Forget Top Of The Pops, Later and The Tube
It's a grand claim, but I'm saying 'The Beat' could be the greatest music show ever and that's purely on the pedigree of these three clips...
It's Otis Redding doing 'Mr. Pitiful', and introducing an explosive guest list...
Here's Freddie King - doing 'Papa's got a brand new bag' backed by Buddy Miles on bass and Gatemouth Brown on rhythm guitar
And the mighty man-mass that is Roger Martin (who he?)with 'They Say'
All presented by Bill "Hoss" Allen - who's pet name for the performers seems to be "swinging darlings" - it's available on DVD - but only in the US. So could be worth dropping a few early doors Christmas hints.

I love the way...
when Otis introduces everyone, they all stand behind him and jig along to the beat. Can you imagine that ever happening on Jools Holland? Genius!
Aren't those backing dancers great?
And why has everyone got such huge feet, or is it just the slim fit troos ?- but even those shoes can't out-stomp the heavyweight plates of Arthur Conley
Gary Crowley
For a moment there I thought you meant 'The Beat' - ITV's post pub indie programme presented by Gary Crowley which ran in the early nineties. I've still got loads of them on tape.
It makes me dizzy
just remembering it. Back in them there pre-internet days, where else (apart from Snub TV) could you get Chapterhouse playing 'Falling Down' live at the Fulham Greyhound on telly? Or, for that matter, Suede doing a CRACKING gig before they'd even put out their first single. (edit- the Gary Crowley one, obviously. Suede never turned up on American pop and soul revue shows, sadly)
If that's Buddy Miles on bass..
..then I'm Jimi Hendrix's auntie.
I'm quite prepared to accept that it's Billy Cox (who WAS a bass player.)
Whoops
I read it the comments on some other Freddie Youtube clip - but should have known better as I credited Billy Cox on something about Freddie I whacked in my blog a while back
