Gordon Brown's given us some money - let's all go and spend it on some toys!

David Hepworth's picture

If I've understood the events of yesterday right the government have put a ton of money into the economy. How they do it I don't claim to know, but this I understand. It'll only work if we go out and spend some of it. So this is what I'm proposing. The Word Massive goes out this weekend and buys something it's been thinking of buying for a while. If your nearest and dearest asks why you have my permission to say, 'I'm saving the economy, darling, so that succeeding generations can have a better life.'

If you're looking for ideas and you already have a Word subscription, allow me to suggest the Oumou Sangare record, which is getting plenty of airtime at my house at the moment. I've been thinking for some time about upgrading my phone line to an ISDN so that I can rivet the nation with my opinions about Michael Jackson without having to visit Broadcasting House quite so often. If anybody out there knows how I can upgrade from ADSL to ISDN on the advice of an actual human being I'd be pleased to hear how.

So we're looking for ideas for spending money. Records, books, DVDs, gadgets, bits of technology, things that members of the Massive can spend money on this weekend in order to increase their personal happiness and "kick start" the stalled jalopy of the British economy. Your ideas, please.

Young Liars

Volume 1 by David Lapham. Its a collection of the first 6 issues of his comic book series and is the best thing I have bought this week.
It's about kids, crime, capers, rock music, sex, suicide attempts, art theft, truth and storytelling. If David Lynch directed Kidulthood the comic version would be something like this.

couldn't agree more

it's excellent, and turns out to be about spiders from mars in the next story arc, so it satisfies the Bowie fan in me too.

A preemptive strike

Been there done that, yesterday. I bought exactly the sort of humungous flatscreen TV with all the trimmings that I've spent the last couple of years deriding at every opportunity.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 6 March 2009 - 9:15am

an upgrade for me...

I bought a 37" Panasonic plasma back in September and have been very pleased with it.

To do my bit for queen and country I finally upgraded my Sky package to HD today - being installed a week tomorrow. I'll be able to watch footballers flobbing in high definition. Nice.

Apple TV

Okay so I'm biased as an Apple user (and am looking at doing my bit for the economy with one of the new 24" iMacs) but I recently got an Apple TV and am loving it. Simple to setup and use, DVD's being ripped to hard drive as we speak, imported to iTunes and voila - lots of movie goodness from the comfort of the sofa. It also does airtunes with the MP3's.

You also get the double whammy of all this DVD ripping means you'll have to go out and buy a bunch of extra hard drives......

chrisf | 6 March 2009 - 9:25am

Another shout for Apple

Have you been thinking of switching from your pc for a while? Now is the time to leap. As mentioned above, Apple have re-vamped the iMac (and Powermac & Mac Mini) so now is the time to find out what all the fuss is about.

0
ChaosandMorphine | 6 March 2009 - 9:52am

Apple TV

Don't forget to purchase & download Airfoil so you can transmit Spotify to your TV (assuming you have decent speakers... if not then get some).

You can also hack the ATV if you are feeling brave, such that you can have iPlayer on your TV. It is a lot better quality than you expect...

0
Andrew Bradley | 6 March 2009 - 1:15pm

agreed.....

Have the Apple TV hooked up to an amp via an optical connection and airfoil running on both MBP and iMac. Very cool to be able to stream spotify to the Hi-Fi. As to hacking / iplayer - I simply use iplayer grabber to download what I want and then add to iTunes. Agree the quality is surprisingly good.

chrisf | 6 March 2009 - 4:47pm

Been there, done that

Pre-empted the Gordon Darling initiative yesterday to take Mrs B out for the annual tussle with a clothes shop and buy her an outfit for relative's weddng next weekend. Like pulling teeth let me tell you.

My dosh is currently in a post-ISA piggy bank (APR 0%) awaiting the much, er, awaited release (in Beany Arena anyway) of the new CD by Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (their first since 1991). As webmaster of their Myspace domain I shall be party (it's my party) to a pre-release copy next week of said Green and Blue thingy. My review is imminent.

