Glastonbury 2010

Adman's picture

Ten minutes in and Reggie's already dropped the 'A bomb' twice...
Glastonbury 2010 is already, officially, amaaaaaazing!
EDIT: 7:16 p.m. - make that three times 'amazing'.

OK - de rigueur this year is to have a mini drum kit on stage to bash - first La Roux, now Ellie Goulding...

Now there's a man riding an Indian motorcycle on the wall of death... oddly, no-one has mentioned Richard Thompson.

0

Richard Thompson...

he's AMAAAAAAAAZING!

3
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 7:32pm

The mini drum kit

has replaced that mini synth thing that was terribly in vogue a few years back, used by a certain strain of artiste to convey the message that, yes, they could play something actually. Bjork had one. They were replaced by the laptop, preferably a MacBook.

0
Prestonia | 25 June 2010 - 7:35pm

Florence and the Machine...

not AMAAAAAAAAAZING.

0
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 7:36pm

Florence: like punk

never 'appened!

Er, actually, add to that the 40 year survival of Glastonbury.

...more drums, more bloody 'extra' drums... argh!

0
Adman | 25 June 2010 - 7:43pm

Florence

Twaddle. Twaddle Twaddle Twaddle.

Twaddle.

Cosmic Love? No, love. You're not.

0
Beezer | 25 June 2010 - 8:06pm

florence

oh fuck shes on again bleeting with dizzie - wheres me sniper rifle?

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:20pm

Florence, sadly not as nice as the place in Italy

Is it just me, but what is all the fuss about Florence. She can't sing, terrible! The crowd seemed to like her though.

0
David Wright | 26 June 2010 - 8:20am

Oh,

Is it the time of year when we all slag Florance and the Machine off? That's come around quick.

0
Doug B | 26 June 2010 - 2:07pm

Who are these Indistinguishable Serious Boys

on the Red Button Coverage? Interpol? Editors? They're dull.

*turns over*

Oh, Florence.

*pours soup in the telly*

2
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 7:37pm

Ooh Mumfords

are on the live online coverage. They're good, but I stand by my assessment that they are basically the Levellers + a bath + a haircut + a stern talking to from their dads.

5
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 7:55pm

To me they're more like Mr Martin's plodders.

but banging out 4/4 G Am C D chord progressions on mandolin for novelty - Folkplay if you will...

1
Mr Fade | 25 June 2010 - 8:11pm

Bang to Rights!!

I was getting a whiff of the Levellers, but you have absolutely nailed them

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 8:42pm

Totally disagree

You shoulda been there. Massive crowd - I couldn't get into the tent and there were easily as many outside as in and the atmosphere carried outside - spontaneous singing, clapping and you could feel the love. Watching online is clearly a diminished experience. - I've seen the Levellers a few times, but the vibe and ethic is very different.

0
Mr Sparks | 26 June 2010 - 9:33am

I like 'em.

I enjoy their music, and think they are a lovely bunch of lads who would be most welcome to serenade me in the folk-style. Perhaps I could even administer a stern talking to, if one was required.

Luckily, I don't know enough of The Levellers to fully comprehend if Joe's comparison is correct. Ignorance is bliss...

0
Gauntlet | 26 June 2010 - 12:58pm

I said they're good

they are good fun rollicking party music. Like the Levellers. The vibe (aka haircuts & drugs) might be different but the music is pretty damned close.

0
Joe Muggs | 26 June 2010 - 1:45pm

Oh Joe,

if we keep agreeing with each other in a way that leads to crazy misunderstandings about whether or not we are agreeing or disagreeing, we are going to have ourselves the makings of a screwball comedy. ;-)

0
Gauntlet | 26 June 2010 - 8:54pm

Festival themed screwball comedy, eh?

Mud Actually

Four Stages and a Bogroll

Michael Eavis' Dairy

2
Adman | 26 June 2010 - 9:05pm

I've got one of those new flat tellies

and just can't get my soup into it. Any ideas?

0
Prestonia | 25 June 2010 - 8:00pm

you really aren't trying

now are you?

I'm watching Unfolding Universe on Discovery Science, it saves wasting soup

0
James Blast | 25 June 2010 - 8:34pm

When are Budgie on?

Has anyone got any skins?

4
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 7:43pm

After

The Climax Blues Band, I think!

0
Mark JF | 25 June 2010 - 10:52pm

Hark... Is that Hawkwind I can hear

playing on a flatbed truck outside the gates?

0
stimpy | 26 June 2010 - 9:05pm

Florence

drops the F bomb. Good girl! There's a little bit of rock n roll still left in the place.

0
sandamiano | 25 June 2010 - 7:56pm

Fake?

Fraudulent? Flat? FairlyAwful?

0
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 8:02pm

Nah she's a nice kid

She was still hungover on my vodka when she played Glastonbury this time last year.

