously high tackles on JPR Williams.
New Zealand were dirty buggers in those days.

I think what you meant to say was

That was an outstanding application of the advantage law by the referee.

i don't think New Zealand were angels. But I'm not sure you'd say that the Lions were. They had the nucleus of the 71 team, and they were not known for taking many steps backwards!

Nice one.

I didn't follow this year's series as I like to. After my Gyros crashed out in predictable if not unspectacular fashion. Good clip.

It was a great series

Game 7 was a bit anti-climactic but nothing could have followed the previous match which even before it ended I thought was one of the best games of baseball I'd ever seen, even though it was sloppily fielded.

I should have mentioned in the original post that Tim McCarver was broadcasting in both games, it's his voice you hear at the beginning of the clip.

I see Game 6 is

ahem, 'available'. I'll have a look.

Baseball.

About eight years ago I used to work late, Channel 5 used to show live baseball to the wee hours, it was a nice way of passing the time. There were two presenters, one English and one American, who were good fun. Once the American, who was being ribbed for being very tired as his wife had just had a child, slipped up when talking and said something along the lines of 'well he looks like he just hadn't had the sex he wants' then corrected himself with 'success'. The other bloke, it's 2 in the morning and live, could not stop laughing and demanded a commercial break.

I love baseball

We're regular visitors to Tropicana Field to see the Rays when we go to Florida. Had the privilege of seeing them score five runs in the bottom of the ninth to pip the Royals 8-7 back in August. They then went on an amazing run, culminating in the astonishing events of the last day of regular season.
Rays 7-0 down to NYY, score 6 in bottom of 8th and a two-out homer in the 9th to tie things up. Boston blow a 9th innings lead to the Orioles and two minutes later, Longoria hits a 12th inning home run to give the Rays the wildcard place. Rays 9 games behind Boston at start of month. Barely believable.
Post-season went tits-up, unfortunately, but I like to think I played my part. Go Rays....

A well known All Blacks line-out call. Much copied but seldom bettered. Not for the faint hearted.

"It's Glock!"

James Allen in Brazil, 2008.

Barry Davies

Not the "Look at his face" one, but the one from the 1998 World Cup where Bergkamp scores against Argentina. It's a roar that morphs into the word "What" followed by "A Goal!". The smidge of overload in the microphone just makes it perfect.

Hard to find on youtube because of the Fifa copyright police, but for now it's on there...

The Joe Buck thing sounded great though. (ESPN America in Britain didn't have that commentary, alas...)

Qmoq | 30 October 2011 - 2:05pm

Barry Davies

is mint.

That commentary is wonderful. Oddly enough there's another clip of him commentating on the same goal, but with different commentary, presumably a licensing thing of some sort.

I'll be honest and admit to knowing little about soccer

but that was a fantastic display of individual skill. Given the nature of the game, shouldn't the 'greatest moment' be a little more team-based?

0
stimpy | 30 October 2011 - 2:17pm

Since you asked - Brazil 1970

Spartacus Mills | 30 October 2011 - 5:40pm

That's more like it!

0
stimpy | 30 October 2011 - 8:07pm

I still think that the England players

had plenty of opportunities to take him out before he got anywhere near. I certainly would have done, if only as payback for the worst piece of cheating in the history of football he committed a few minutes earlier.

count jim moriarty | 30 October 2011 - 3:38pm

Devious as the 'Hand of God' goal was

Maradona was more sinned against than sinner during his career. In the exact manner that you seem to be advocating, funnily enough. 'Break his legs Terry!'

Great cycling commentary

Back on the subject of great sporting commentaries. Here's (arguably) the greatest call in cycling in the English language.

You have to wait for it a bit on this clip.
Phil Liggett: "That looks like Roche! That looks like Stephen Roche!"
