Got a £15 iTunes voucher for my birthday

Any suggestions? Thinking of Death Cab For Cutie Narrow Stairs and getting pressure to download Kings Of Leon. Sometimes there is too much choice.

If you have £7.99 to spare

Try 'The Big Adventure' by The Dawn Chorus, which was my find of 2008. Wonderful Americana from a bunch of school teachers in Portsmouth. Bizarre but true. I've booked them to play my local (Cambridge) pub in March.

Sounds good

but will download on eMusic. My bigest problem with iTunes is that I'm finding most of what I like on eMusic nowadays. I never quite know what mainstream albums to buy.

Death Cab

is well worth having. I personally enjoy Kings of Leon more on single than album length.
Given your love of Mark Hollis/Talk Talk I would recommend 'Rook' by Shearwater. It's not obviously similar to either, but as with Elbow they are clearly a big influence. You can stream them at Spotify. I would start with the track 'Home Life'.
Other suggestions are, the aforementioned Elbow, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, TV on The Radio (which may just be the best of them all) & The Week That Was is also a cracker.
Happy hunting.

Shearwater sounds great

but will get when my eMusic sub refreshes in Feb. Thanks for the tip.

Amazon

My suggestion is to tell the present giver that Amazon vouchers go much further!

Tap in the name of your favourite songwriter

In the "power search", in the "author" bit, press go and choose some cover versions. I appreciate i-tunes not always great at acknowledging authorship, but I have had useful searches with names such as Dylan, Thompson, Young, Costello, Cohen. You can often turn up a rarity from an obscure film soundtrack or some such. £15 is too awkward an amount to splurge on 1 1/2 whole LPs.
