Freddie Mercury tribute

Gooner1050's picture

Nice tribute to FM from Google:

The great one would have been 65 today - Wow! If that doesn't make you feel old....

Other things that make you feel old?

0

The answer as always is Debbie Harry

Who would have quite frankly made me feel old 30 years ago.

0
clivetemple | 5 September 2011 - 10:37am

Debbie Harry

Slightly off topic -

Whenever Debbie Harry appeared on the telly, my dad used to say to us, “she’s the same age as your mum” – which I used to take as a mildly interesting fact. In retrospect, I realise that he was really saying “she’s the same age as your mum – why doesn’t your mum look like that?”

Railroad Bill | 5 September 2011 - 11:25am

That means the tribute gig

was almost 20 years ago. Sweet baby Jesus and the orphans!

0
DogFacedBoy | 5 September 2011 - 11:45am

Godness me!

My eldest is 20!

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 3:41pm

What makes me feel old

is seeing your sentence 'The great one would have been 65 today' and thinking 'Ooh, 65's not that old really'.

1
Mr Fade | 5 September 2011 - 11:48am

Sorry!

I'm feeling younger already!

North Bank

Remembering standing on the North Bank at Highbury for £3 watching Rocky , Stewart Robson , Niall Quinn , Paul Merson et al make their debut and the Club Shop was a glorified shed at the Clock End .

0
Danmac | 5 September 2011 - 11:57am

You're just a youngster !

Try watching Charlie George (went to the same school as me but that's a different story!), Frank Maclintock, Peter Story, etc. Not to mention another "great one" albeit slightly stained, George Graham!

Thinking about it GG would have been the manager when Merse made his debut! (?)

1
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 2:47pm

Yes

I was there then as well . I remember a tasty match V Chelsea when Bertie pulled over Peter Storey who then signaled he was moving up front by booting Chopper Harris somewhere near the ribs

Have lived in Newcastle since 1986 .

I also have a piece of the original North Bank .

0
Danmac | 6 September 2011 - 12:25am

Are you sure it was 3 quid?

I'm sure it was seven quid around that time- I used to go directly from work for evening games - I was the only bugger there in a suit! lol

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 2:52pm

It might have been

It was only six quid to stand on the North Bank on 90/91

Martin Keown leaving Arsenal

He was the last player older than me to play for the club.

0
YTDS | 6 September 2011 - 12:38am

Maybe my mind plays tricks

Whats the equivalent these days - not that you can just roll up on a whim!

0
Gooner1050 | 6 September 2011 - 6:29am

Lower Tier, behind the goal

£51 for a Category A match, £35 for a Category B

"Match ticket pricing at Emirates Stadium is based on the principle of an A and B grading, as follows: Category A fixtures: Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United, Man City, Tottenham.

All remaining Premier League games will be category B as will the majority of FA Cup, UEFA Competitions and Carling Cup matches. However, there will be some specific matches which will be designated as Category A. Details will be communicated at the appropriate time."

0
YTDS | 6 September 2011 - 8:59am

51 quid???

I remember when you could get through the turnstile at Griffin Park for 35p.

0
Billybob Dylan | 6 September 2011 - 6:13pm

Is that when 35p

was considered a lot of money! Seven shillings?

0
Gooner1050 | 6 September 2011 - 6:25pm

Worcestershire cricket club

used to let kids in for 6d after 4pm during County Championship games in the early/mid 1960s. Even by the early 1970s it was only 5p (25p for adults if I remember correctly)

0
stimpy | 7 September 2011 - 12:03pm

very poor value

They would have had to pay me a lot more than that

0
Jed Clampett | 6 September 2011 - 7:51am

Got a........

.....terrace ticket stub from an FA Cup 6th Round Tie in March 1990 in front of me.
QPR v Liverpool.
£5.

Mind you, I see that the rot had already started to kick in as it was on a Sunday.

Ironically a fiver is now what I pay to see my local team in the Ryman League.

Third generation footballers

Reading about Mark Hateley's son playing for Motherwell and realising that I used to watch his Granddad playing for Liverpool...

2
Paul Waring | 5 September 2011 - 1:27pm

Plenty of things

The realisation that at parties/functions, I am often the least drunk person there these days. The urgent need to get trolleyed has gone, without me noticing.

3
Austin | 5 September 2011 - 12:26pm

The fact that I'm now

older than the Prime Minister was a bit of a slap in the face. Felt quite nauseous after the election!

Come to think of it, that nausea hasn't gone away yet - not sure it's the age issue, more the bloke occupying the post.

1
renkadima | 5 September 2011 - 12:40pm

fancying a

prime minister's wife is a sign you're getting on too.

2
niscum | 5 September 2011 - 4:01pm

You're right.

That Mary Wilson was a cracker, wasn't she?

