Gong - live at the HMV Forum, Kentish Town 27/11.09

popesta's picture

A packed Forum ejoyed sets by The Steve Hillage Band and Gong. Hillage's band played a half-hour set, and were joined by Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Theo Travis as Gong.

Both bands were very loud, choosing to rock out rather any hippie noodling.

In addition, to the loudness there was a blinding visual and lighting show.

It's good to see a band with members in their 70s playing with as much energy and passion as bands even half their age.

nothing but the good things

have I heard about this tour, here's a quote from a mate:

I went to see Gong last night. Without exaggeration James, they were the best band I've seen in years. A total sonic attack on the senses. Amazing lightshow, amazing drummer, Steve Hillage on top form and Daveid Allan was Daveid Allan! ;-)
If you get the chance up your neck of the woods - go see them.

from the era of the pot-head pixies

Ha ha, showing my age, but I saw them at the Hammersmith Palais in 1974 and everyone sat on the floor spreading essence of patchouli and skinning up - it were a different world, by 'eck

I saw them in '97

and they were bloody awful - to my ears anyway. On my way out of the (same, I think) venue halfway through, having had enough, I heard someone else say approvingly "They're still tight!" Perhaps you need to be a fan?

Fishpot

I saw them live in Bristol last month and though I missed the Hillage set (he was on ridiculously early) Gong were absolutely superb, easily one of the best gigs I've ever seen.

I saw Gong a couple of times about 10 years ago and wasn't massively impressed, despite being a big fan. With Hillage playing alongside Daevid though the Bristol gig was a completely different teapot of fish - absolutely superb.