I had thought of travelling to Tokyo for their 3 concerts later in March, tickets a staggering £100 each, but thought The Green Mandelson would not approve. Wonder if The Word might like to send me? I have my own pen and writer's pad.

www.myspace.com/davestewartbarbaragaskin - samples coming soon.

0
Beany | 6 March 2009 - 9:37am

The minute I heard the news...

...I rushed out and bought an iPhone.

A few hours later I got home to discover that there is literally no O2 signal in my flat.

Damn Gordon Brown.

0
Fraser Lewry | 6 March 2009 - 9:57am

If you're like me

and you've got a new iPhone, the last thing you want to do with the thing is actually ring anyone with it

0
Joe R | 6 March 2009 - 2:41pm

Fantasy Island

I’d suggest everybody spends some of Gordon’s monopoly money on a copy of Fantasy Island by Larry Elliott and Dan Atkinson. Published in 2007, just before the economy went tits-up, it predicts the forthcoming catastrophe and explains why it was inevitable.
Meanwhile I’m lashing out about £150 on a new shower pump, which is terrifically exciting.
Anyone know any squirrel recipes?

Need a new mixer tap.

0

Bathstore

Seeing as Viv Nicholson is now the Government-approved role model for any patriot wishing to do their bit for the economy, go to Bathstore rather than B&Q. They do a nice tap in there.

0
Richard Lowe | 6 March 2009 - 10:30am

NEVER

go to Bodgit & Quit, they will always cause you grief. I speak from bitter and expensive experience.

Dual purpose purchase

Started last night, from Amazon UK:

Babylon 5 - The Complete Collection, on DVD, all TV series (including Crusade) and all the movies - £57.17

Keeps me in Mr Mandy's good books AND, by getting rid of acres of his old videos, clears shelf space for more of my books and CDs.

(I know B5 isn't top of every Word readers poll, but for those interested:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Babylon-Complete-Collection-Exclusive-Amazon-co-...

6 left in stock at time of posting)

0
millymollymandy | 6 March 2009 - 1:49pm

Buiks!

Approach your favoured book outlet and buy an armful of Wordsworth Classics' "Tales of Mystery and the Supernatural" Series. £2.99 a pop and each one a stone-cold classic. If HP Lovecraft or MR James is your thing - and if not, why not? - then it's worth shelling out for as many as you can lay your paws on.

0
Con Coleman | 6 March 2009 - 10:17am

This weekend?: None for me

I've been thinking about a Nintendo DS for some time, also my laptop needs upgrading as it's shortly to become officially obsolete.

However I can't do anything about either this weekend as I'll be spending most of it in the assembly hall of my old high school "doing the sound" for rehearsals of an am-dram production of The King and I.

I'd be going for that Babylon 5 offer if I hadn't already bought the first two series and movie in separate boxes.

0
Dr Yang | 6 March 2009 - 10:52am

oh the DS is great fun...

feck the laptop. It's only 'officially obsolete' cos THEY want you to think that. Can you type stuff and faff about on t'interweb? Course y'can. There you go. Get the DS and don't look back!

0
ivan | 6 March 2009 - 12:15pm

Officially obsolete

Apparently means if it breaks they won't fix it and they won't sell me the parts to try it myself. In fairness it is five years old and I use it every day for work (and coming on here).

The DS does look like great fun though... I might hold out and see if I can get a bargain DS lite when the DSi comes out in April.

0
Dr Yang | 6 March 2009 - 1:46pm

I bought a clothes rail yesterday...

not very exciting but it's good to feel I'm doing my bit to drag the economy out of the mire.

A subscription to The New Yorker

It really is suprisingly good reading (only trouble is,I never get time to read anything else aside of course from Word Magazine)

0
Martin Simmonds | 6 March 2009 - 11:27am

Targetted spend

I'm planning to target my spending in the pubs of old Grimsby this evening, thereby both doing my bit for the wider economy and also specifically addressing the concerns off the beleagured pub, beer and pickled egg industries. Will no doubt also target the fish and chip and mushy pea industries and possibly a nightclub or two later on to round of my good work.

