Good enough idiot proof video camera
Hannah in a previous post mentioned a Flip Ultra HD 8Gb camera was on sale with £50 off using a promotional code. Well I took advantage of it and ordered one for £70 (RRP £160). It works and I recommend it. The only two iffy things about it is that it can't film close ups (anything closer than about 30cm will be out of focus and the zoom function is useless) and it needs to be held static in order to get a good picture (when you move the picture becomes very juddery).
It's simple point and record stuff and the editing software couldn't be much easier to use. Footage can be exported into Windows Media format (and probably the Mac equivalent) so you can drop it in Pinnacle or Windows Movie Maker etc for more detailed editing.
It's the size of a thick mobile phone. It's not great, but it's good enough for filming family and holidays. Or as a toy for kids.

Another good option is the
Kodak Zi8
Does pretty much what the Flip does, but also has the ability to add an external mic, which will make your sound a lot better.

Mine arrived the other day...
and I agree with everything you say, Mr speaker (may I just call you LOUD?). It's loads of fun, perfect for family shoots, far from perfect, but at that price nothing to quibble about!
My 9 year
old nephew loves it. I had to edit his 56 minute opus (spread over only 9 shots) down to 7 minutes. It helps if you have Windows 7 as it accepts MP4 and AAC as standard. My own computer (a few years old) keeps crashing when editing over 5 minutes of footage in Windows Movie Maker. My dad's computer seems fine with the footage.
