Glen Campbell: Wow. Just Wow.

Burt Kocain's picture

I've been listening to his last/latest album, "Ghost On The Canvas". It's just astonishingly great. I've been disappointed by most geriatric returns-to-form (Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Brian Wilson - and - *groan* - His Dylanosity, etc) but this one needs no "good for his age" qualifications. It's flat-out fantastic.

First up, there's no artful Rick Rubinesque "authenticity" here; the production is lush and clear. Second, his singing is beautifully judged. He's not straining, he hits the notes, he sounds just like you'd want the Wichita Lineman to sing, near the end of the line. Third, the songs are gorgeous, a beautifully constructed suite around the themes of growing old and looking back. Very emotional, but not over-emoting.

Glen apparently has Alzheimer's disease. It took eight years to kill my mum, and I can think of easier ways out. This will probably be his last album - to say that it ranks right up there with his greatest hits (and who had greater?) is not a sympathy vote. If you can still sing fragments of his heyday hits, you owe it to yourself to get this. Dim the lights, get a glass of brandy to drink to his health, and try to hold back the tears.

We are not worthy - Wrecking Crew guitar hotrodder, part-time Beach Boy, one of the greatest vocalists in pop - they don't make them like him any more.

I concur

It's a top notch album, I was very pleasantly surprised. If I was Teddy Thompson I'd be well chuffed to be covered by Mr. C.

another vote

for the album from me. Great songs. Great voice and production is nicely evocative of earlier days.

I left out "actor" -

- but he put in a winning (if hairstyle-inadequate) performance in True Grit, too.

If you like that one....

....the you ought to hear the one before "Meet Glen Campbell", which is one of the best records he's made.

Meet Glen Campbell

... listening to it as we speak. I'm blown away. In a better world ... (etc. etc.)

I got my copy from the local Walmart (apparently) and they were nice enough to include five remixes of his Greatest Hits - well worth shopping at Walmart for!

I'm also surprised by the quality and consistency of his heyday albums; great songs by great songwriters, sung by a great singer, to great arrangements played by great musicians. Whatever happened to *that*?

Any excuse to re-post this is welcome.

Not a bad guitarist either: 'Galveston' is one of my all time faves and this is a scorching performance:

I'm thinking, "yeah ..

pretty good tone" when he starts the solo - and then he rips it right up, doesn't he? Great to see the faces of his band when it happens, too ...

Adoration

Tipped off to this by a fellow Massivista a few years back.

Wow. Just wow.