My middle name is selfless.

I have recently been devouring the novels of shirley hazzard and overusing my new hard drive video recorder - would recommend both.

0
Dave Holley | 6 March 2009 - 11:51am

CD,etc

I've got a nice day off today, and have done my bit for the country by buying the Alela Diane LP, and will soon be off for a wax.

0
JoLean | 6 March 2009 - 12:05pm

Buy a bike...

... the weather is nice today, and when I was out yesterday I had Love's Theme playing on my ipod. The combination of sunshine and music made me think I was in a film. This was far too nice an experience not to recommend to everyone else...

Netbook or Car Insurance?

I've been considering one of those little netbook PCs for no other reason than pure whim ... but unfortunately the car insurance is due. Bugger!

0

Iggy's right

Go to Swift Cover. So very cheap.

0
ChaosandMorphine | 6 March 2009 - 2:00pm

I'd buy a Blu-Ray player

but there don't seem to be any decent discs around yet.

0
eddie g | 6 March 2009 - 12:49pm

The Creme Blu-Ray

It's true there aren't many great films yet, but my SO bought a Pioneer LX-71 the other day and we were only yesterday sitting slackjawed watching the Deserts episode of Planet Earth. It's almost worth having just for this series ...

If you get one that also upscales DVDs well and plays recorded DVDs, which our older DVD players didn't, then it can start to look like a good deal-though there are cheaper BD players, and cheaper upscalers etc

0
SpaceBoy | 9 March 2009 - 11:20am

My new Full HD TV

allegedly upscales, but I was a bit disappointed to find that most DVDs look pretty ropy compared with SD digital satellite. Do Blu-ray players or latest-generation upscaling DVD players really noticeably improve image quality? If so, I might be up for one.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 9 March 2009 - 12:05pm

Yes for sure on most Blu-Ray

Yes for sure on most Blu-Ray disks: 2001, Planet Earth, Independence Day, Men in Black, ... (yes we like SF).

Some DVDs look better (Fifth Element), some in some scenes (Close Encounters), some do not (Drowning by Numbers). The thing that has really impressed me is the upscaling on recorded DVDs from Freeview TV, we felt that really was doing something useful compared to off-air picture.

TV is a 43" Pioneer from 2006-known to be FullHD.

0
SpaceBoy | 9 March 2009 - 12:14pm

I'm joining the ipod generation this weekend

Finally giving in and buying one after much research and debate. Saturday, John Lewis will see me do the deed.

Wish me luck.

0
Diz | 6 March 2009 - 1:23pm

Speaking of which

I'll be in London on Monday 16th and plan to buy an iPod then. I could pick one up here tonight on my way home, but it's my birthday that day so I plan to spend all day in town and treat myself to an iPod as part of the day.
Is there anywhere to go (perhaps down Tottenham Court Road?) to pick up a bargain, or is it better just to head for John Lewis, a store which I've always enjoyed anyway? Advice welcomed.

0
Gatz | 6 March 2009 - 3:00pm

aren't online prices usually better usually

you can traipse up and TCR but you'll find them cheaper online I'm sure. I know sometimes you just want something now. There's a richer sounds round the corner in new oxford st and you could always go and worship at the apple temple sorry shop on regents st.

0
Chris G | 6 March 2009 - 3:05pm

I've looked

Thanks Chris, but I've tried pricerunner. I'm looking for an iPod classic 120gb, which seems to have a standard price of £175. Amazon was the cheapest online at £162 (iirc) but if I was out when it was delivered (as is likely) I would probably have to spend the money I had saved on a cab to and from a warehouse on some godforsaken industrial estate to pick it up.

0
Gatz | 6 March 2009 - 3:28pm

getting a deal on an iPod

is not easy. So I would forget saving a couple of quid or getting it bundled with a set of cheap speakers & go to John Lewis. If anything goes wrong their customer service is pretty good.

