German sausage weekend
Posted by Johnny The Fox on 26 May 2011 - 11:13am.
Guten Morgen die massive! This weekend I will attending a party full of bier and sausages and have been given the responsibility of providing the nights audio delights - The theme, German connections.
Now, cooking for 10+ hungry Männer is a greater responsibility than picking out some tunes for the evening (or so I thopught). This is where I need your help. Beyond Kraftwerk and the Hoff‘ my mind draws a blank.
Any suggestions are welcome. I’m informed the Scorpions are German, so thats 2 bands on my list
Cheers

Die Toten Hosen
Kraut punks
A consignment of German sausage...
A Sausage Fest
Try Die Fantastichen Vier, German rap group with a sense of humour
I'm liking their track MFG.
I'm liking their track MFG. Great!
Kurt Weill
and Bertolt Brecht wrote some classic tunes, covered by the great and good.
Herbert Grönemeyer
is very big in the Fatherland; I guess you should include him in your playlist.
James Last? [runs for cover]
A few random thoughts
something from Bowie's Berlin albums
I'm in Love with a German Film Star - Passions
A Walk in the Black Forest - Herb Alpert
Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand/Sie Liebt Dich - HJHs
You have to have
some Can:
btw, this is Mushroom.
Cheers Big Jim Bob! Now we´re talking...
Oh and If you want to get a bit..... er relaxed
Try Rubycon by Tangerine Dream:
Try these for size
Get all volumes of this album, BTW
And I love this
Any Neue Deutsche Welle too:
And of course you can't do German without going down the schlager route. Great vid too:
German Sausage Weekend?
TMFTL, etc....
Der Mussolini
by DAF would get the evening off to a flying start.
Einsturzende Neubauten should help clear any lingerers at the end of the night.
On balance
You could argue Boney M are a German band
This lot are German, and just like Boney M
Warning: Insanely catchy tune contains steel drums
Familiar songs sung in German:
Bowie's Helden
HJH Geht Raus
German sausage parties...
...are the wurst.
Oh come on - someone had to.
Don't be
such a brat!
Oh and you definitely need
this Oktoberfest favourite:
Wow!
Some good ideas posted above. The Massive's knowledge of all things music never fail to impress me!
Berlin
Can we have German town names as well, I'm sure Berlin has been used
in a few songs.
I can only think of
Ich Habe Noch Einen Koffer In Berlin by Marlene Dietrich. Not exactly a party tune.
Although Viva Colonia is quite jolly:
Shlager-tastic
Mrs fridge lived in Cologne in the late 90s and we partied like mad people to this lot at Carnival - about as German as it gets...
http://www.hoehner.com/start/musik
More nonsense from the German Black Lace:
"Sind Sie allein...
... in Berlin?"
[EDIT: looked down, saw someone cleverer had got there first. Cried]
what about a group name?
Take my breath away by Berin (so sorry about this post)
Link Sausages
Johnny The Fox-if you have spotify, you could maybe create a playlist and post the link for the massive to enjoy.
Fools Garden are German
I've always liked this song, Lemon Tree.
(No audio on this computer but I'm assuming this works)
Teutonic for the troops
Trio - Da Da Da
Drowning in Berlin - The Mobiles
Anything at all by Propaganda and/or Claudia Brucken
and,
of course,
the magnificent...
99 Red Balloons
Udo Lindenberg
Germans, from the Max Headroom Show
I love the bit where he hits a tennis ball over the Berlin Wall
Queen
?
There must be
some oompah music somewhere you could use, failing that play the wonderful Lile Marlene at the end of the evening when everyone has had too much to drink and you'll all be weeping. Though it was sung by German soldiers during the last war, it's not a Nazi song and was infact sung by the British amongst others, even Vera Lynn did a version but stick to the original by Lale Andersen.
Achtung! German bands deserving of your attention.
CAN, AMON DUUL, EINSTURZENDER NEUBAU (apologies for the lack of 'umlauts')...and, though not exclusively German, THE UNITED JAZZ AND ROCK ENSEMBLE (aka..The Band of Bandleaders, because every musician led his own band also. Featured 3 Brits...Ian Carr, trumpet; Jon Hiseman, drums and Barbara Thompson, saxes). Also...for the top (though rather 'pop') East German band, around for at least 35 years...the PUHDYS).
Enjoy!
Mousse T..
just seen him mentioned on another thread, he's German too. One-hit wonder (?)with Horny.
And there was also Alphaville, 80s OHW with Big in Japan.
When everyone has arrived...
...and before they have eaten anything.
Ensure they all have food in hand and then play this to get proceedings underway:
Melodic German rock?
Bap.
Sausage and Bap, in fact.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bap_%28German_band%29
Hopefully
the weather will be nice so you must play Manuel Göttsching's E2-E4 that was the basis for laid-back house classic Sueno Latino
Having just thought of it
I decided to listen to it as it's been some years and my God it's fantastic. I will be digging out his albums when I get home.
I got lost in the whole ten minutes (and it's only a part of the suite) and didn't even pretend to be working when my boss walked in.
Lou Reed's Berlin
should make the party go with a swing.
