From the Word Bloggers Beer Fest
Posted by Sid Williams on 23 January 2010 - 12:47am.
As everyone has either a) gone home to their loved ones and/or b) are having trouble hitting the on switch, let me be the first to thank all, especially Hannah and the organising committee for a fantastic evening at the Lamb tonight. I'm sure there will be others adding more detailed content, and I did see some cameras, so I'll leave it here for now. Suffice it to say that a good time was had by all, and there were a tidy few!

For those who could not attend
I ,like so many others ,hope you all had a great time .
There or not
I had a great night again. Thanks to all. I'm trying to keep a reference of names & nicknames to faces but it's all become a little fuzzy already. I thought I'd mention that although many of the massive couldn't attend many many of you were there in spirit. As you might imagine there were many recollections of favourite threads on the blog. Where else would you meet someone for the first time and be discussing 'Frey bentos pies'(thanks Richard Lowe) within a few minutes!(cheers Steve285 I hope you can make it from Norway for another)
Without the input of all the massive we would never of got together in the first place so thanks to everyone of you for another fine evening. I look forward to the next one.
I'd like to thank...
Those of you who bought me drinks. There were so many of you.
So very many.
*hic*
hic x2
hope you all had as good as night as me (midlake. fantastic) . Going to bed now
Hannah...
A belated 1:57am thank you for getting as many of us as possible together in the same room. I'm sorry that I neglected to say it to you in person.
Awww, you're welcome!
Glad it went well
Sounds like a splendid time was had by all. Wish I could have made it!
Great people, great night, great pub
Thanks Hannah and everyone else involved in organising tonight. I've done almost no posting, but I'm glad I went along tonight. Everyone was great, the vibe was just what you'd expect from the blog, and the pub didn't chuck us out at 11.10! All around, a great night!
And so say all of us.
I've hesitated about posting for the practical reason that I stood at the wrong busstop for nearly an hour and for the more lofty reason that I had the most wonderful evening and don't quite know how to express why...I suppose the key word is 'community'. Never have I seen such a disparate group of strangers talk to eachother unprompted as often only friends can. Seeing real friendships develop in 'Meatworld' must surely be the proof, if any were needed, that The Word is a true little community of good people who love what they love, wanna share it with others and have that most endearing of British national characteristics: a sense of fair play and good manners. ( I say this as an Irishman)I can't even begin to thank all the regular bloggers who turned up and turned out, every man jack and lady jane of them, to be as funny, interesting and well-informed as their postings had always suggested. I wish I could thank you all individually but I shan't for fear of leaving anyone out.
Finally, a huge shout to David and Fraser for turning up and being so genuinely friendly, frank and generous with their time. Word is still, unfortunately, a cottage industry; it prospers but deserves to thrive a bit more. I hope at some point it grows to rival its more well-distributed contemporaries and in the meantime I don't really care whether it's bound by staples, glue or squirrel phlegm> One of the things that was made clear to me tonight is that it's what's inside that counts...
Thank you all, thank you Hannah for making it happen.....the whole thing was the opposite of a disappointment.
Sounds like a great evening..
now I feel such a stupid ass inflicting my c'mon post on you. And I'm Irish too (Mn), touchy bastards!
Okay, all the best, Vorgongod.
Cheers Declan
....and I really hope you find the name of that song. If any massive members (ooer missus!)know their early seventies jazz rock, there's a brother who could really use your help. check out the Help, the second time thread.
Squirrel phlegm binding...
If I could be assured that the magazine would use this, I would renew my subscription for the next 40 years.
This sounds grand
I wonder if there is a large enough Northern branch of the Word Massive to warrant a similar event north of the Watford Gap?
I'm up for it
North-West Chapter?
Manchester or Liverpool?
Or both! Manc easier for me, by train. Notlob even easier ;-}
I should have been raising a toast to our southern brothers and sisters from the national Winter Ales Beer Fest in Manc this week 'cept I've been laid low by the lurgy and cannot mix pleasure with penicillin. Should be fine for next weekend's Bent & Bongs Beer Bash though. Anyone else going?
Word Massive in Manchester
Four of us from our work (two form a couple) would love to join some kind of Word Up - Lass o'Gowrie or Britons Protection?? How many would we have to guarantee to tempt DH or ME out of London Town?
Early evening in Mcr?
Bit nervous at the prospect (don't feel knowledgeable enough & I'm no Kate Winslet look-alike - now or ever!) but might be tempted by an early evening swift ginger beer before getting the train home...