0
ChaosandMorphine | 6 March 2009 - 3:11pm

There's always the direct from Apple option

They've got their store on Regent Street, or if you order online you can have some words engraved on the back.

0
Dr Yang | 6 March 2009 - 3:46pm

suggestion s for engraving

"This will break the day after the warranty runs out."
" no i'm not listening to coldplay"
" this machine only plays old"
"what does Tom from Keane's face look like in the back of a spoon"
or possible " I bought this lovely new shiny Ipod because Gordon told me to"

0
Chris G | 6 March 2009 - 3:51pm

As I'll be 42 that day ...

... perhaps I could go with 'The meaning to life, the universe and everything'

0
Gatz | 6 March 2009 - 3:53pm
Chris G | 6 March 2009 - 4:11pm

Airports

Why not wait until you fly next, and buy your iPod at an airport tax-free?

0
KDH | 8 March 2009 - 11:25pm

It's an either or thing

I was going to go away for a few days but couldn't work up enough enthusiasm. I'm spending the money on the iPod instead of a cheap flight and a couple of nights ion a cheaper hotel.

0
Gatz | 9 March 2009 - 11:29am

Apparently...

...we should all be buying property or gold because the expectation is that hyper-inflation follows Quantitative Easing.

I am buying myself a nice pair of shoes.

0

Quantitative Easing

...always sounds like a remedy for constipation to me :-)

American Prometheus

It's only a tenner (or £30 for the hardback). It's the biography of Robert Oppenheimer, generally referred to as the father of the atomic bomb. He was so much more - a polymath, a complex political man and a victim of McCarthyism. I've just started it so can't really give it a wholehearted endorsement and say it's a brilliant read; but on the other hand you'll be hard pushed to find a bad review. I'm anticipating that it will engross, thrill and enlighten me. I believe it's also very light on the physics of an atomic bomb, so don't let that put you off.
I might buy some of those Sennheiser earphones recommended elsewhere in the blog the other day.

0
Carl Parker | 6 March 2009 - 2:22pm

If you read that

and it does indeed sound very interesting, and you then want to read a work of literature that wasn't very light on the physics, try Richard Rhodes' masterpiece "The Making of the Atomic Bomb".
It's also very good on the history, as far as I know.

Was about to suggest that the BBC's superb drama on Oppenheimer with Sam Waterston should be out on DVD but it *is*-I think that'll be my first quantitatively eased purchase of the day-another happily Word-induced serendipity-thanks.

0
SpaceBoy | 8 March 2009 - 10:40am

Does this work if I give my money to charity?

Am I the only who feels weighed down with the tonne of crap we all buy.

Buying a new amp recently meant I did get nice new sounds but I'm also left with several huge boxes, bits of polystyrene, strange cloth bags the thing came in and some cheap cables I don't need.
I also can't see simply buying more stuff on credit (collective credit this time) is really going to help anyone in the long run oh and now I hear the Wire is going to be on normal telly I crossed that off my list.

0
Chris G | 6 March 2009 - 2:47pm

I hear that....

there is a great charity called 'The Irish Economy', maybe you could put the money into that!!

0
humphreym | 6 March 2009 - 3:29pm

thanks for that

Bono...

0
ivan | 6 March 2009 - 3:45pm

I did stand several rounds

when some Irish friends came over the other day if that counts. sadly the money from me buying no line on the horizon ends up in Holland so not much help there I'm afraid.....

0
Chris G | 6 March 2009 - 3:46pm

I wanted to buy.....

No Line On The Horizon on vinyl today, but it was €30!! Maybe it's cheaper in Holland!

0

A more needy charity

is one called Iceland so anyone who hasn't invested in a few Sigur Ros cd's would be well advised to do so on charitable as well as musical grounds.

Bought this combo amp second-hand from my favourite Norwich emporium on Monday.

