Friday afternoon drinking....

Dave Holley's picture

Its Friday afternoon. I'm just about fully recovered from the hangover obtained at last night's bacchanalian orgy and am beginning to think about a glass of something in a hour or two.

I'm licking my lips at the thought of a pint of Ramrod & special at the local.

I need a soundtrack to play on my way to the pub, to get me even more in the mood.

What suggestions do you have? (NB I already have "I am a cider drinker" by The Wurzels ready to go!)

How about the Ronettes?

'Beer my, beer my baby..'

No?

Fair enough.

"We'll have another round"

You'll need some Pogues, of course. One of my favourites is "The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn", which seems to be describing history's wildest drinking binge:

Do you know what the Pogues song was called

that had the refrain something along the lines of

"I'll have a pint, I'll have a pint, I'll have a pint with you sir

My old man said to ?? I'll meet you down the boozer" ?

It was fast and furious.

Waxie's Dargle!

waxies dargle is the song you seek, sir

there's any amount of pogues drinking songs. Sally McLinnane is my own personal favourite, and Pair of Brown Eyes for the end of the night, when the barman is asking 'have you no homes to go to?' as is his wont around these parts.

Just say no

Here's a cover version of the Kink's "Alcohol", adapted to be an animated public information broadcast. Happy ending and all.

Jerry Lee Lewis is always good for drinking songs..

- What's Made Milwaukee Famous
- There Stands the Glass

..especially if you are feeling a bit sorry for yourself....

Not one he sings these days, I'll wager

"I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
The deepest ocean, my love to find
But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
And neither have I the wings to fly
If I could find me a handsome boatman
To ferry me over my love and I
My childhood days bring back sweet reflections
The happy times I spent so long ago
My boyhood friends and kind relations
Have all past on now like melting snow
I'll spend my da - ys an endless rover
Soft is the grass and sure, my bed is free
Oh but to be back, in carrickfergus
To strike that lonely road, down by the sea
And in kilkenny it is reported
On marble stone there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her
But I'll sing no more now til I get a drink
For I'm drunk today and I'm seldom sober
A handsome rover from town to town
Ah but I'm sick now my days are numbered
Come all ye young men and lay me down."

There was a fabulous promotional video of Van Morrison and the Chiefrtains performing this, when it first came out. Van was playing drums, looking like the odd one in the band, that being quite something to behold, photogenicity being, arguably, not Paddy and the boys strongest suit!

I wouldn't dare!

Derek Bell, RIP, was a tiger in a brawl. Or, I suspect, not. I cannot recommend his LP "Carolans Receipt" highly enough, simple solo irish harp, played beauteously. It's on e-music, pop-pickers!

i preferred the album

Derek Bell Plays With Himself, if only for the title.

Derek Bell's Musical Ireland

is also recommended. I picked it up in the music shop at Roundstone a couple of weeks ago, along with an album of Paddy Glackin and Paddy Keenan.