Sounds like a great opportunity to
subject your guests to several hours of Kraut rock and don't forget the pommes mit mayo and the curry wurst. Curry sauce required is very easy to replicate - equal measures of curry powder and tomato ketchup mixed together. Splendid stuff
Doctor dead trousers will see you now
I think Die Aertze are a great band a lot of the time, the albums 13 and Gerausch being my favourites.
http://youtu.be/36_JGMGL0tM?t=27s
Also Die Toten Hosen
http://youtu.be/G3KPBRajN10
The Humpe Sisters
No, seriously. 'Swimming with Sharks' Or the Rainbirds. Then there's James Lsst, and Bert Kaempfert,of course, Falco (though he might be Austrian)and Horst Jankowski.
I'll second
Herbert Gronemeyer, particularly the Mensch album
and what about ex Pink Floyd tribute band, RWPL
Don't mention the war
If it's OK to be a bit rebellious then "Holidays In The Sun" is still a great single.
Otherwise you could try some tunes recorded at Hansa studios (normally with Giorgio Moroder's influence), that includes Sparks "No1 In Heaven" album.
Talking of Berlin
I heard yesterday that Joe Jackson is now living as woman there. He's known as Dale De Vere.
Now he can tell us
If it really *is* different for girls.
Neu shortage of suggestions
If you have Spotify then I've got a playlist of German artists here
http://open.spotify.com/user/skuds/playlist/0vTIXX8AsmQo5R6iFQhaLv
I see that a depressing number of tracks has become unavailable since I added them (Karl Bartos and Rammstein in particular) and the odd Austrian might have slipped on there.
My favourites not mentioned already are Neu!, Joachim Witt, Ideal, Tanzwut/Corvus Corax, Die Krupps and the very proggy Eloy.
Unfortunately the mighty United Balls and their 'hit' Pogo in Togo is not on Spotify.
For less industrial/metal and more mainstream music there is always Scooter or German rappers (!) Die Fantastischen Vier who were all over MTV about 20 years ago when it was still MTV Europe and worth watching because it was not wall-to-wall reality shows.
Cluster´s Zuckerzeit is really nice and relaxing
Try this...
and there's plenty more where that comes from.
(That's Ding from Seeed for those with no access to YouTube.)
Or this...
That's Guten Tag from Wir Sind Helden pop-pickers!
(if nothing else, this is short)
'Wurst n beer'
Wham!
"I'm Ger Man"

Roger Whittaker and Smokey
Both staggeringly popular in the manor Squire.
Also Schlage and Volksmusik as genres if you want a MOR vibe, though I would recommend giving both a wide birth.
Can Neu and Berlin Bowie (not that any of the albums were actually recorded in Berlin, I'm told)) would be my recommendations.
Heroes was recorded in Berlin
I have been in the room on the second floor where he did the vocals for the title track, since you´re asking.
Low was mixed in Berlin, I think.
Also popular on New Year's Eve
in German speaking parts of Europe.
Freddie Frinton in 'Dinner for One'
This is why during Eurovision this year one of the preenters said the phrase 'Same procedure as last year'
blimey
are they STILL showing that..
Oh yes
Oh yes. On multiple channels.
I was talking to someone from Denmark recently and she told me they get it as well.
Even Germans who don't speak English can quote whole lines from the thing.
Yup
In Sweden as well.
Every bloody year, all of my life.
( And Donald Duck every Christmas Eve... )
I'm not sure anyone's actually watching it anymore, but if they tried to replace it there would be a riot.
Tradition is the new religion...
Eloy.
Were popular in Germany.
Has no-one mentioned a bit of Senor Coconut yet?
Oh God I love Senor Coconut
Pic is of Zappa because its really a smooth latin Smoke On The Water in Spanish - oh just listen its fantastic
German pop! Apparently
This lot are German. This was on heavy rotation when I worked in Hamburg a few years ago. (**shudders**)
Weird video.....
Sausage music (now there's a genre)
Hugely recommend the really marvellous compilation Deutsche Elektronische Musik. A couple of old favs (but wonderful ones) and loads of discoveries, a really fantastic funky listen from start to finish.
Hope you get your hands on some kummelwurst, haven't had that since I used to be able to buy it straight from Milwaukee packed in dry ice.
I do admit
in my teenage punk phase I used to listen to quite a bit of Nina Hagen...
My favorite German guitar
My favorite German guitar band is Die Artze:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_%C3%84rzte
My favourite of the LPs is '13', from which the following song dissing obsessed fans is a cracking example:
For electronica, aside from the mighty PowerStation, head for Hardfloor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardfloor starting with Acperience 1...
A not very guilty pleasure
Well, I'm guilty of posting this one before....Nina Hagen's cover of White Punks On Dope, album version if you can find it. Here's a very late 70's/early 80's uncomfortable mix of glam hair/pants, retro moustache/guitar and punk. Still love it after all these years.
Heino!
Heino Heino Heino!
Nur Ein Wort
No idea where the inspiration for the video came from.
Juli was popular in Germany when I was living there around 5 years ago
and of course Xavier Naidoo / Sohne Mannheims