Got it for a good price, and they threw in a cheap acoustic guitar, which I've given to my delighted grand-daughter. (This was, nonetheless, much better than *my* first guitar, since she doesn't need both hands and a G-clamp to hold down a chord....)

I`ve just been shown the delights of Spotify by the good people at `The Word`. I would love to stream this to my dowstairs hi-fi. How can it be done. I already have Sky+ and other convetional wired bits. What do I need. Keep it simple so I can keep up though.

How does £10 plus P&P sound?

You're unlikely to find a cheaper and easier way to do it than this:
http://cpc.farnell.com/thomson/vs470u/av-sender-thomson/dp/AV1850705?_re...
Just use the audio bit and ignore the video altogether. Top tip: If you order anything from CPC always order a few leads - they're very cheap and you can never have too many in your drawer just in case.

The power of the Word Massive. Its out of stock!!

Should have ordered them all myself and stuck them on ebay!

Sorry about that - I did check they had it in stock before I posted and it wasn't showing as "limited availability" so I guess they must have shifted a few over the weekend. Keep an eye open, they often have stuff like that in their sales catalogues.

3 points

Three things
1. I was thinking of getting a new car so as DH has now given me permission I'll focus the mind more and splash the cash.
2. If I call the nearest and dearest "darling" permission is more likely to be overridden!
3. How are we supposed to afford all this when at the same time that GB has put more money in, the Bank of England has reduced my income in the form of interest rate cuts.

0
JohnW | 6 March 2009 - 7:24pm

Pure and simple

My daredevil consumer assualt to save the nation's economy will see me acquiring a Pure Avanti Flow DAB radio, iPod dock, internet radio, space shuttle launcher, etc. Looks great, you can plonk your iPod on it, pick up podcasts off t'web, stream music to it from your PC, oh and err... listen to the radio. Just need to work out how to link it to Spotify and you have the mother of all jukeboxes. Not actually seen or heard one yet but a a couple of gushing reviews on the internet has sold it to me.

0
eddie | 6 March 2009 - 10:01pm

By coincidence...

... I got a very nice reminder to re-subscibe to The WORD by publisher Jerry P to-day; and at a very attractive rate (My wife went the hairdresser to-day and that was more expensive!)

Will be sending off the form to-morrow.

Hope this helps your economy :-)

New Tweed

Coat i was give at my 21st is getting a little tight, no doubt due to my failure to stretch it properly as a young chap at college. nothing to do with putting on a few pounds over the years....

Actually i was planning to take myself to Brocklehursts for a new coat and perhaps matching trousers, if Gordon is paying where should Isend the invoice?

0
Sebastian Beach | 7 March 2009 - 1:25am

Brad Mehldau, wireless etc

As far as more music goes I am very tempted to explore more Brad Mehldau after excellent R3 Podcast-heard the radio version
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00j0g0b
so don't yet know if his cheeky cover of Wonderwall, or rather more admiring version(s) of Paranoid Android are included in 'cast.

Meanwhile I am starting to think about a media PC etc for my weekday/some weekends (small) flat where I have an Arcam Solo,
http://www.arcam.co.uk/products,solo,Music-Systems,SoloMusic.htm
classic Mission 770 speakers and a Panasonic LCD TV. I'd like uncompressed access to CDs, easy access to things like iPlayer etc.

Based in part on comments on Word site I am thinking one way will be to get one of these servers
http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=67
for putting music and backups on, one of these
http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_squeezebox.html
for playing essentially music from the server even when the PC is off, and one of these
http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/family/mac_mini?mco=MTE3M...
to do at least iPlayer/iPod servicing etc, but possibly quite a lot more depending on how well it works with a TV tuner etc.

I know many of you watch TV on laptops, use Spotify a lot etc etc. My query is slightly different, how well do Squeezebox/iMac and their ilk replace good-quality AV equipment e.g. do you notice that you are playing a ripped DVD and not a real one, or a FLAC file and not a CD etc ?