Briton's Protection
I was drinking a warming Japanese whisky in there before a concert by the famous Irish pianist - Ryan "Coochie" Sack O'Moto.
Does not the sainted editor of this parish have a northern passport that allows him to venture up to the Radcliffe/Maconie show occasionally. In which case The Peveril Of The peak would be slighty nearer for him. Or bugger the old blighter and settle for The Moon Under Water on Deansgate, Manchester's largest hostelry and perfectly suited for a Massive meet.
I'm up for Manchester!
Will do any pub!
I'd recommend it
It was a very enjoyable night.
You know you've had a good time when you look at your watch and see that 4 hours have passed in the blink of an eye.
Thanks to all for a great night
Vorgongod says it all - I add my thanks and appreciation to everyone. It was a splendid evening which worked really well and it was good to meet so many nice people.
Thank you everyone
What a splendid bunch you all are. I was delighted to meet dlusher, specs_beard, Dr Pill, Lunaman, Retro Man, Hannah, The Underpant, David, Fraser, backward7, Twang, the mvps and, oh... absolutely everyone else.
What a team.
Thanks to Hannah whose organisational skills are better than mine. I left the pub and got lost immediately. You don't know where I've been, maaaan...
Also, I think I ought to change my username to Bargepole because you see, wait for it, I was the third person to arrive.
Here. Week. Veal.
Groan.
I hereby take back every compliment I have ever thrown your way. You desperately need new material!!!!
Seriously though, whilst I am intensely jealous, I'm glad you all had a good night. A glass was raised in Belfast (whilst listening to "Suppers Ready" of course!).
As far as I can recall
I cracked the third person gag in the presence of specs_beard. He held back his mirth with great skill.
I was impressed.
Clearly...
...I was unleashing the 'inner guffaw'!
Hear hear
Great night all round.
I think I was expecting a room full of Tommy Saxondales - not from postings necessarily, but from past (other) website forum hook-ups.
Anyway, it was lots of fun, great to put faces to (nick) names, get to see the strange things Fraser photographs at 11.30pm in his kitchen, rabbit on about everything under the sun and feel vaguely rock and roll when we got told to stop disturbing the neighbours.
Thanks Hannah and all for organising and turning up.
Thank you Hannah!
Can't believe I'm up at this hour, today of all days it's an early kick-off for the FA Cup...could do with another few hours in bed to de-fuzz my head!
Anyway, great night - time flew so quickly - shame I had to retreat to my provincial hole so early as I'm sure I didn't get to meet everybody - the impressive turn-out was probably another reason.
I'm definitely up for another one - be great to meet up again.
Oh, I hope the choice of The Lamb was a reasonable one.
Another vote of thanks to Hannah
It was great to meet so many of the Massive and be able to put faces to a few more names. There were a few of you that I didn't get around to speak to so hopefully next time.
On the subject of next one, I spoke to Hannah as she was leaving and for reasons that are no longer clear to me, we thought the first Friday after the Spring Solstice, which I see from the calendar would make it March 26th.
If we can get general ageement on that, mark it in your diary.
One more thing, well done to Twang for bringing along the Word flag that marked our territory.
Thanks from me
Yes a splendid night was had - great to meet everyone and get down and nerdy about Pigsix 4 etc. I finally learned how DH got to shake hands with Lowell George, and put Azeem straight on Gary Moore ;-)
Can't wait for the next one.
Azeem and Twangothan's...
...good natured debate regarding the merits of Gary Moore (and subsequently, restraint vs unfettered virtuosity in music) was the embodiment of the tone of this website.
Here people can be very passionate and articulate about something they either like or dislike, yet respectful of differing opinions.
Calm yourselves, ladies...
Hello
I've nothing new to add and would just like to echo what's already been said. Thanks to Hannah for organisation, and thanks to everyone who attended for a thoroughly enjoyable night.
No thanks to anyone who bought me a drink though. My head feels as if there are two bears wrestling inside it.
It was great to meet everyone and I'm already looking forward to the next one!
Like this?
Exactly like that
I'm off out for a fried breakfast asap
Thanks Hannah!
It was a lovely evening. Only disappointment? There were no Bearded Rick Parfitt lookalikes in faded Fairport Convention -t-shirts. Honestly.
It was great fun
Full marks to Hannah for organising and the rest of you for being, well, interesting. I had a ball and couldn't believe that my 3 hours passed so quickly. I learned many things and enjoyed myself immensely. To Backwards and Azeem - well done on the origami - I was seriously impressed.