0
sandamiano | 25 June 2010 - 8:04pm

Lawks!

I just got in from the garden, put the TV on and sat down with a beer. I was treated to Florence baying very flatly on a loooooong note. Not for me.

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 8:18pm

Vampire Weekend

They are Afraid to rock. I may need more drink than I have to hand if I'm going to lighten up - I've only got one bottle of Laphraoig, two bottles of Shiraz and eight Red Stripe.

Where's Willie Nelson? Did Snoop duet with him?

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 8:26pm

They could at least have made an effort...

and emerged from a giant bulb of garlic that descended from the lighting rig.

2
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 8:29pm

glastonbury/bbc presenters

i wish someone would drop the a-bomb on reggie and smug whiley - john peel is missed more than ever in our house when i watch the coverage now! i genuinely wonder what glastonbury is nowadays - lots of identikit bands over 3 days with the odd surprise thrown in, or moreover something for all the hoxton bbc presenters to brag about days before and after like they know about music... someone please kill edith during an interview, i'll donate money if needed to help the cause! its about music, not turgid banter, stupid huge flag carriers and the'you had to be there maaaaan' ethos!...... there, rant over, i'll return to under my stone!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 8:53pm

I quite enjoyed Hot Chip

Not telegenic, though

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 9:05pm

hot chip

i just dont get them - surely theres an office in slough thats missing their IT dept this weekend!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:25pm

Tssk, don't be dork-ist

They are wonderful and work really well live, although something about their sound never comes over on the tele.

0
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 9:47pm

sorry...

not being dorkest really - just not my hot chip cuppa tea! ah well, snoops on, normality is restored!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:57pm

Apparently Dizzee Rasquirrel is on soon...

that should be something.

0
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 9:07pm

After Newsnight, he is MISTER Rascal

Oh noes , she's BACK!! Lowing flatly. Oh dear.

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 9:19pm

florence

dizzie, boot her the feck off stage man - she'd really brighten my day... if she just f*cked right off and stopped trashing kate bushe's legacy!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:23pm

(Puff, Pant, Puff, Pant)

Phew, sorry I'm late - what have I missed so far?

1
Grant | 25 June 2010 - 9:15pm

Just catching the end of

Corrine Bailey Ray on BBC4.
Beautiful, talented and tuneful.
She has won herself a new fan here.

0
Adman | 25 June 2010 - 9:21pm

I'll catch that later

I seem to be mired here.

Did Florence guest with Corinne too ?

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 9:24pm

florence

she'd guest with a dead body if it gave her even more 'kooky kudos' miles!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:27pm

I think

you are safe...

(That's Corinne Bailey Rae, oops!)

0
Adman | 25 June 2010 - 9:33pm

re

jeez i hope so - hang on theirs a knock at the door... oh its florence, shes wants to guest with me making a cup if tea!

1
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:33pm

Willie Nelson coming up on bbc4

This has been a Public Service Announcement

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 9:28pm

'Coiffured bob' and battered geetar

in the house!

(Willie seems to have adopted the vocal stylings of Lou Reed circa the 'New York' album.)

0
Adman | 25 June 2010 - 9:36pm

That guitar

it must be as old as he is.

0
Steerpike | 25 June 2010 - 9:34pm

Sound is ropy

Unfortunately Willie Nelson is being mixed by someone who would rather hear piano and harmonica than The Man Himself

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 9:38pm

snoop dog

'put your mutha-fuckin' hands in the air'... couldnt they have had him on at 7pm - auntie bbc, you so safe!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:37pm

I've boycotted Disney Rapscallion and Snoopy The Dog

or whatever they are called because I have been reliably informed that they intended to merely talk about assaulting defenceless women and murdering people with firearms. Not even sing, just talk! Imagine!

2
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 9:45pm

scandalous!

i could do that, only with a slightly more convincing yorkshire accent than snoops doing!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:54pm
Steerpike | 25 June 2010 - 9:39pm

Bill

Not Snoop.

0
Steerpike | 25 June 2010 - 9:40pm

Ships in the Night

He's singing that just now

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 9:45pm

I've just heard someone exhorting me to...

"put my motherfuckin' hands in the air". I checked and it wasn't Budgie.

2
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 9:41pm

mutha-fuckin!

well just do it then - or get your ass cap busted homebase boy - or something like that i think, damned hard all this street slang muguffin!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 9:52pm

The BBC have kindly informed me that...

THIS PERFORMANCE CONTAINS SWEARING.

No fuckin' kiddin' muthafuckers!

0
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 9:55pm

mutha fuckin swearing

auntie beeb is only looking after you Patrick - it has all our best interests at heart when it comes to mutha-fuckin swearing!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 10:00pm
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 10:57pm

Willie Nelson's timing

He's singing way ahead of the band - he's always pushed on a little but he's half a bar ahead when he starts a verse and at least a full bar ahead when he finishes it.