Oh.

2
Paul Waring | 5 September 2011 - 4:14pm

Mary Wilson, now that reminds me

Wasn't there rumours that Harold and his secretary were more than close?

1
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 4:24pm

Indeed

Unfortunately for The Move (and Roy Wood in particular), they gave voice to this scurrilous allegation - Wilson sued, won, and the royalties for (I think) Flowers in the Rain were then paid in perpetuity to a charity of Harold's choosing.

So be careful what you say!

But why would Harold's eye wander whan he had a fox like Mary at home?

0
Paul Waring | 5 September 2011 - 4:42pm

allegedly

I need to start using that word before spreding these "rumours"!

Regarding the Move - I had never heard that one - fascinating. That's got to be worth a tidy sum. Was that the first track played on Radio One or was it I Can Hear The Grass Grow?

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 4:55pm

Late Summer Flowers

Yes the first record played on Radio One was Flowers in the Rain - I remember waking around 6.50 so I could listen to the big switch off of the Light Program and the start of Radio One (and two, Three and Four)
I don't think the law suit payout was over Flowers......I think it was an earlier single....Night Of Fear possibly?

0
daff | 5 September 2011 - 5:37pm

Just checked Wiki (so it must be right)

And the entry for Harold does say it was "a promotional postcard for 'Flowers...'" that gave rise to the lawsuit and it was that song's royalties that were affected.

Which must have cost Roy Wood well upwards of a million notes, I would have thought?

0
Paul Waring | 5 September 2011 - 6:33pm

First record played on Radio One

is, legendarily, "Flowers in the Rain."

In reality, it wasn't. "Theme One" by George Martin was the first, followed by Tony Blackburn's theme, "Beefeaters", both of which were commercial records.

0
Wardour | 5 September 2011 - 5:39pm

you are half right

I'd never thought about it like that!
My rusty memory seems to tell me that the George Martin music was indeed played but I think that was in the moments prior to the 07.00 pips.
Wasn't it in order of: Theme One followed by a sort a count in ("stand by Radio One, stand by Radio Two......." ) by Derek Chinnery, the pips, Tony Blackburn's theme music straight after, a few words from him where he welcomes everybody (and says "even Arnold the dog is here)" then he says "Let's Away" and Flowers is played?!?!

0
daff | 5 September 2011 - 5:55pm

Spot on, daff.

Except - and this is admittedly pedantry - Blackburn continued his announcement tentatively over the start of "Flowers in the Rain." Any recording which goes straight into the record after the more dynamic "So let's away" has been edited.

(Note: however, the BBC's own archive copy - on a 12" LP - cuts off immediately after "let's away", presumably due to copyright concerns.)

Edit: the "stand by" bit was Robin Scott, Controller of Radio 1.

0
Wardour | 5 September 2011 - 6:00pm

Thanks!

If nothing else at least my memory is still good - thank you too for Robin Scott clarification.

0
daff | 5 September 2011 - 6:20pm

Arnold the Dog!

I'd forgotton all about him - in truth I thought he didn't come along until much later - the seventies maybe - well I never!. Tony Blackburn on the other hand.....Still pops up on stations here in London. Still barking mad (in my opinion!) but you can't help but admire the guys "stickability" - to coin a football phrase!

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 6:45pm

Old Sea Dog!

I think Arnold actually started his famous 'life' back on the Pirate ship with Tony before Radio One!

As for TB himself he has stood the test of time well - I listen here and there to his Saturday Radio Two Pick of the Pops show and he is perfect on it.

A funny thing too is that in the late 60's he was sort of laughed at/looked down upon for his constant love of Motown music during the period of 'progressive music'. John Peel and him seemed to be complete opposites! Here we are 40+ years later and we all love and know the Four Tops, the Temptations and the Supremes but is that true of Taste, Country Joe and the Electric Prunes?!?!?

0
daff | 5 September 2011 - 7:02pm

Good Point!

So here's to TB - Toptastic!

How old is he now?

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 7:32pm

She was!

What a risk she took when she left Harold and joined up with Diana and Flo in the Supremes!

0
daff | 5 September 2011 - 8:21pm

A Love Supreme?

She was! What a shock it was though when she left Harold and teemed up with Diana and Flo!

0
daff | 5 September 2011 - 8:35pm

Did She Leave him twice?

I knew when Mary was mentioned it was only a matter of time until we were talking the Suprems!

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 8:54pm

Cindy incidentally ?

No she only left him once - my mistake!

0

A couple from amongst hundreds...

1. The Joshua Tree by U2 was released 24 years ago. Ouch.

2. Paul Scholes has retired from playing football. It seems like yesterday he joined the Manchester United first team.

I'm nearly....

2

Why not?

