Gentle Influence - Easy To Know

SimonL's picture

I've been listening to this a lot this weekend, to the point of obsession. Took a while to find it on YouTube because the uploader called it Easy To Love.

Anyway, it's a cracker from the 60s, the type of organ groove that Graham Day has made a career out of. Can anybody tell me anything about the band? I know they came from Oxford or thereabouts, but that's all.

Anyone?

Also, does anyone know of a good information resource (book or website) for this kind of mod/psych/garage stuff?

They were an English band

who had two late-60s singles on Pye, with an early prog sound if this cut is anything to go by. Think they've been comped on the "Rubble" series among others (this is from memory).

There's a fair bit of info around about the UK pop-psych era - you might want to start by putting some books by Terry Rawlings on yr Xmas list, especially this one:

and try a Google ssearch for "Shindig" and "Modculture", if you're feeling keen. Also this blog is worth a look for psych obscurities, although not updated often:

Is the ever-cheery Graham Day (of Prisoners etc) still grinding out those Small Faces riffs ? I bet he is.

thanks gents

I'm very familiar with the Modculture site, and a few bits of info ahve come my way. I've a couple of old Terry Rawlings books, but nothing that covers this era.

Graham Day is still doing it, better than ever some might say with his current band The Gaolers.

It's mostly info on the bands I'm after. I've hundreds (literally hundreds) of obscure 60s tracks that I've picked up on various compilations bought and taped by others. But no idea who these bands were. Unless the members of bands ended up in more successful outfits.

And as for The Action. Lovely. The only thing I think I've ever agreed with Phil Collins on is that they were brilliant!

try posting some of those band names here...

Lot of knowledgeable people around hereabouts. Also try the VeryGoodPlus vinyl junkies website.

A book called "Tapestry of Delights" was an attempt to categorise some of the late-60s British music scene, including some of the more obscure psych bands. Not sure how accurate it was but worth tracking down a cheap copy 2nd hand.
