Friday Night at the Fantasy Piano Bar
Posted by Dave Amitri on 12 February 2010 - 12:32pm.
Last night was spent at Brixton Acadamy watching Lost Prophets with my boys , it was fun but very noisy and very shouty. I've had a tough week at work and I'm at my desk now in the hour we are allowed to use the internet for "social" purposes and when I get home tonight I intend relaxing in my Fantasy Piano Bar with something long and cold, some bar snacks and some pleasant company. Please can you help me fill the evening with a set of your favourite piano men and women. I'm opening with Barry Manilow, then it's over to you. Thanks!

The dancing fingers of Chico Marx
From "A Night at the Opera":
How about
Elton John - Tiny Dancer
Seconded.
There can be only one ....
Randy Newman: Louisiana 1927
"Mess Around / Cow Cow Blues" - Dr John
Some more
Gonzales - The Tourist
Not everyone's cup of tea but I think this Jamie Cullum penned song is rather special.
Regina Spektor - Human Of The Year
Joni Mitchell - River
Another
Charlie Rich and the demo version of Feel Like Going Home:
"Down River" by David Ackles.
This is a superb song:
And here it is done by Elton and Elvis, both of them demonstrating that it's a deceptively difficult song to sing:
"Disney Girls" - Bruce Johnston
Wake up, Bob:
Art for Art's sake.
A couple more
Dustin O'Halloran - Opus 20
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
Lyle Mays (Pat Metheney Group) - San Lorenzo
Time for Mr Benn
And Pink Martini
Obvious Choice
But I like it
Billy Joel - Piano Man
Ben Folds - Landed
Great ivory-tinkling
me too
But went for Ben Folds instead (and as well)
Got to have some Tori, surely?
Thrashing Doves? Big in Ibiza
It's not too late for a bit of Carole
Alicia Keys as well...
Lumme, Kate's late...
...Kate's great:
...isn't she?
Mrs Costello
doing one of her best songs imo
http://www.artistdirect.com/artist/videos/diana-krall/514006-777950-1
and the late Esbjorn Svensson
(have been playing this all week)
bit of jazz?
the virtuosity of Chick Corea on display here:
My favourite ivory-tinkler
Thelonious Monk
A little late night music from Ravel
My original quest
was interrupted by kids and wife, however from Chico to Elton via Randy and Alicia and the brilliant Charlie Rich whom I've never heard before (is that really embarrassing or is he obscure) there is some great music here. Finally without distractions I'm going to listen to the rest (and for those that know me I've resisted posting any JC, treatment's working). Any more?
Charlie Rich - one of the Kings of Rock & Roll
He recorded for Sun in the 50s - including the fantastic "Lonely Weekends" - and recorded many great country hits too, including "Behind Closed Doors". He made great records until he passed away in '95
But he's not well known - and there's no embarrassment on this website in not knowing every b-side of his oeuvre, especially when that is balanced by liking him!!
Lonely Weekends
Behind Closed Doors :
Thanks for that
I knew "Behind Closed Doors" but couldn't have named the singer if my life depended on it. My Dad loved that song and hearing it again has evoked some memories I didn't expect, a best of from HMV beckons!
This is now my favourite
thread of the ones (probably too many) that I have started. The quality and diversity of the music is stunning, I will be returning to listen to these songs again and again. I'm adding one more before retiring for the night.
Gilbert O'Sullivan "Nothing Rhymed"
Get away
That's Michael Owen isn't it?
Which gives me an excuse to post this
Gilbert O'Sullivan - Twos Company, Three Is Allowed
It's late..
so how about some Dusty and piano:
More Billy
After everyone went home
a few played on
Dave Brubeck - Strange Meadowlark
Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) - Fire In The Hole
Nicky Hopkins - Waiting For The Band
Richard Carpenter - This Masquerade
Spotfied
Such a good musical thread I've created a collaborative spotify list
http://open.spotify.com/user/ahh_bisto/playlist/7Lm00GM0qMiPVXmhT9ZC0r
Unable to add Joni Mitchell's River, the only track from the Blue album not available! No Thrashing Doves at all. This Woman's Work unavailable so replaced with Feel It from her debut album which I think is in keeping with the vibe. And Dusty's peelings weren't there so Ms. Krall is having a go on a grape instead.
It seems to have evolved into
Saturday morning at the Fantasy Piano Bar. Unfortunately I don't have Spotify, you couldn't tell me how to go about getting it could you? I'd love to have access to these songs without the Youtube band width eater!
You need an invite from a premium subscriber
of Spotify. I'm only a free subscriber so I can't invite you.
You may get somewhere here http://spotifyinvites.org/ but I suspect you'll need to fill out some kind of a survey to get the invite.
I've still got some invites
Send me an email (via the contact page) and I'll send you an invite
I've sent you an invite
Check your e-mail.
To the 3 of you
Abba say it best, and there's some piano.
I'm listening to
your playlist as I type this. I spend enough time on this bloody computer as it is, now I have Spotify I think I'll need more hours in the day. Good though isn't it?
Punk piano: "Holiday in Cambodia"
Here's footage of a bar-room pianist by the name of DJ Lebowitz playing a great version of the Dead Kennedys' "Holiday in Cambodia".
I love the idea of him playing the usual standards - "Unforgettable", "Embraceable You" - and then launching into this menacing classic. It's yet more evidence of the versatility of the piano:
Rick Wakeman I believe...
...tickled these ivories...
...in fact pretty much any piano tracks recorded at Trident Studios (Queen, Elton and "Hey Jude" by the Fabs).. were sublime
"If You Knew" - Nina Simone
So much choice with the High Priestess of Soul...
Here's a performance from 1985, at Ronnie Scott's:
Some low-key Tom Waits...
"On The Nickel":
"Take Me Home":
(OK, I'll stop now, I promise.)
Then there's Ray, What'd I say
As usual
Mike Garson and the most brilliantly bonkers, beautiful and back again, jolie laid as the French say, ivory bothering session in the history of rock
David Bowie "Aladdin Sane"
oh...
yes.
Some more of the classical variety
Shostakovich - 2nd Piano Concerto, Andante
If the entrance of the piano at around the 1' 25" mark doesn't move you then we'll have to agree to disagree
Rachmaninov - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Variation 18 gets me every time.
Rubén González
...with the Buena Vista Social Club:
Duke Ellington, Willie "The Lion" Smith & Billy Taylor
...playing "Perdido" on the David Frost Show. Dig that bowler hat & cigar look:
...and here's Billy Taylor playing "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free":
Keith Emerson .v. the mighty Oscar Peterson...
Oscar wins, at the very least by looking far more relaxed. Keith needs to loosen up a little:
All this way and no Fats Domino?
"Walking to New Orleans"
The Professor
None more Nawlins
Johnnie Johnson
I love the stutter in this - Chuck Berry - You Never Can Tell
Blue Roses
Greatest Thoughts
Pianos against heroin
I always liked the sinister, languid piano on "Don't Bring Harry" by The Stranglers:
