Word Blog Meet Up - Glasgow Gathering in March
Posted by el hombre malo on 7 February 2010 - 7:02pm.

Do any of the Massive in the Glasgow area fancy meeting for a drink ?
I suggest Friday 12th March - and I also suggest Mono in King's Court as the venue.
It's a reasonable size of pub, has good beer, and serves vegan food.
And it's got one of Glasgow's best record shops, too! (Not sure how late monorail stays open, but I'll find out)
So - any thoughts ? Any other preferred venues ?

count
me and The Big Figure (Big Si) in
Good idea
That sounds like a good plan to me.
Sounds good to me too!
Excellent choice of venue as well.
Any chance of any of the Development-Hell-y Trinity (Mark / David / Fraser) turning up?
No chance from me, I'm afraid
It's one of my best friend's 40th that night. Thanks for the offer, though.
anyone else ?
So tempted.
I'm a London based Weedgie but up there often enough. Sadly I'll be in Poland on a stag night on the 12th....
Can't - playing that night....
But I'm on at The Ferry with Dexys Bootleg Runners on Saturday 6th March if any of you fancy coming?
Two sets (one Searching For The Young Soul Rebels era and one "hits") and a top Northern Soul DJ for a wee fiver.
Gaun - cannae beat that.
Mono is great...
would love to go and talk Sisters with James and Fleshtones with El Hombre...not beyond the realms but as I'm a southern softie it might be a bit difficult - put me down as a maybe.
SSJs
welcome, I'll even bring some prime TSOM 'rarities' for you
Mono is good..
But upstairs at the Doublet has a jukebox....
we don't want a fight
now, do we? :D
Calm down, calm down
I think the presence of a jukebox would generate 2 different kinds of tension -
1) "they've come all this way to spend the entire night selecting weird tunes without talking to anyone"
and
2) "call this a jukebox ? No "Hangman's Beautiful Daughter", no Irma Thomas, no Earl Hooker ..."
a question tae thi Rank Badjin
whit time's kick aff?
I plan to be there for 6
How does that suit?
I can do that
cab south of the river laters?
doubt any of us Weegies would want any truck with them arty farty hippiy types of the ISB, SAHB will be mair oor style - Faith Healer
6 should be OK
The only other thing we need is a secret password! Either that or carnations at the ready.
I'll be
the man in black ;D
That's going to narrow it down!
*inserts smiley*
Does that mean I can't wear black so we don't get confused ?
I'm sure we will be able to work out some kind of semaphore : I'll make sure the bar staff know we are on a secret meet.
Sounds good
last time I was in Mono was a poetry evening, so this should help the place redeem itself...
Would love to join you but
as I am currently (a) up to my oxters in nappies, (b) skint and (c) fairly rubbish at social gatherings I shall probably pass this time but hope youse all have a good one...
I've recruited two more
Rank Badjin (being a media type) will ken them: Keith M and Keith B, so we have 7 defs. with at least 5 mibbies aye, mibbies naws.
Twelve Pints, Four Kebabs and a Stabbing
sounds like a guid nicht oot tae me
Easy on the stereotypes there, big man
Or given the location should that be monotypes?
This clinched it for me...
*adopts Duncan Bannatyne voice* For that reason, I'm out.
Nah, only joking - er, kind of...
As I'm exiled 300 miles away and fairly skint I might struggle to attend but I'm sorely tempted. I'm not aware of the suggested venue I must admit but I know the general area, having lived in the sunny environs of the Saltmarket for a while. I'll leave it to resident weegies to suggest other potential venues - on my trips back home the only pub I tend to go to regularly is The Horseshoe but I accept this is too busy for a gathering such as this.
Ooooh this is tempting
I work about 10 minutes' walk away from Mono!
But now I'm suddenly feeling all self conscious and wondering if my real world persona can stand up to the social gymnastics involved in meeting seven or so music buffs...
Is there anyone else who's going who has never listened to Alex Harvey and would be happier just to talk about the Beatles all night??
Beatles you say?
they weren't half bad, were they?
So you've heard of them?
Phew. That makes two of us.
I've never really listened to SAHB seriously
Went to a gig a couple of years ago to see the Primevals support them - just about the only gig I've been to in the last decade where I felt like a youngster.
We won't bite
Please feel free to come along - despite the banter here, Mr Blast & I are pretty much house-trained.
@stephen
please don't 'get the fear' we're all just ordinary Joes (or Jocks, if you will), a coupla beers and we'll all settle down like we've ken'd each other for years. Trust me, I've been to many a meet with the folks of Heartland (not all goths, in fact very few) and you do pick up the story from where you left off - does that make sense?
I ken Big Si via Heartland, we'd never have bumped into each other sans it, we're solid mates now.
think of "Nothing but the good things" but if you talk Fab 4 I'm waaaaay outta the loop :D
Headcount so far
Just to keep me straight - here is the current state of play
Attending

