Gillian Welch is finally back

Ola Claesson's picture

Eight(!) years after Soul Journey Gillian and David Rawlings are finally back with The Harrow & The Harvest. Released today in America, not sure about GB. And it´s definitely a keeper. Ah, the harmonies. If you´re a Spotify kind of person it´s yours to enjoy right now.

she made an interesting comment in an interview

broadcast in melb last weekend.

claimed she was no longer willing to try out new songs in performance before she recorded them as someone would have their phone out and they would be on the web the next day which she found unsettling as she may not want to stay with that version.

Course bootlegging has a long tradition but she contended that the immediacy and omnipresence (my terms) of iphone and youtube were now quote "interfering with the creative process" unquote

For some reason

mine arrived on Monday. I ordered it from her website. It's a return to the first 3 albums and is magnificent.

It's been a long, long time.

Let us rejoice.
The reviews have been uniformly 5-star.
can't wait.
Never really took to her last album(Soul Journey) all those years ago.

First time I came across her and david rawlings was on a Jools special from Nashville. They did as far as I remember2 songs on the stage of the Grand Old Oprey - The hairs stood on the back of my neck. Rarely does music hit me like that, and her 1st 3 albums affirmed 1st impressions.
Saw them one night in the Rugby club in as far as i remember, Nenagh Co. Tipperary, while the Rugby boys trained outside. A memorable night.
I got the David Rawlings Machine album and while very good not in the same league.
Mind you I have on occasion put Method Acting/Cortez on continuous play, I think it's a classic track.

Can't wait for the real thing.

Hurray!

Mine arrived this morning, but will have to wait until tonight to hear it. Good reports all round, reviews and word of mouth so can't wait.

Dropped...

...through the letterbox this morning, and I'm working from home today (how lucky is that!). First listen would suggest that it's up there with "Time, The Revelator".

Listening to it for the first time as I type...

and it sounds fabulous. On first hearing WAY better than Soul Journey, which is the only one of her records that I don't love unreservedly.

One of the greats, she really is...
