Great band names

el toro calvo grande's picture

A couple of weeks back I had a bit of a spree in Fopp, and obne of the acquisitions was an album called "Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump: Original Heavyweight Afrobeat, Highlife & Afro-Funk" by the multi-talented Various Artists.

Upon closer inspection, some of the wonderful funky music is produced by artists with even more funky names including:

- Bola Johnson & His Easy Life Top Beats
- Eric (Showboy) Akaeze & His Royal Ericos
- Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Melody Maestroes
- Sir Shina Peters & His International Stars

and my personal favourite - Tony Tete Harbor & The Star Heaters Of Nigeria.

Other artists on there include The Faces and Rex Williams, although neither sounds like their namesakes (to be truthful I've never heard Rex Williams sing anyway).

What other great band names have the Massive heard over the years?

must admit

I misread that as

Boris Johnson & His Easy Life Top Beats

I've always liked...

Ken Dodd's Dads dogs dead.

OK, they're made up, but...

I raised a chuckle at Private Eye's psychedelic bands in their spoof of Barry Miles' counterculture history London Calling:

Brass Gnat
Sebastian's Flaccid Epergne

and particularly

The Chutney Butler

Finally! A thread for...

...Hoyt Ming & His Pep-Steppers (from the Antholgy Of American Folk Music),and possibly The Light Crust Doughboys (from Western Swing:Texas 1928-44) - only I'm not absolutely sure that I've got their name right.

I have a playlist for this on Spotify...

When I stumble across a band name I like the sound of, regardless of what they sound like, I bung it on the playlist.

A few highlights:
Springbok Nude Girls
MuffPotter
Big Boss Sausage & The Pacifist of Fury
The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black

And my current all-time favourite, which I think is unbeatable:

Rainer Werner Bassfinder

...lest we forget...

Greg Lake's Butter Mountain.

For consideration

My Wife Drinks Pints (Local Band around Reading (1990-ish))

Dogs Die In Hot Cars

Dickie Heart & The Pacemakers

Wayne Kerr & The Tosspots (what my mate and I would've called our band if we'd ever got past 'rehersal' (ie sitting in a room drinking, smoking and generally making a god-awful racket)