And because I think he's great, I'll think of this as an artist at work

2
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 9:49pm

Paul On The Drums

is ruining it, just like he did in Dublin a couple of weeks ago

0
Pat Carty | 25 June 2010 - 9:59pm

Based on tonight,I think it was all Willie

He was so early with the vocals - 2 beats ahead of his own guitar & the rest of the band - that it all sounded a bit skewed.

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 10:35pm

Vocals two beats ahead of

Vocals two beats ahead of his own guitar? That's actually pretty impressive. A difficult trick.

0
Mark Wallace | 27 June 2010 - 1:19pm

OMG!!!!

I ventured into our lounge to find out who was murdering Willie Nelson's Crazy

Turns out it was Willie Nelson

3
Vince Black | 25 June 2010 - 10:07pm

Miss The Pig Tail

Watched Willie Nelson last night whilst changing my first nappy for my nephew. It was a rough and ready set, but had a certain charm as the beat went all over the place. I presume his guitar has woodworm.

0
David Wright | 26 June 2010 - 8:25am

Can I ask you all to

watch Muse tomorrow with your preconception button set at zero. On record I agree they are hard work, live they are a force of nature that have to be seen to be truly appreciated. That is all.

1
Dave Amitri | 25 June 2010 - 10:00pm

muse

my mates band are supporting them later in the year - they havent got an inflatable ufo to wow the crowd, just a bass player with suspiciously long hair!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 10:04pm

Level

42?

0
Dave Amitri | 25 June 2010 - 10:11pm

are you not mark king?

ah he wishes he had a million pound thumb! they are called pulled apart by horses and strangely enough are in bbc introducing stage tomorrow at Glasto - jammy gits, didnt even get me in the guest list!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 10:19pm

Absolutely second that.

They are preposterous laser-zapping UFO-summoning technicolour festival perfection.

0
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 10:05pm

Muse

are wonderful live, don't interact with the audience, but they put on a great show

1
David Sutherland | 25 June 2010 - 10:46pm

Willie is a proper legend...

a Hank Williams muddley... now that's the stuff.
I feel all mellow and summery, like.

Drink has not been taken.

0
Adman | 25 June 2010 - 10:01pm

Evening all

First impressions
* That nice Mr Dogg, you know the pimp from down the street, he likes a good wave, doesn't he?
* That reporter out interviewing the 'mad people'makes Rufus Hound look like John Simpson or Jeremy Bowen in comparison.
* Willie Nelson's band is now like one that plays in GAA social clubs on Sunday nights across Ireland. Any minute now stern Margaret from behind the bar is going to ask him to do the raffle and he'll have to finish off with 'We're All Part of Jackie's Army' - cos it's World Cup, like.
* Could this not just be done without any presenters, at all.

0
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 10:04pm

bbc presenters

i live in hope each year the bbc will be brave and ditch the banal presenters mate - maybe not in my lifetime, but hopefully for the sake of our childrens future!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 10:07pm

What's brown and rhymes

with Snoop?..................Dr Dre

Just an announcer would do "Now it's......." announcer fucks off job done.

0
Dave Amitri | 25 June 2010 - 10:10pm

?

What do you call that song Gorillaz have just done with Snoop?
Something to do with a beach, I think.

0
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 10:14pm

I think they opened with

"Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach" from the new album.

I was there, the first hour was a bit patchy but the second was good. We kept thinking about going to watch someone else, but were glad we didn't when Lou Reed turned up!

0
kidpresentable | 28 June 2010 - 7:59pm

gorillaz

aah at last proper quality - saw these live in manchester a few years ago when they did a 5 day residency, brilliant then and now unsurpassed! you dont get any better than having two ex-clash members in your band!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 10:15pm

No ex-Clash guys in your band?

...

0
Glenbervie | 26 June 2010 - 10:36pm

Gorillaz

stunning, just stunning, I'm logging off to watch it properly.

0
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 10:18pm

gorillaz

they are indeed Joe - is there nothin mr albarn cant do - i even saw his monkey opera in Manc two years ago and that was incredible too - met him afterwards as part of a PR thing and he's everything a passionate musician should be!

0
über-über | 25 June 2010 - 10:23pm

Just caught this on iPlayer

They are right on the money and they look like they are having an absolute ball.

Appetite well and truly whetted for their O2 show in September!

0
GunsOfBrixton | 26 June 2010 - 2:43pm

I just don't get Gorillaz

Overblown, tedious self-indulgent twaddle. I'd ask Albarn to stop it if i didn't think he'd bring bloody Blur back again. And people say Bono is a twat...

7
count jim moriarty | 26 June 2010 - 3:17pm

Simonon

is still the coolest fucker around

4
Pat Carty | 25 June 2010 - 10:24pm

And Jones

is one of the best rhythm players out there too. Saw him with Carbon Silicon and he was by far the best bit. Admittedly it was in the early days.

