Glastonbury 2010 - Let's Go!
Posted by DrJ on 21 June 2010 - 9:03am.
OK, it's Glasto week so I'm starting the thread! Who's going, who's not going, who wants to see who, advice, faves, worsties, etc...
Me: Hope to get there Thursday afternoon. After my first Glasto last year, I'm not going to make the rookie mistake of trying to be everywhere at once but there are a few things I'm looking forward to MGMT, and Saturday night with Nick Lowe and Christy Moore. If I get to catch Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Hot Chip, The Flaming Lips, Judy Collins, Rolf, Willie Nelson, then great.

Hopefully getting there for the England game on wed!
add to the above - Phenomenal Handclap Band, Richard Thompson, TheXX, Stevie Wonder
Weather forecast GOOD!
am gigging elsewhere
most of the weekend - They Might be Giants at RFH, Macca in Hyde Park so hoping for good weather and will catch bits on the TV and radio.
Glastonbury
I have never been, always wanted to, none of my "gang" fancy it.
What are the chances of a single, 55year old (next year) having a decent fist of it.
Only ever been to the local festival (Solfest), been 4 times, about 900 at the first one in 2004, about 10,000 at my last one in 2008. Absolutely loved it, cant go this year, night shifts all weekend (not allowed to book bank holiday weekends off )
to be honest, i am nervous about even applying for glastonbury, my reasoning being that if I got a ticket I would have to go, but if I dont apply, I get the best seat in the house, Sky+ it, watch it over 2 weeks or so without missing any, cold guinness, warm dry bed...........
What a sad old git.
Plus side ??....... ITS FUCKING GLASTONBURY.
honest, genuine advice // feedback much appreciated.
BTW, how easy // hard is it to get a ticket?? How easy to remember the camping space?/ What is the score with personal security??
Peace & Love.
If you have a taste for it...
...I'm sure you'd love it. I went for the first time last year at 34, and wondered why I hadn't been before. Maybe I won't enjoy it as much this year, no novelty, etc, but I doubt it. For the record, I had never spent a night camping in a tent before.
There are different ways of doing it: camping, caravan, tipi, luxury boutique "tents" and you could have a great time without going near any of the main stages. Found it easy to get a ticket this year, just had to be a bit organised and register at the right time and all that.
You shouldn't be nervous! It's definitely worth doing once.
Glastonbury
Been last 2 years and I'm over 50. It's got something for everyone. Devistated haven.t been able to get a ticket this year. Evening thinking of joining some teens to try and jump the fence. Two of them manged to last year!!!! On the otherhand I'd rather not have to walk about 10 miles to get in.
ANYONE GOT A SPARE TICKET PLEASE>
Massive meet-up
Shouldn't the Glasto-bound members of the Massive be meeting up under a massive flag that obscures satisfactory TV viewing or at the premium organic pie stall so beloved of Andrew Harrison?
Massive meet up 2
Dont know how much of your post is tongue in cheek, but it sounds like a plan to me.
It's already started...
I live fairly nearby and someone's just told me that the roads around Street and Wells are already chocka with cars and campers waiting for the car parks to open tomorrow night (Tuesday) and the festival site on Wednesday at 8am.
It seems that you need to get there earlier and earlier to prevent having to camp in that bit by the Other Stage where everybody walks over your tent.
I'm going first thing Wednesday, putting up my tent and then going back to work until Thursday evening. I remember when (not that long ago) when I'd turn up on Friday lunchtime and still be able to find somewhere clear to pitch.
Looking forward to Gorillaz, Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Jackson Browne and Teddy Thompson plus checking out the new Blues and Jazz area Bourbon Street.
Glasto virgin
When I read evocative posts like this, I feel more & more certain that i must go
Dont have a clue what street & wells is // are though.
Street's a town and Wells is a City
..in Somerset. The festival is actually closer to Shepton Mallet than Glastonbury.
I remember when
it was all fields round Worthy Farm.
Other stage tents
My teenage son actually got there early to camp right next to the walkway by the Other stage.
Sadly I can't go this year, though I'd have loved to..
... but the only advice I offer is never drink more than two consecutive pints of hot cider unless you really really want to fall asleep.
Also camping near the accoustic field is pretty sensible. Less likely to have people falling into your tent.
If the toilets distress you the ones near the family field are pretty damn good.
And finally people dressed as pirates are to be pitied from afar, not actively engaged with.
At the risk of being exasperatingly boring...
....have I mentioned the Quintessence partial-reunion at this year's Glasto....? :-)
Their start times have altered in the past week, so just those who are going have NO excuse to miss them they're at:
Rabbit Hole Stage, Saturday 8pm
Glade Stage, Sunday 6pm
They'll be featured on BBC2's coverage with interviews and hopefully a little of the saturday show sometime on Sunday afternoon.
here's a bit of their set from the Kralingen festival ('the european Woodstock') in 1970. Clearly, the original film editor didn't know what on earth to do with what would have been a 20+ minute version of the song, so just kept the first verse and grafted it onto the reprise at the end, ditching the blistering psychedelic rock wig-out in the middle... I wonder will Sunday afternoon's BBC2 editor be faced with the same problem? :-D
Can one of you please take a saw with you...
and cut down those bloody flags that obscure the stage.
drop a
tactical nuclear bomb on it so it doesn't kill any cows