And doesn't Alan Davies look like David Rothon?
Good work everyone...
...although my other half was rather bemused when I got home to tell her that Fraser's patented black pudding and foie gras burger (with caramelised apple) would be "just the thing" for a 1 am snack but sadly we didn't have any truffle oil in.
On a serious note, for once, the work that Development Hell do to take on the EMAPs of this world to produce the mag and everything else was illustrated by the amount of people who turned up. I hope that gives you guys a well-deserved boost
The whole evening was perfectly bound and I predict will soon become a staple event.
Recipe
I'll happily admit the foie gras/black pudding sandwich isn't my own idea - it's from Andrew Pern.
Mmmmm
Where's my blowtorch?
I have a blowtorch!
And I'm crazy for black pudding. Game on!
Here's my version
oh lordy
that looks utterly amazing and I'm trying not to gnaw my screen
Did you greet each other by your user names?
Or were there a series of introductions along the lines of "Hello, I'm ..... , but you can call me ....."?
Yes
We cheered when Captain Underpants introduced himself. It seemed like the right thing to do.
In my case...
... yes, definately.
So is there any pics
for us poor isolated Northern folks who missed out? We could at least have the vicarious fun of looking at photos of the pissed up peeps.
Thank yoooooo
for all your lovely comments.
I had a completely marvellous evening, and you are all thoroughly splendid. Haven't laughed so much in ages. We'll definitely do it again!
Another repetition ..
.. of above posts.
Had a really enjoyable evening - thanks Hannah for putting the effort in to make it happen.
Special mention to Retro Man who was the first to say hello when I arrived and immediately banished any apprehensions I had beforehand
As an aside for those who couldn't make it - I'm sorry to ruin any preconceptions, but there was a startling lack of beards on show !
Roll on the next one...
Would like to add my thanks, too
There can't be that many situations where you can walk into a room of 'strangers' and yet feel so welcome, and discover that you do, in fact, sort of know them.
Loved it. Hope there are many more. I still need to say hello to half the folk that were there!
where are
the 10 x 8s with the circles and the arrows?
Ale and origami
Backwards7 definitely wins the origami prize, as (1) he used a tiny piece of paper and managed to make a beautiful bird out of it and (2) unlike me, he didn't get stuck halfway through and have to rack his brains for ten minutes trying to remember the next bit.
As I was cycling, I took very few ales - Ganglesprocket was understandably unimpressed by this cowardly abstemiousness - then again he is a Glaswegian... I enjoyed his tale of the planeload of Glaswegians heading all the way down to Bournemouth (Bournemouth?) to witness a dire concert by Sly and The Family Stone.
Thanks Hannah for organising it. I'll get you to do the live randomiser next time. And I can't remember who it was who said "I would do the randomiser, but I've only got four songs on my ipod" - that's still making me chuckle.
And it was good to discover that both Carl Parker and I hold a Rock 'n' Roll A-level - although I should disclose that in my case it was a third re-sit!
that was me mate Bruce...
Kudos to Hannah for putting together such a lovely gathering and thanks to Azeem and you all for tolerating my incoherent blathering. And demands for more drink. It was a real pleasure to spend time with such a welcoming and diverse bunch.
Went to nod land with contact lenses still attached to eyeballs, rendering myself half blind for most of the day, hence delayed gratitude’s :)
Ps. It appears I took some pics; lots of wobbly pics. But got one good one of the massive I could post if no one objects?
Massive Attack
Bit late to be doing this with my one good eye. Might have to resize...
Brian Eno was at it, what?
Even with BBC 4 doing an Eno night, blimey!
Yep
and Moby too.
Fraser seems to be raising his glass to a completely different photographer some 30ft to the left!
So...who's who?
I really wanted to come, but I've done some of these blogmeets before and they've not turned out quite as I'd hoped. However, this sounds like it was lots of fun, so next time definitely.
Well
from what I remember, Moby is actually Ganglesprocket and when not in superhero garb, Captain Underpants like to accessorise his smart casual attire with a scarf. Fraser is looking elsewhere and my crap skills at meeting people/remembering peoples names means I can't remember the other 3.
At the risk of boosting the Captain's ego too much...
I saw the photo and thought "What's Terence Stamp doing in the front row?!"
Thanks Patrick
I assume you mean Terence Stamp now - so you're saying I look 75?
