Grand Prix

Johan's picture

There must be one or two motor racing fans amongst the Word massive, so I just wondered what everyone thought of the BBC's coverage?

I thought they really did very well indeed. Everything that was wrong about ITV's coverage has gone - the very annoying commentator, James Allen, has been replace by the excellent Jonathan Legard, the ads have gone of course, and the terrible theme tune has been replaced by ... joy of joys, The Chain by Fleetwood Mac.

And the best thing about ITV's coverage, Martin Brundle, has been retained.

The red button digital features are terrific too - the ability to watch Friday practice, and highlights of previous GPs in the run up to the race.

So I really enjoyed it, and of course the Beeb must be beside themselves that Button won.

Why can't they

just ( yawn ) go round the track once and put us all out of our misery?

As long as all soccer matches last 5 minutes

and consist purely of a sudden death penalty shoot-out. First to score wins.

The world filling up with petrol championships

If I want to watch advertising billboards revolve I'll nip down to the bus stop.

Each to their own

I like a Grand Prix. Has got a bit tedious over the last few years and ITV's coverage was poor. Thought the race itself was good and the coverage very good. The whole Brawn GP story is very interesting and impressive as well.

46 million bucks

that is what Melbourne pays Bernie Eclestone for the rights this year so the talk goes.

Numbers are down each year and it clashes with the start of the Australian footy season start. Frankly no-one ,ok few, give a rats down here.

Even the Who and Counting crows playing couldn't get much interest.

They moved the race to twilight to get a better time slot for overseas viewers so what happens - they are fanging it around in their formula one looking into a low setting sun - better them than me.

Didn't notice much change in coverage

really, but then again sports coverage is the least innovative bit of telly where they still think having a few old pros hanging around making weak jokes is exciting viewing. And what's with those portenous intros on the Rugby making out the 6 nations is the battle of stalingrad or something.

Talking of red buttons and sport coverage

I'm sure I remember a big selling point of digital TV once being that we'd be able to pick from many camera angles - choose the in-car camera we'd like to watch; choose the player we'd like to stay with etc etc

Never really happened did it?

It was nice...

...to be able to actually watch a race again (ITV's ad-breaks always interrupted the race's momentum for me).

I agree it was a wise move for the BBC to retain Brundle (just as it was for ITV to keep the services of Murray Walker), but I miss the late-night highlights programme - surely space could be found for that (following MotD2?).

Great song, shame about the pictures

It was, I agree, absolutely wonderful to have 'The Chain' back in its rightful place, but the opening montage was dreadful. F1 can be very exciting, so who decided not to show any actual racing but some dreadful, but no doubt very expensive, graphics of computer games.

I remember the opening credits when the Beeb last had the coverage and before I knew who or what the music was. The opening bass riff accompanied shots of the build-up to a race, the preparation, the tension before the lights changed. Then, when the guitar soared in, the race started with shots of the speed and reality of racing. It was very exciting.

Now, nothing. no excitement, no sense of speed or danger, just some poxy cartoon.

Apparently F1 needs to reach out to a new audience, it has got too expensive and bloated and as Tony says 'no-one gives a rats'. I think the BBC should have showed some of the characters - the old stagers and the young Turks in the build-up and then conveyed some of the drama and speed. That might encourage people to stay tuned in.

I think, as a sport, F1 is dead on it's feet

The average punter doesn't understand (or care) what's going with all the new rules - different tyre compounds all having to be used during a race, the ever-changing points awards.

The BCC should return to the days of Saturday afternoon rallycross from Lydden Hill - simple, flat-out racing that anyone can understand.

I'd agree,

and I'd go back even further. The Beeb used to get great mileage (and footage) out of both Hill Climb events (blokes in flat caps driving MG Midgets up muddy slopes with the heavyweight Missus bouncing up and down on the boot trying to hammer the driving wheels into the deck for some purchase) and what used to be called motocross I believe, where Fast Show host look-alikes drove Haflingers and lightweight Landies over terrain that looked like a tank training area (and probably was on weekdays). And to (flat) cap all the low budget fun, they even had Murray screaming over the top. Them were the days o'motosport, lad, when a man were a man if he did 'is own welding in't front garden.

This morning, I was welding my Lightweight Landie

in my back garden (genuinely!)

0
stimpy | 30 March 2009 - 12:28pm

technical stuff

was it Ali welding which I hear is quite tricky

0
Chris G | 30 March 2009 - 1:06pm

Noooo...

As you say, v tricky so I don't go near that. Luckily the bodywork on a Lightweight is pretty much all bolt-on

stimpy | 30 March 2009 - 1:35pm

It's what pop-rivets were invented for.

I've a mate who makes a very nice living doing aluminium welding on high spec luxury boats harboured in Tortola, except most of his clients can't spell, and think he does aluminum welding.

Perhaps

I'm on my own but I thought Legard was not as good as Allen.Found him annoying.I understand he's from radio so he overtalks and perhaps will learn to reign it in a bit.

A minor aside (still sport related)

I was watching the boat race yesterday on ITV. Twice they showed a graphic of the race which was like a helicopter going over the course. Instead of showing the graphic, they could have shown a helicopter view of the course.

Big Guxy | 30 March 2009 - 10:41am

Don't get me started

on the bloody boat race. No-one outside of a few Oxbridge Hooray-Henrys gives a shit and yet it still turns up on our screens every year.

0
Johan | 30 March 2009 - 10:04pm

and, for those of us that DO care about rowing

Henley is a LOT more fun anyway.

0
stimpy | 31 March 2009 - 9:22am

Sport, as with news..

...has become more about the medium than the message. Just show us the sport, and tell us the news, please, and dispense with all the bloody graphics and strange camera angles.