0
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 10:30pm

Already Have

my tickets for the O2 Dublin in September. Already seen Albarn with Blur and The Good, The Bad and the Queen. He's the David Bowie de nos jours (yes, I've had a few drinks, what of it?)

1
Pat Carty | 25 June 2010 - 10:38pm

Cooler

than Womack?

0
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 11:07pm

Score Draw

I'd say

0
Pat Carty | 25 June 2010 - 11:15pm

Amen!

Photobucket

0
James Blast | 26 June 2010 - 4:41pm

I think I may be having...

a homosexual moment.

5
Patrick Crowther | 26 June 2010 - 6:55pm

Oh I've

been gay for him since the last century, have Karma Timeout

0
James Blast | 26 June 2010 - 7:07pm

I had a dream

...once which featured a collection of women like the Gorillaz string section.
I'll leave it there.

1
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 10:27pm

Mick Jones seems to be enjoying himself

but Ican't hear a thing he is playing!

0
Lunaman | 25 June 2010 - 10:27pm

Was he actually plugged in?

Thought his guitar was a prop to play 'being half of the Clash'.

0
Remote Control | 26 June 2010 - 8:34am

Clash Of Sound

Totaly agree, I heard a bit of his guitar on one track but was he miming! Paul's bass was too quiet.

0
David Wright | 26 June 2010 - 8:28am

Gorillaz? Crikey...

am I the only one around these parts who thought they were a huge crock of shite?

3
eddie g | 26 June 2010 - 10:48am

No

the BBC says they 'struggled to ignite the crowd'.

1
badartdog | 26 June 2010 - 5:05pm

and when did a big video screen

become a multi-media experience?

0
Jon Whitney | 26 June 2010 - 9:51pm

No you're not the only one, eddieg...

See my previous post above.

0
count jim moriarty | 27 June 2010 - 11:34am

Shit

Have I missed much?

I've been catching up with Steve Winwood on Sky +.

Very, very good.

0
Iainso | 25 June 2010 - 10:32pm

When

are U2 on again?

0
DogFacedBoy | 25 June 2010 - 10:40pm

Viva Gorillaz

It is a ridiculously ambitious and esoteric a project as is ever likely to get such. mainstream approval.
First thing me and the nine-year-old daughter have agreed on. A great moment.

3
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 10:40pm

Question

Is Damon Albarn the first person to headline Glastonbury two years in a row?

0
Tom | 26 June 2010 - 8:02pm
stimpy | 26 June 2010 - 9:16pm

Or indeed...

...QUINTESSENCE in 1970 & '71... immortalised on film both times too...

0
Colin H | 27 June 2010 - 1:21am

First person in two different bands

to headline.

0
Adman | 27 June 2010 - 9:07am

Snoop was there

earlier but he didn't stick around to sing his song with Gorillaz.

Muthafucka

BTW can't the BBC show us anything in large chunks, why do we have to go back n forth every half an hour like (insert own joke)

0
DogFacedBoy | 25 June 2010 - 10:48pm

No, he did come on stage with them.

I was there, he sang "Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach" and did some rapping on "Feel God Inc.". He may have only been a sample for the first one (I could only see screens and they showed a video of him) but he was definately there in person on the latter.

0
kidpresentable | 28 June 2010 - 8:05pm

crowd

They don't seem to be going down too well. Crowd seems quiter between songs than it was for REM a few years back.

Clever project, not enough big tunes?

1
Jon Whitney | 25 June 2010 - 10:47pm

Would've helped HUGELY

if Damon had TALKED to the audience between songs. He was in good singing voice but there was far too little audience engagement.

Florence may bay like a tonedeaf heifer but she communicates with the crowd and includes them. Where Gorillaz felt like they coulda been playing the Barbican while being filmed for the South Bank Show, Flo was FUN. She had people jumping into the air with her. Whatever her am dram shortcomings, she and her band are a great outdoor festival turn.

2
Remote Control | 26 June 2010 - 9:43am

sorry

double post

0
Remote Control | 26 June 2010 - 9:44am

i found it strangely uninvolving

We were stood a lot further back than normal. Sound was ok. Visuals impressive. But it was strangely empty - lacking heart and soul - too clinical.

We bailed after an hour and went and had a cup of tea and some almond cake and listened to a nice duo - alt country very pleasant.

1
Mr Sparks | 26 June 2010 - 9:46am

Snoop

had to get off to look after his 'bitches'.
He has two running at Walthamstow tomorrow night

1
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 10:48pm

They should win

It's been closed for 2 years

0
clarker | 28 June 2010 - 1:22pm

Crickey, I must be getting young...

I enjoyed Snoop and love Gorrilaz.