Occam on the left, Karen's friend Bruce on the right, Queen Mum pulling a chicken out of Carl's head. Over here, Fraser!
No, not now!
You look very suave, that's all! Do you ever let yourself go and wear a Dumpy's Rusty Nuts sweat shirt?!
That's me in the
Lucinda Williams t-shirt and Lunaman is the guy in the blue t-shirt behind me raising his glass.
Cheers to all.......
:)
What?
If Ganglesprocket is Moby, are you suggesting I look like Eno Brother Blast?
caught
I didn't even spot it was your good self
I think I was Moby in my skinny years
I'm a bit more Jimmy Somerville these days
It sounds like..
a great night was had by all! Would loved to have made it, hopefully I can get over for the next one. I'll start saving for the flights and accommodation now!
Belated…
… thanks to Hannah (again) for organising t'meet up. Nice (and not at all scary) to put some faces and real names to the assumed ones. I was sorry to duck out early but sounds like the rest of the evening went without too much mishap (discounting Capt Underpants' misadventures…)
I definitely think...
...that when possible new features for the magazine next come up for discussion, the crew should seriously consider 'The Misadventures of Captain Underpants'.
Waaaaay to late unfortunately
Get
a room
Already trying to book one
for the next meet-up on Friday 26th March. Hooray!
Cittie of York
The Olde Cittie of York has a downstairs bar I think can be used for a private do. Don't know if they charge. Jolly nice boozer though and easy to get to.
http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/44/446/Cittie_of_Yorke/Holborn
Are you sure?
Last time I went past there (which I do frequently) the Cittie Of Yorke had morphed - rather depressingly - into a Carphone Warehouse, or Vodaphone shop.
I sincerely hope not...
Phew!
http://www.fancyapint.com/pubs/pub134.php
I think the phone shop is in a similar half timbered building just down the road, Azzers. Because if I am wrong obviously London needs one more mobile phone shop and one less delightful Victorian pub.
Good choice Twangothan, I'm up there tomorrow and will double check...
There's a Sam Smiths pub crawl in central London, someone has kindly produced a map...another time, I think...
http://www.jamesgretton.co.uk/samuelsmiths
I phoned them this morning to check
and the pub is still there.
I think the Carphone Warehouse are messing with Azeem's mind for fun.
Funnily enough
I was in the Cittie of York hurriedly raising a glass to a departing colleague just before going to the meet. ( I Work in Holborn). The downstairs area would be ideal. Let's hope it, or at least part of it, is bookable..
Only the front bar is available...
I don't know if that's downstairs or not. And we've got to clear £600 at the bar. Does that sound feasible? (I'm a lightweight tee-total sparkling mineral water drinker, so I really have no idea)
I'm not sure
Say 30 people turn up - that's £20 each behind the bar, which probably equates to 6 or 7 pints. I got royally merry on Friday night, but I spent less than £20.
That's also not including the teetotallers such as yourself. I think you'd need to able to guarantee around 50 people to clear that number.
Just out of interest, what would happen if we didn't clear £600? Would they charge you the difference?
Anyway, I think it's bare-faced cheek - we want to get some people together in a pub who are willing to spend some money and give the bar a profit; why should we have to guarantee a minimum spend?
Seconded
They might have to get in extra staff to cover that bar, but somehow I don't think £600 would be going the way of a couple of barmaids/men for an evening's work.
Anyway, I was perfectly happy with The Lamb. Did anyone not like that venue?
I'm glad to hear that Carl...
I was a bit worried that I'd made a bad recommendation! I think it is a great pub and yes, it was a bit cramped in the area we had, but I don't think such an excellent turn-out was expected!
Actually, I just checked about their upstairs bar and it is fully booked already on March 26th - it's only £40.00 to hire and all...shame as I would have been OK to have gone back there.
I was thinking about Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese which is a Sam Smith's place, lots of cellar rooms and various areas but I think the location (Fleet Street) wouldn't be so convenient.
Cittie of York is a good pub in a good location but £600.00 minimum spend is a bit steep - however, I do think it's a good idea to go for somewhere with a private room/area.
Some of the other decent boozers I know in the area, Museum Tavern and Princess Louise for example, don't have private rooms or areas which is a shame.
*Phone rings at the Lamb*
"Hello...the Word you say?...March 26th you say?"
*Thinks, "that lot from last Friday, lordy"*
"No terribly sorry we're fully booked that day..."