stephenmerrick
Anyone else ?
If the people who are planning to attend (and anyone else who wants to come along) send me an email via the contact page, I'll do my best to make sure we all meet up successfully
ye ken
I do a bit of that graphic design lark, just to pay the bills mate.
I could do us something Wordish, a sign proclaiming "FREE BEARDS AND SPECS".
whaddya think?
A sandwich board ? A flag ? A collection of false beards ?
It is possible that without any hints we will gravitate together - " oh there's another bloke who looks like he's got far too many records, I'll go over and mutter the password Vambo rools ok to see if he's one of us ".
All help welcome
anyone need any Sisters' CDs?
;D
Genesis... Van der Graaf... The Pink Floyd...
The Mum makes ace carrot cake?
:(
I could use some pointers...
...on where to get started with Van der Graaf, actually!
are mp3s okay?
I have a disc stuffed with classic era VdGG that one of my Dutch/Belgian friends sent me. I have the first CD of Present (the album from the second comeback) which is really excellent and a decent boot of the Glasgow gig from the ABC (03 or 06, can't remember). I'll get something together, ne'er fear.
If you're anything like me 'tho, I find if someone gives you a whole lump of an artist's output, it's just too much to cope with. I can never make an uninformed cherry pick so very often the discs lie unplayed. Now, if they had given me one or two albums, I'd be fine there.
just me?
No, not just you
Some people think they are doing you a favour - "here's everything!!" I'd rather be pointed at someone's favourite album by a band or one cd best-of
Phew!
and thankee
how's Birmingham?
very kind of you, Mr Blast
I do find if i get a whole load of stuff at once, the first disc gets well played but the rest gather dust. I'll trust your judgement!
Bump!
Just a wee reminder that it's a week on Friday for all interested parties
Och naw!
I was planning on coming along on the 12th but unfortunately I cannae make it now. Very sorry about this because I was getting kind of excited at the prospect of seeing some of you lot.
Ach well, if it goes brilliantly then you'll be doing it again and I can trolley along then, and in the unlikely event that it goes badly then I'll be glad I couldn't come. Crivvens!
Yup, still coming
See youse next Friday @ 6
Sorry but my maybe is now a no...
due to the extremely non-rocknroll excuse - I can't get the time off work...anyway, have a great time! I shall wear my Bruce tartan kilt listen to Teenage Fanclub and raise a glass of my favourite Highland Park in your honour!
We appreciate the thought !
Of course we will all ne in kilts, drinking whisky too
I'll be in
the black kilt with matching cocktail dress
Damn!
I might throw a sickie off work now...!
"The Modern Kilt"
A pal (I think that's vague enough) got married in what he described as "A Modern Kilt". It is grey tweed, cut like a kilt, with matching waistcoat and jacket.
When he showed us the wedding pictures, some of us (me, especially) were really struggling not to blurt out "MISS MARPLE!".
Married in a plain tweed skirt.
next up
Has to be east Scotland gathering I hear that there Dundee is ace for a night on the Salvador
word-blindness
For some reason, I read the name under that as "Hoots McCann". Aye, it's a braw bricht moonlicht nicht.
just an update to say
I won't be there...
until about 7pm, my lift can't make it any earlier
looking forward, any last calls for music, books etc?
I'm still planning to be there at 6
As Mr Blast is providing flags and banners, I'll make sure the bar staff know where I'm sitting, and I'll be wearing a red shirt,
I should be there at 6 too
unless there's a wardrobe malfunction I'll be in a Throbbing Gristle t-shirt.
Hope it goes well
Be sure to take pictures.
still hopeful
I'll try to be there about 6.30, which probably means 7.00. Looking forward to it, but owrried about clothes as coming straight from work.
it'll be fine!
looking forward to meeting up with everyone
about 6.30 for me too
looking forward to it.
And they're off!
Defying national stereotypes, Douglas_green has joined me, both 15 minutes early. We are at the table on the right as you come in
We have tweeted the news internationally
Have a good evening.
Ya bassa Badgin!
I wanted to post "Gentlemen Start Your Beards"