2
Mark JF | 25 June 2010 - 10:54pm

I'm watching

The Sisters Of Mercy live at The Royal Albert Hall, I can't be doing with all this hand inna air waving, flat songstrel, cartoony band, old folky, vampire weakness, groovey convoy, Edith Bowlegs nonsense.
The Sisters, now that's proper music son, you can hear the words (just) and they had long hair but weren't simpering nancy boys.

Harrump!

yes, I'm on the vino again

2
James Blast | 25 June 2010 - 11:06pm

Sky Arts are having their

'Sofa Festival' weekend with heritage acts and the contents of DVDs you bought last year

Ah, This Is A Lowe, Zane to be precise. fuck off, you gimp, night night

Shaun Ryder: "This one's for Frank Sidebottom, he's up there"

You know he is, he really is

0
DogFacedBoy | 25 June 2010 - 11:16pm

Gorrilaz

Never seen the attraction.

I liked the Clint Eastwood single but apart from that I dont see the attraction.

0
Uncle Wheaty | 25 June 2010 - 11:15pm

Dare

My favourite Gorillaz tune they really are ripping it up

0
MrRadio | 25 June 2010 - 11:17pm

That's just class

MES tears it up. Biggest crowd he's ever appeared in front of, surely?

0
Grant | 25 June 2010 - 11:20pm

Gorillaz seem to have been joined on stage...

by a fat bloke and now the shouty bloke at the bus shelter. And to think we've still got Lou Reed to look forward to apparently...

0
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 11:21pm

Uncertainty abounds

Damon's just given the drummer the eyes for missing the klaxon, Simonon's looking for bass cues and Jonesy's amp's been turned up for no apparent reason. That's what you get for inviting Hurricane Higgins on to sing with you.
And now Lou Reed's come on in pedal pushers...

0
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 11:23pm

If only Hurriane Higgins

looked as healthy as MES

0
DogFacedBoy | 25 June 2010 - 11:37pm

oh dear

3
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 11:43pm

I will always remember Higgins as...

the devilishly handsome genius of 1982. His body may be broken but his spirit will never die.

1
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 11:47pm

I did a proper cry

Jimmy White's Hair

that is all

0

0

Gorillaz are everything good

Gorillaz are everything good about the modern world - inclusive, funny, slightly shambling, absurd mix of styles and attitudes. Proper world music. A glorious riot of good humour. And even Mark E Smith, is there no-one Damon can't fit in? Oh my god, it's Uncle Lou

4
ian | 25 June 2010 - 11:23pm

Here's Lou Reed's Spitting Image puppet from 1988

oh ffs just try make an effort and SING for once, Lou

his bottom set appear to be giving him gyp.

worst jacket of the day, too

1
el hombre malo | 25 June 2010 - 11:27pm

I didn't notice the jacket

I was transfixed by THOSE SHORTS! Does Laurie let him out of the house like that, or did he mug a pre-teen skateboarder for them?

0
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 11:31pm

Lou Reed

fuck off you talentless git

1
Pat Carty | 25 June 2010 - 11:25pm

Could you retype that...

and add 'Mark E Smith' and change 'git' to 'gits'?

0
Patrick Crowther | 25 June 2010 - 11:28pm

Much evidence for the prosecution

I'll admit.
But 'Songs For Drella' (his collaboration with John Cale about the life and death of Warhol) came up on the iPod earlier and I listened to the whole thing absolutely spellbound. He's had his moments. Last night clearly wasn't one of them.

0
Adman | 26 June 2010 - 8:53pm

A world of contrasts..

MES shambles on stage, lyrics in hand, shouts a bit, fiddles with an amp then buggers off.
Lou Reed comes on with roadie to help him set up his guitar, then tunes up and allows the band to start the next song.
Shit, now he's playing..what's going on?

0
Grant | 25 June 2010 - 11:26pm

Where;s me washboard?

have you seen it Lou?

0
DogFacedBoy | 25 June 2010 - 11:26pm

Lou Reeds

Guitar playing is so up it's arse at times - that's all!

0
Lunaman | 25 June 2010 - 11:27pm

Dog's bollix

Shouldn't Lou have been in the canine field doing his opera for dogs with his FPO, the boul Laurie? At least we wouldn't have heard it.

0
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 11:32pm

Groove Armada

GA have been brilliant on the other side and with a modern Kate Bush type for Mr Crowther, too.

0
PaddyH | 25 June 2010 - 11:35pm

aka Basement Jaxx for people who prefer car adverts to dancing

I thought that gothy stuff they were doing was horrific! Sub-Florence (is that possible) designed-by-focus-group "oh apparently 'kooky' is cool now" gubbins with, oh irony of irony, no groove whatsoever.

0
Joe Muggs | 25 June 2010 - 11:41pm

The after show party for Gorrilaz

will be like a really shocking 'Come dine with me'!!

