Shall be making an increasingly rare visit to the Manchester Fopp on thursday, Mrs Mint will not be with me, so browsing time is unlimited. Any good buys around at the moment?

Loads
of course and I do have a soft spot for Fopp but these days it is essentially an HMV shop with a nicer logo and nice decor (and strangely the staff at the two actual HMV shops in town are more enthusiastic and friendly for some reason).
I dare say you will find plenty of good stuff but do try some of the many other record shops in our fair city:

Excellent site!
You have a new Facebook 'Like'-er.
Lovely site!
is that your own work?
Yes I usually drop by Piccadilly Records when I visit Manchester, very good shop, if a bit on the pricey side. Vinyl Exchange, on the other hand, I find hard work. Rifling through hundreds of cd sleeves in plastic wallets, doesn't do it for me nowadays i'm afraid.
As for the other shops I have to say i've never visited any of them, couple of them are not my thing i.e Eastern Block. You are very lucky in Manchester, blessed with so many shops
Ah...
The trick in Vinyl Exchange is to take the plastic wallets out of the display and flick through them in your hand (ooer missus). I tend to have a soft spot for the unsaleable items, the ones starting off at £8 and reduced at regular intervals by £1 until they reach a paltry giveaway price where you just have to purchase and re-home them.
Thanks
My own work although my mate Carl wrote a lot of the reviews and visited some of the dustier crate digging haunts
Witmark Sessions were £15
in the Fopp-like Rise when I paid a recent visit. And the mono sampler was a fiver. Not necessarily a bragain, but a pleasant impulse buy.
A bargain, I reckon, was the Art Pepper 4 for a fiver reissue I got from Amazon the other day ... "Meets the Rhythm Section" plus 3 more LPs on 2CDs.
Recent bargains in the Glasgow branch - mostly at £3.
Jazz - several "4 LPs on 2 CDs" including Art Pepper, Modern Jazz Quartet, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie. Ella Fitzgerald - the complete Duke Ellington and Rodgers & Hart songbooks on 3 CDs.
Rockabilly - a 3 CD "Rockabilly's Gravest Hits", with Charlie Feathers, Mac Curtis, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Gene Vincent and many more.
Reggae - several from Virgin's Front Line label - Tappa Zukie, Mighty Diamonds, Gladiators.
Books - really good crime writer Jeff Abbott, most of his books were £2. Alice Crumb's memoir - £3. Ray Lowry's "Ink" - £1.
DVDs - Tutti Frutti was £5, Ray Charles live in Brazil (in the 60s) £3.
Have a good day!
Ray Lowry
Thoroughly recommend this compendium of the great man's work.
Thanks for that
will look out for that for a quid.
Fop Watch!
Not many of these in Manchester : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Day-Peacock-Style-Men-1963/dp/1851776001/ref=sr_...
Was in the London branch
on Sunday and picked up Nick Kent's Dark Stuff and Apathy for £2 each.
Fopp in Manchester currently has...
...the 2cd Best of The Durutti Column for £5 - bargain.
thanks for the tip
I picked one up in Glasgow today, plus the recent Nick Kent book, which I think is reasonable for £7 all in.
Also in Fopp London
The Pretenders - five studio albums for £12. There were other artists but I can only remember the Cars.
Another two
There are also Little Feat and Warren Zevon sets, plus a couple more.
Some more
Dr John, Carol King and Los Lobos
I'm making my annual Ireland
I'm making my annual Ireland to Fopp trip next Thursday and will be heading into Fopp Manchester. I've been looking through tweets and stuff to see what offers/bargains were there - glad I checked this. Ta! Any other nuggets?
Today's purchases
Van's Veedon Fleece (finally) down to a fiver, and the DVD of A Prophet for the same money.
Aforementioned Atlantic £3 sets : only have Volumes 2,3 and 7 left.
Atlantic Records
Soul and R&B compilations from various eras dating back to the 1950s, all at £3 each
Doods and Glenbervie -
Doods and Glenbervie - thanks for that.
Veedon Fleece is one I hope to pick up - I'm currently buying up anything that Van recorded in the late 60s', 70's and 80's and that is one missing from the collection at present.
I've also had my eye on those Atlantic box sets for a while - but have held off in the hope that Fopp would have them. I've done the same withe the 5 album box sets of artists such as the Pretenders, Chicago and others for 12 quid.
As I always say before I walk in the door of a Fopp
" Mastercard forgive me, for I can not be responsible for what I do".
PSB's 'In Concrete'
2 CD live album with added strings for £3. For some reason features Nobbie Williams ruining 'Jealousy'. Still a bargain
Today's impulse
was Passion, Grace & Fire (which I once had, and had nicked); Ian Carr's "Out of the Long Dark/Old Heartland" (heard via one of the Radio 3 Jazz 'casts); and Father Ted: The Definitive Edition ...
... Now fetch me my pipe and slippers ...