Have a brilliant night gents
I really hope I can make the next one.
t'Was wonderful
but we kinda knew that.
Nice turn out of top chaps (from the left... pics are forthcoming, drink has been taken, cables have been mislaid) Stuart, Graham, Tom, Douglas, Blast!, Keith M and The Big Figure.
Big upset of the night was when I poured what I thought was an half bottle of Sam Smith's Wheat Bier into my remaining pint of same only to find out it was some 'orrible 'organic cider.
It was Douglas' fault for leaving too early.
I predict more afternoons, evenings & nights of similar gatherings.
thanks guys
Blast!
yes, a joyous evening
Soon I will publish the highlights of the daft discussions [without identifying who it was when we went round the table and asked "first gig?" and responded "The Wombles"]
Congrats on a good evening
Slowly, but surely, the virus spreads nationwide. Looking forward to seeing the pics!
What a hoot
I had great fun, and I hope the rest of the crew did too. We blethered about music, mainly - first gigs, favourite bands ever, Eno & Roxy, Bowie's Scary Monsters, Belle & Sebastian (pro & con), the gradual reduction in Glasgow record shops, the great record shops Glasgow used to have, how rotten the sound quality is on Velvets Live 69 CD release and how great Blood & Fire is - "The Mark Of Quality". Mad Men was mentioned, as was the secret of headphone wrapping, which several of the attendees do using a method learned here.
First gigs -
New Order
Aerosmith
Inspiral Carpets
Orange Juice
SAHB (supported by Mott)
Gary Numan
The Mission
Favourite gig at King Tut's -
Eels
Disposable Heroes of Hip-hopricy
Julian Cope
Ruby
El Vez
Bob Log III
Laibach
Thank you all for coming along, and thanks to Mr Blast for the cut-out and keep fake wigs for us all.
Beard count - 2 full, 1 soul patch, 1 Fu Manchu, 3 clean-shaven.
Another date later in the year ?
Excellent night guys!
Let's make sure the next one is sooner rather than later!
Graham - see link re Father Brian Eno: I tried searching on YouTube but Channel 4 have removed the rights to show it there.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0578509/
James - I'll see if I can dig out any Sisters memorabilia to share next time.
Si - I'll definitely check out Earth, on your recommendation.
Stuart - if you haven't heard Richard Cheese's version of "Creep" it's well worth it!
Keith - your secret is safe with us (sort of)!
And Tom - many thanks for organising this - I'd be happy with mono again for the next time, as it covers a lot of bases at once, but I'll see if anywhere else also fits the bill.
See you soon guys!
A great night
I have a cut-out beard and some Van der graaf cds as mementos. Feeling a bit fuzzy today, mind.
Cheers to el hombre malo for organising.
Actually I am very jealous
Posted about a potential night out in Birmingham and the response was underwhelming despite the prospect of Hombre being in attendance. If you have another date set I am coming up to Glasgae - the welcome is always better up there anyway!!
Did anyone have deep fried Mars bars for afters?
Ye'll be most welcome man
I had to split early as I'm nursing a very heavy cold and my lift home was leaving at 11, I believe it staggered on till 1am where upon foodstuffs of the deep fried variety may have been consumed [citation needed].
I'm in the process of digging out that NIN/Bowie soundboard and Coil~Hellraiser, was there anything else chaps?
BTW. Douglas can I swap your two Sisters gig memories for my two PTVs? :D
first document and eyewitness in:

(l-r) Douglas, Rank Badgin, Graham, Stuart, Blast! Soul Patch and Full Beard#2 out of shot
Big Si discusses... eh... errm... probably the sludgecore band Earth with Douglas
I'm looking forward to the next one already
T’was indeed a really good evening, thank you all.
And Douglas, thank you for the father Eno update – youtube (as you say) failed me completely on that one.
My head was suffering a bit today and I suspect my wallet will be suffering with all the recommendations that were flying around. Now where will start …
Nichts oot are damn expensive these days
I too have a very light wallet and I was a part timer last night, anyway here's the full line up

standing Keith M and Rank, Graham, Stuart, Blast! (with Devil Horns), Douglas, Big Eat thi Bried
"See the wreckage and the damage done"
Thanks for the Roxy
Senora Malo was pleased, and I'll be giving it a listen too!
and you for
The Pompadours (I lasted 7:30 LOL) and the Maximum Malo Brudders CDs
I'm a bit under the weather today but that has mair tae do wi this damn cold than any excess last nicht.
We must meet again real soon and I predict a Weegie Word Blast!-B-Q as the weather improves.
PS. check yer mail Douglas and Graham
Late again!
Apologies for this very late posting, i've been very busy with work and studying this week.
It was great to meet you all last friday and I do hope that we get to do it again. "Puir bluidy brilliant" is the best way I can describe the night.
Oh, and cheers for the Pompadours CD!