3
Lunaman | 25 June 2010 - 11:35pm

I can only imagine....

Lou Reed: "The guitar solo I played tonight was an homage to Shostakovich."

Mark E. Smith: "BAAABBBUUURRRGHH! RRRAAARRUUUGGHH!"

Shaun Ryder: "You're twisting my melon, Lou. It sounded like an homage to shite."

Well, thanks for confirming that

I really did see Jones and Simenon (spelling? carnt be arsed to google...) on the same stage.
Gorillaz... excellent. Less bombastic than my beloved U2, and more post-modern (and less post-post-modern...)

Splendid, and just a little bit amaaaazing...

1
Adman | 25 June 2010 - 11:48pm

Oooh

crowd have woken up now they are playing one they know

2
DogFacedBoy | 25 June 2010 - 11:52pm

It really did dip there

sad, as if they'd gone straight from Lou Reed to 'Feel Good Inc' that set would've been legendary... As it was it was amazing, but almost fell to bits and didn't quite end with the bang it should have.

1

I wish they'd bloody hurry up...

it's Budgie on next.

1
PaddyH | 26 June 2010 - 12:23am

there's something very cool

when a new band play a hit at Glastonbury. You can feel the audience/band vibe.

0
Lunaman | 26 June 2010 - 12:30am

If you mix

The Clash's 'Stand By Me' with Paul Simon's 'You Can Call Me Al' you get the unintentional mash-up that is Vampire Weekend's 'Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa'.

2
PaddyH | 26 June 2010 - 12:41am

What's the best thing on TV at the minute?

The answer of course is Bowie doing 'Heroes' on the Glasto doc on BBC4.
Massive Cuban heels and silly hair too.

0
PaddyH | 26 June 2010 - 12:49am

Can we just pre-empt the next few posts with...

... some of you dislike Jo Whiley hugely, others, like me, quite like her and she hasn't got to where she has simply because her husband was in music PR.
At least she clearly loves music and the worst that you can say about her is that she is (professionally) overly enthusiastic about stuff we don't like.

2
PaddyH | 26 June 2010 - 12:54am

"At least she clearly loves music"

Our dinner lady at school was rude, stupid, uninvolved and probably unhygenic... but at least she clearly loved food (juding by the baked bean stains down her front).

2
Joe Muggs | 26 June 2010 - 10:59am

But the lady in your analogy

clearly *doesn't* love food, or indeed any aspect of her job.

Just looking at Kele from Bloc Party doing his new electro thing, I can't help but think the teenage goths may have to look for something new soon - the man looked like the shackles of new goth had been lifted.

0
Johan | 26 June 2010 - 9:08am

Missed it

Radiohead's Thom Yorke surprised fans with a set at the Glastonbury Festival, but stand-in headliners Gorillaz struggled to impress the crowd.

Yorke and bandmate Jonny Greenwood played on the relatively small Park stage, which normally hosts new bands.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8764349.stm

Went to bed before all the not-so-special guests appeared. Wise move. If they keep chopping & changing channels mid-set I will be expecting Muse to be shown on ITV4 tonight.

0
Beany | 26 June 2010 - 9:45am

Who does Thom Yorke think he is? John bloody McEnroe?

Mark Knopfler?

He was wearing a headband! Nooo!

0
Pencilsqueezer | 26 June 2010 - 2:19pm

Sky+ was indeed my friend

I have now spun through the rest of the show - I enjoyed Mariachi el Bronx and The Black Keys as well.

I can see the point made above about Florence working for the crowd there - I agree that worked well, and I thought her stagecraft last year was excellent (climbing a tall lighting rig in pixie boots, while singing). But the actual singing (this time especially) was not pleasant to my ears

0
el hombre malo | 26 June 2010 - 3:19pm

A friend made an excellent comparison of her voice

to Liam Gallagher's. It does the job, it cuts through everything else and makes sure that even the most cloth-eared, blind-drink or dunder-headed listener can hear it and can hear that it is her. It's very strong sonic branding.

They still sound like donkeys, though.

0
Joe Muggs | 26 June 2010 - 4:05pm

the beebs coverage

Never been to Glastonbury, but the TV coverage makes it look to be only three stages, and only showing a certain amount of acts(the website coverage is equally rubbish)

Good-Vampire Weekend/Hot Chip
Bad-Gorillaz/florence

0
junkiecosmonaut | 26 June 2010 - 3:27pm

what the BBC records at glastonbury

5 stages:
"At Glastonbury festival we are recording the Pyramid stage, Other stage, John Peel stage, West Holts stage and BBC Introducing stage. These stages offer the main headline acts from the festival and interesting newer artists."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/glastonbury/2010/faqs/

"website is equally rubbish" ...The website has (or will have when its finished) 170 hours of online video. At the moment apart from your Florence, Willie Nelson and Gorillaz it currently features clips and sets from Foals, Out Like A Lion, P Money, Meursault, Kid Adrift and Bombay Bicycle Club with obviously 2 more days to be recorded.

