Fruit & Nutcake

chrisf's picture

Went to see the Nutcracker last night. I do venture into the classical realm from time to time and this is always a favourite (especially at Christmas and now the kids are just about old enough to appreciate).

But.....

When it came to the "Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy", I found myself as always humming along with "everyones a fruit and nut cake.....".

Questions
i) For those over say 30's (I'm guessing here on trying to remember when this advert was) - is it possible to watch / listen to this piece of music without thinking of the Cadbury's chocolate advert?

ii) Any other examples of music (classical or pop) that are so ingrained in popular culture through adverts / TV / Movies etc etc that they have been "taken over" and its the ad / TV / movie that immediately comes to mind......

It used to be said ....

that a cultured person was someone who could hear the William Tell Overture without thinking of the Lone Ranger

Oh yes, can't hear "Ride of the Valkyries"

without seeing Robert Duvall in a chopper.

I tried to get a similar thread going a bit back

I bet when Dvorak wrote the New World Symphony...

He didn't have the cobbled streets of Ramsbottom in mind.

0
Paul Waring | 21 December 2008 - 9:33am

Isn't that

Gold Hill in Shaftesbury you're thinking of?

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 21 December 2008 - 11:11am

I'm sure you're right.

But Ramsbottom sounds Hovis-er.

My bane is the bloody Old Spice surf

conjured up by the strains of Orff's Carmina Burana.

Apocalypse Now

is only the second thing I think of when I hear the ride of the valkyries.

I find the lyric "Kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit" popping into my head instead.

Does this not remind you of the days when the BBC....

...couldn't get their timings right between programmes and instead of expensive idents would suddenly put on a cartoon. Its all very well having dedicated Cartoon Channels but a sudden burst of cartoon anarchy in the schedules would be welcome.
And whilst I'm thinking about old time telly where's the programmes featuring silent movies with witty commentarys that also was a staple of the time.

Yes! Wonderful times.

(Sombre BBC voice)
The BBC regrets that we are having some technical problems in bringing you coverage of the funeral of Lord Mountbatten.
We will be broadcasting pictures as soon as they are avaialble. In the meantime, alternative programmes will follow:

(boisterous Tom & Jerry theme tune - # yadadadaaa yadadadadaaa ...# a nation rejoices)

Coke at Christmas

Was this a pop song first or an ad? I know it was the New Seekers.

0
Beany | 21 December 2008 - 2:29pm

It was an ad.(Coke)

..so was "We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters (Bank)

shane pacey | 22 December 2008 - 2:02pm

Believe it or not

but I know the model who came out of the surf for the Old Spice ad, Vulpes.

Isn't this a cue for a

"What are they doing now?" revelation?

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 21 December 2008 - 3:51pm

Nimble

I Can't Let Maggie Go, and why should I? And Dvorjak's New World Hovis ad (eh up lad)? The bread makers seemed to corner the best songs at one time.

Bruised Mike | 21 December 2008 - 3:43pm

Not quite classical, but seasonal

I can't hear "Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly" without singing along about "tick-a-tick a Timex, tra-la-la".

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 22 December 2008 - 11:19am

Same tune, different advert...

This ran in Scotland for years;

"Money back at SSEB Fah- lah - lah- lah- Laaaah!- lah- lah- lah- lah!"

Over and over again, ad infinitum. SSEB were a shop like Comet. I still hear this in my head when Deck the halls comes on anywhere.
