Germany's third goal

Merv's picture

Something has just occurred to me about this. I might be slightly misremembering, but when Lampard's free-kick hit the wall I am sure he immediately turned to the referee and appealed for something. Why? They didn't encroach and I am pretty sure it wasn't even close to handball. If he had instead focussed on the fact that England had lost possession and Germany were about to break with pace, maybe he would have tracked back and been able to help prevent the goal.

I'd like to think that there's a lesson there, but I bet it won't be learned.

You're right

He had his back to what was going on and lost an opportunity to nip the counter-attack in the bud.

Spot on

I saw that too but had forgotten.

the other thing

was that Terry was up for the free kick, when Lampard was clearly going to shoot

If it had been 2-2 at the time, I hope we would have been tighter in the second half

I just watched the highlights again

and Lampard does appeal, and in the end he gets pulled across and leaves Mueller open to score

But by far the worst thing about the 3rd goal is Johnson getting out of Schweinsteiger's way, when he had a perfect opportunity to shove him over and pickup a yellow card