There's also rather good radio coverage but as i work for those lot then you obviously shouldn't be taking my word for it.

3
ChaileyJem | 26 June 2010 - 3:55pm

So you want the BBC...

... to cover every stage and every act? - but you've never been - maybe you should.

0

Are they on the BBC coverage at all ?

Let us know, please

0
el hombre malo | 26 June 2010 - 8:19pm

Well, as you asked...

...they'll be featured in interview on the BBC2 coverage sometime on Sunday (I'm guessing the late afternoon BBC2 slot)and - hopefully - there'll also be a little bit of film from their Saturday night [tonight's] gig at the Rabbit Hole stage. Hey, maybe even 'Notting Hill Gate'...

BBC Yorkshire's 'Inside Out' are filming at both their Glasto gigs (the other one being Sunday night at the Glade) for a short documentary to be broadcast oop north at some point. No doubt some scoundrel will -put it on youtube for the wider world to enjoy in due course... :-)

And... both sets are being professionally audio recorded for CD release.

You've got to fight for your right to be more than a footnote in rock history. And, hey, they're giving it their best shot...

0

I saw Editors live once, in 2007.

They were supporting Kaiser Chiefs, and Pigeon Detectives, The Cribs and The Twang were also on the bill. I had been taken along by a gentleman of my acquaintance who had previously given me a copy of The Fratellis first album as a gift. Beat that for a parade of landfill indie...

0

I can't watch until 10pm when the TV is free. May watch MUSE, not keen on their studio work, but live they are a different beast altogether.
Do hope Chris Rea will be making a guest appearance with them.

0

Jackson Browne... bastard!

Nobody has the right to look that good at that age!

0
Patrick Crowther | 26 June 2010 - 9:03pm

How does he do it?

Has he been more clean-living than his contemporaries? Or is it some sort of voodoo/ pact with the devil?

Jackson Browne on BBC4 now.

Jackson Browne is absolutely superb...

he really is.

0

Nope... they want dancing skyscrapers...

and they got 'em!

0
Patrick Crowther | 26 June 2010 - 10:39pm

The whole thing does

look predictably amazing, but they could probably do an hour long set of nothing but top 10 hits, and I can't help thinking that's what most of the crowd tonight were hoping for.

0

It's Neil Young 2009 all over again...

but I suppose the PSBs have the excuse that the current tour set is all that's programmed into Chris's laptop.

1
young dude | 26 June 2010 - 10:40pm

I've only really enjoyed Jackson Browne so far

He was a cut above.

Other than that IMHO it's been a parcel so far this year. Editors, The National, The XX - all pretentious arse gas. Florence Welch... jesus what a fucking horrendous noise.

Gorillaz. Either show the cartoon or play the songs. One or the other.

Scissors Sisters and Kylie. And...?

Dizzee and Snoop. A great vibe but I cannot figure out the lyrics at all. What are you saying? I'd love to know.

I hate being negative. It's all personal taste but things seem a little flat so far to me. It's only Saturday night but I've had my fill of downstroked guitars and twitching tortured lead singers already.

1
Beezer | 26 June 2010 - 10:43pm

Thanks for that.

Thought I was turning into Victor Meldrew, but I feel just the same. None of these acts mean much to me. And the ones that do, like say Willie Nelson, sounded pretty average.

0
Mr Fade | 26 June 2010 - 10:47pm

Hopefully

it's just an aberration.

I admit I'm a mid-40's grump but I do love being thrilled and/or royally entertained by the new.

A parcel of shite.

Does the fact that the minute a song

by any band is started the BBC has the title up on the screen not prove there is absolutely NO spontaneity in any of the acts at all? Are all the setlists handed in to teacher beforehand?

1
Mr Fade | 26 June 2010 - 10:56pm

Lets face it...

...if you were playing Glastonbury *and* being televised you'd probably write a set list in advance, wouldn't you? And if you don't hand one in afterwards, you won't get any PRS money, so best be prepared, I reckon. On the AC/DC website they announce any changes to the tour setlist in advance.

skirky | 26 June 2010 - 11:08pm

Yes I suppose so.

Just doesn't feel very rock and roll to me.

0
Mr Fade | 26 June 2010 - 11:09pm

It'd be nice to think

that up in the outside broadcast unit, poised over the captioning machine, there were a bunch of producers going "Which one is this, then?", "Are you sure?" calling their kids' mobiles and squinting at the back of CD covers though, wouldn't it?

4
skirky | 26 June 2010 - 11:24pm

Exactly!

Or even..."Now we're just gonna jam some stuff out and chuck in a covers medley"

Muse Vs. The National

Muse do nothing for me, I've tried, a mate who I trust is a huge fan. The National on the other hand sound good to me and I don't normally buy into this indie malarkey, if that's what it's still called. Fine album too.

