For Beeswing Fans Only

peterafifer's picture

I read somewhere that the opening scenes of Beeswing may have been set in Dundee. Guess who was at a meeting in an old church in Caldren Street tonight? A wee frisson for me.

Woman with wolfhound and bottle of White Horse?

Lyrical convenience

Yes, there was a public washhouse ("steamie") in Caldrum Street in Dundee up until the 70s; Thompson had relatives in the city and remembered the washhouse from childhood visits. According to the man himself, there was never an intention to set the song's scene in Dundee; it was just lyrically convenient. He misspelt it as "Cauldrum".

I remember being taken to a public washouse in Sheffield..

..when I was very young, helping my mother push the washing in a pram.
..then we'd lick road clean wit' tongue.