I think £600 would be a bit steep, and yes, they would ask us to make up the shortfall.
Also Sam Smiths is cheaper than the average pint-reckon we would need at least forty people to achieve that. Did anyone work out how many pitched up Friday?
They did put the phone down pretty quick
you're right!
600 quid
is 'aving a larf. I liked the Lamb very much, I was just suggesting a change for the sake of a change. I haven't been to the Cittie for ages I confess. Interesting fact about the Cittie - there is an enclosed fireplace in the middle of the room with no chimney! Cleverly, the actual chimney is ducted to pull the smoke DOWN through and under the floor to get out. Not sufficiantly interesting to pay the buggers 600 quid though. Should we still fancy an alternative there is a private room at the Yorkshire Grey just down the road, though as I said the Lamb is fine if a bit cramped. Anyone up for factoring in grub somehow?
http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/59/599/Yorkshire_Grey_Pub_and_Kit...
"Ipod music system, huge, mirror ball and funkyness"
According to that link that's The Yorkshire Grey's private room...! Sounds perfect - although not sure I'd qualify in any funkyness stakes though!
Ipod music system...
Cool, we can do the randomizer live! sounds like a great venue Mr. Twang.
Retro, I did like the Lamb, but it's a shame the upstairs room has gone...
We did it!
Azeem and I had a "real-life" randomiser in the pub on Friday. I was extremely nervous, but it could have gone a lot worse. My iPhone seemed to have a preference for Modest Mouse that day though
No guilty pleasures here!
I've forgotten the ones my iphone coughed up except David Bowie's Panic In Detroit. We'll have to try to get more to participate next time.
Oh, and 600 quid for the Cittie Of York is a jucking foke - you could hire a bloody hall for that.
Lots of my memory from last Friday is patchy
but Joan As Policewoman definitely came up too.
FWIW
West End much better for me - Lamb was a bit of a treck and way too cramped. Cheshire Cheese a great idea, but whatever gets chosen I'll try to come along.
TF for that!
I am most relieved.
blog names
At the behest of the Word admin I changed my user name to well, my name .
How boring it would have been to say I'm tony hunter but you can call me tony hunter.
That was one bad idea.
This gathering sounds like a good idea- any chance of convening in Melbourne next time?
if only!
I would love to go but it is kind of on the other side of the world just now.
I know that there is at least one other member of the Massive who is Melbourne-based - I'll send up a bat-signal and see if this gets his attention.
*CALLING MIKE PATERSON*
Five Things that I learned...
...from my interactions with other Word readers:
- The logistics of coaching an under-11s football team.
- The Captain Beefheart song: Her Eyes are a Blue Million Miles contains more heart and genuine emotion than the whole of his critically lauded, but hard to love, album - Trout Mask Replica.
- Even while stone cold sober I lack the technical nous to competently operate a digital camera.
- People who like Gary Moore are able to occupy the same room as people who do not like Gary Moore, without blood being spilled.
- The music of singing cellist, Caroline Lavelle, will inevitably draw adjectives such as “ethereal,” and lazy comparisons to Enya, but is still worthy of a listen.
Caroline Lavelle
Haha, that's almost a paraphrase of my review of her on emusic!
A piss up in a record library
surely us Jocks (famed for our drinking) can organise something.
I am attempting to diarise right now
Bad geography work-wise just now for me, but I'm trying to get that more settled. Next few weeks are no good, but I'm hoping to be a bit clearer by mid-March. If I can draw breath, I'll suggest a date.
Do the McMassive have a preference for Friday or Saturday ? City Centre ? Or West End / Southside / Merchant City ?
come on you lot
never had a thread go over 100 before....one more push!
Heave
Heave
Nearly there...
Yorkshire Grey is fine by me...
Argh!
*lifts metaphorical man hole lid*
100!
Congratulations!
Cue polite applause from the pavilion and a diffidently raised bat.

Now push on*
only another 1000 and we beat Patrick's fantasy bands thread!
*No, don't
that's ticked off the "to do before I die" list.
excellent, if we are to kick on to 1000, we need more pictures.
Will you be over
for the next one Steve?
well actually
I had promised Dad to come over and help him in the garden some time in March, and I do have to pass through London, so maybe.
more massive pics
that could be arranged, but they make the massive look a bit deranged ~ don't much fancy the hate mail and a price on my head that might ensue :-s
Surely not!
I think we're all wise enough to distinguish the message from the messenger.
Publish