Joey Barton's comparing himself to Monet and Van Gogh:

@Joey7Barton
Joseph Barton
National Gallery was vv gd. Monet and I like very similar colours. I think he's my new fav. Although VVG and his madness endear him to me

Where's me washboard? Have you seen it?

Both those started nearly 18 years ago now. (Lionel Nimorod's Inexplicable World nearly 20) How queer.....

I had to count back and check you were right

once I had remembered what year it was now. Alas you are. That's frightening. Still, suits you sir!

Back to the Future

Introduced that to the kids on Saturday night (they liked it, though me and the GLW were shocked by the swearing in it - it would maybe be a 12A now). The thought that we are almost as far away from 1985 as 1985 was from 1955 (4 years I know but it'll go like that)was frightening.

0
Mike Todd | 5 September 2011 - 2:09pm

GLW?

Assume that's something to do with the wife?

Prince's 1999

you now look back on both the song's release year and song's title year with the same dim memories

0
niscum | 5 September 2011 - 4:04pm

It Please Pleased Me

One thing that makes me feel old is that it is now just over 48 (FORTY EIGHT!) years since my dad gave me my first two records to play on the Dansette Bermuda he bought me........those records were 'From Me to You' by the HJHMs and 'Scarlet O'Hara by Jet Harris and Tony Meehan.

0
daff | 5 September 2011 - 5:30pm

Have you still got them

?

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 7:29pm

I certainly have!

Still in their respective Paralphone and Decca paper sleeves. Still quite playable I'd guess. Only down side is I remember writing the song titles and artist names on the sleeves and, to this very day, I can recall starting to to write'From Me to You' but put the letter F the wrong way around! (I was only nine!)
Memories!

daff | 5 September 2011 - 8:19pm

The Meek shall inherit

I remember Telstar coming out, 49 years ago, and it sounded like NOTHING had ever sounded before. And here's the thing - it sounds like nothing since, either.

The entire cast of The Prisoner has been dying of old age. That makes me feel ancient!

0
Anglepoised | 5 September 2011 - 7:31pm

How Strange!

Was in the Holloway Road earlier on today and passed by the building where Telstar was recorded by Joe Meek - has a plaque on the wall (not blue but green I think - anyone know the difference?). Now there's a great story!! They should make a film of that - I know they have but I mean a good one!

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 7:45pm

Perhaps apocryphal...

...but I did hear of a banner on a block of flats in the Manchester area that read, "happy 30th Nana."

0
Toffee the Cat | 5 September 2011 - 7:37pm

Something made me feel old today.

I made a 'comedic' reference to the Sinclair ZX81 home computer, and then realised that the person I'd said it to - a colleague - wasn't even born in 1981, let alone able to get into the same postcode as the reference.

0
Adman | 5 September 2011 - 7:53pm

That's a whole different thread!

Was that the Spectrum?

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 8:12pm

The Speccy's dad

ZX81 was the black and white, soundless, predecessor of the Best Computer Evah (TM).

But it did have 3D Monster Maze...

0
pompeygeorge | 5 September 2011 - 8:29pm

I remember

the Specky (as I called it) wiping my butt at scrabble on many occasions!

0
Gooner1050 | 5 September 2011 - 8:50pm

in a similar vein

I asked one of the young ladies I was working with 10 years ago to pass me the 'sticky backed plastic' in a jokey way. They thought I was some kind of weirdo completely missing the blue peter reference. I was like 'but you MUST remember that? Anyone?' Silence.

0
niscum | 5 September 2011 - 8:22pm

Just watching a tribute on ITV4

He certainly had a type.

Basically Tash-era Freddie.

0

And no I won't reveal how I know that

Going Underground

went to number 1 31 years ago, 31 years before that it was 1949. I'm going for a lie down.......

0
Dave Amitri | 5 September 2011 - 9:43pm

12 years old

off school ill, lying in bed as I heard Gary Davies say "And straight in at number one The Jam with Going Underground...!" I can remember it very vividly. It may have been the first time I actually heard the song too. I could not believe a single had gone straight to the top of the charts. They were my favourite band at the time soon to break my heart by splitting up just when I'd started to buy singles regularly. The Style Council were to reap the benefits until I went the whole hog with The Smiths.

0
Mr Fade | 5 September 2011 - 10:23pm

God, I'm feeling old...

I remember watching The Honeycombs playing 'Have I The Right?' on TV in 1964. There was a lovely lass on drums (Honey Lantree). That was 47 years ago (I was 8 years old).

0
Baskerville Old Face | 7 September 2011 - 11:46am

Tell Me.............When

Do you recall around the same time seeing the Applejacks on tv too? They had a female bass guitarist - Megan Davis I think. She would be in her mid-late 60's now!

0

Realising my six year old daughter

Is older in relation to 'Firestarter' than I am to 'Please please me'.