This is damn fine booze and excellent weed by the way.

Pat Carty | 26 June 2010 - 10:56pm

Somewhere..

Midge Ure is looking for his drum pattern from Vienna..oh, here it is, Muse have nicked it

0
Grant | 26 June 2010 - 11:03pm

That's Not

all they've nicked

1
Pat Carty | 26 June 2010 - 11:10pm

Quite right

They've nicked Bob Holness's wall from Blockbuster aswell.

I hope they gamble and go for a Gold Run.

1
Beezer | 26 June 2010 - 11:15pm

Somewhere

Alan Price's paper bill has just been paid for the month.

0
skirky | 26 June 2010 - 11:42pm

I don't like Muse...

but they're bloody good at what they do.

2
Patrick Crowther | 26 June 2010 - 11:04pm

Are they throwing in extra intros to everything?

I'm sure I heard a whiff of "School", by the Hide In Your Shell Hitmakers there.

0
skirky | 27 June 2010 - 12:39am

A Headless Bass

and now a pipe. Hmmmm

0
Pat Carty | 26 June 2010 - 11:13pm

He should

join Lou Reed's band.

1
Grant | 26 June 2010 - 11:18pm

I'm really enjoying the Pet Shop Boys

despite a couple of sound drop-outs, it seems to be hit after hit, with theatrical staging. I should listen to them more often - great songs.

I tried Muse - headless bass, whiff of bombast, whiff of Queen. They didn't float my boat (but the crowd loved them)

1
el hombre malo | 26 June 2010 - 11:16pm

PSBs

were top notch for me.
Shoulda been on the Pyramid Stage getting the crowd dancing.

As the set went on I realised what a strong emotional attachment I have to pretty much all of their stuff.
I just love 'em.

I'll stick my neck out

and say that, in my opinion, "Being Boring" is probably the best pop song of the last 20 years.

0
GunsOfBrixton | 27 June 2010 - 1:12pm

I agree

Very poignant song, was very funny at Latitude last year when they played 'Being Boring' and a squad of ferile children at the front were 'moshing' to it.

We are not...

... A Muse-d.

0
ganglesprocket | 26 June 2010 - 11:29pm

When are UFO on?

1
Uncle Wheaty | 26 June 2010 - 11:42pm

They're headlining on Monday night...

Just after Rory Gallagher turns up in a battered Transit direct from a gig in Germany to do an ad hoc set.

0
stimpy | 28 June 2010 - 10:06am

(No subject)

0
Uncle Wheaty | 26 June 2010 - 11:43pm

Ooh, it's The Edge.

That's a nice touch from Muse.

1
Gauntlet | 26 June 2010 - 11:58pm

Eh up...

The Edge has shown up for a live karaoke version of a popular U2 hit with The Muse.
Bet you thought you'd never miss Bono's vox, eh?

0
Adman | 26 June 2010 - 11:59pm

If he'd thought this through, he could have turned up earlier

and played it with the PSB's.

0
stimpy | 28 June 2010 - 10:10am

Muse obviously taking my advice on this thread

got the Edge on and playing WTSHNN as well as House Of The Rising Sun. They're a bloody good covers band. Now if they'd only change their name....and finish with It's A Kind Of Magic. (Surely Freddie's their real 'muse' as it were?)

2
Mr Fade | 26 June 2010 - 11:59pm

Bet Edge would have been

pissed off if the battery on his delay pedal had gone flat.

He might have been forced to play the guitar.

1
Adman | 27 June 2010 - 12:04am

Bit like this?

(thanks to @bintytweeb on twitter for the reminder about this gag)

0
Gauntlet | 27 June 2010 - 12:05am

I Wondered

how long it would take that tired old comment to surface

0
Pat Carty | 27 June 2010 - 12:09am

It was a joke.

I love U2. They are absolutely my favourite band.

I was just wondering how Edge felt being a 'guest' rather than having his own impressive rig on hand.
That's all.

Sorry about the 'tired old comment'.

0
Adman | 27 June 2010 - 12:12am

Fair Enough

posted too quickly, I'm a bit over refreshed

0
Pat Carty | 27 June 2010 - 12:13am

I understand

that Mr. Edge makes pretty much the same joke in that film he done with Jack White and Jimmy Page.

0
skirky | 27 June 2010 - 12:36am

PSB's

Finish on Being Boring and then West end Girls, bloody brilliant actually, [and love the headgear].

1
stepheny | 27 June 2010 - 12:04am

A great set

0
Uncle Wheaty | 27 June 2010 - 12:06am

Wot no Florence?!?

?

1
Mr Fade | 27 June 2010 - 12:06am

I was out tonight

seeing They Might Be Giants - did I miss much? Apart from Dr Who
