The Great Hall Of Shame

David Wright's picture

The new Oasis single is pretty mediocre it has to be said, although I expect their forthcoming DVD will make interesting viewing. Surely, if the Gallaghers were going to make another classic album it would have happened by now. These pesky brothers are now just a musical freakshow. Is anyone bothered by any new music they make anymore as we watch them tour the Earth for the next 4 million years like the Stones. At least Simply Red have done the decent thing and (finally) split up. R.E.M. The Stranglers, Queen!!??, The Stones, Ocean Colour Scene also spring to mind, any other nominations for The Great Hall Of Shame most welcome please.

Ain't that a shame

iPod set to "Stones" this evening (but apparently I must get away from the kitchen/music/pre-dinner-Guinness-oops-there-goes-another-red-wine thing if I'm going to live much longer), 2 tracks from the last album popped up, and you know what? They sounded pretty good. Me and the GLW then had a brief chat about the time we saw them at Twickenham four or five years ago, and what a belting night it was. The only time that I've been at a stadium gig, Springsteen included, and everyone was up and at 'em from the opening bars to the encore.

Standard bearers for the blues, an integral part of the sixties cultural revolution, cruelly underrated lyrically, made some astonishing and ground-breaking records at the turn of that decade, went off the boil a bit, (but just a bit, because who's around nowadays who wouldn't chop their 'nads off for a Miss You or a Start Me Up, or even Hey Negrita or It's Only Rock n Roll?). We're blessed to have been born in the time of these beloved entertainers, is there no room for fun anymore?

Name-checked twice and lumped in with Queen and Simply Red? Oh, for shame.

If only Simply Red would get

If only Simply Red would get on with it and split up now, rather than subjecting the public to a 2009 world tour. Maybe I haven't paid their history enough attention (and who could blame me), but are Simply Red an actual band anyway, in that sense - are there other members who've been with that horrible little man all these years?

REM!?!

Why should they be anywhere near a Hall of Shame? If they deserve that honour then Boneo should be serving the drinks in there and Thom Yorke cleaning the toilets. You are right about Queen though.

One trick pony

Oasis, like Quentin Tarantino, should have quit when they realised that their 'talent' did not extend beyond their first venture. I hate to compare them to The Beatles; but they love to, so here goes: The Beatles went from "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" to "Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream" within the space of three years. Pray tell, where have Oasis gone in the last thirteen to fourteen years, except for round and round in their increasingly tedious circle?

And talking of bands quitting, didn't The White Stripes say they were calling it a day after three or four albums?

Stripes

I guess the "quit after 4 albums" shtick is part of the overall high pose/hype count around this "band" - supposedly brother and sister, stupid red/black/white colours, useless but winsome drummer, no bass payer etc etc.

thing that gets me about

thing that gets me about Oasis - shit band by the way - is that the stupid, worthless album, Be Here Now, was release to widepsread acclaim. I recall and, if i went to my garage i could probably retrieve, the Q review which finished with the words: "the boys done good." now of course it is widely rejected as a piece of shit. so how come the initial outstanding review?

Because there is a certain breed...

..of "rock critic" which cannot bear not to be part of the zeitgeist.
That, and the fact that they were probably doing an equal amount of trumpet as the band themselves, so 6 minute songs with endless choruses and a multiple overdubbed guitars probably sounded great to theit mucous-blocked ears.

REM

Guess I was a little harsh with REM although their last album was disappointing I would say their last great album was "New Adventures In Hi-Fi". Can't understand the acclaim the last Oasis album received though, very poor indeed

Late REM

I LOVE New Adventures In Hi-Fi. One of the best albums of the 90s. I also think Up is seriously underrated. Then I lost interest.

Let's hope R.E.M's next

Let's hope R.E.M's next album is a return to form, or we will all lose interest.

U2

As a lifelong fan, I still buy each album with increasing disappointment. I cant let go, my love affair began with October & probably wont ever end, but they just don't make my hair stand on end anymore :o(

Not my hall of shame entry though, just can't bring myself to do that! Just needed to vent my frustration.

My entry has to be Oasis - from a song like Slide Away to wishing they'd do just that! 2 decent albums, they should have stopped after that.

Will Simply Red be splitting?

Surely Simply Red has just been Mick Hucknall and his backing band for years. If I'm wrong, who can name another member of the band? This is just the announcement to get those people who go to one gig a year to make their next choice Simply Red and turn the tour into a money spinning farewell extravaganza that will make a few people very rich.
Hucknall hasn't announced his retirement so when the tour is done, the DVD is out, the live CD/download becomes available the only difference is that future releases will get credited to Hucknall alone.
