Fopp!
Posted by Brian Cleary on 21 May 2011 - 1:33pm.
Heading over to the UK for a flying visit next week (we've had your Queen here in Ireland for the last week, so it's payback time). Will be in close proximity to a Fopp (Manchester) and will also be in possession of a few of your British quids.
As I have an unhealthy love of Fopp Manchester could the Massive make some suggestions as to what latest bargains that I could pick up in there?

I was in that very store yesterday
And picked up, in no particular order (£5 unless indicated):
The National - Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers
The National - Cherry Tree
Robert Plant - Band of Joy
Brendan Benson - My Old Familiar Friend (£3)
Elliott Smith - New Moon (£6)
We Are Scientists - Brain Thrust Mastery (£2)*
The very best of Nina Simone
X-Men - The Last Stand (Blu-Ray) (£3)
Lots of cheap CSI box sets at £3 each, if that floats your boat.
*I already own this. But it was only £2.
Brendan Benson
I was in the Covent Garden Fopp this morning and noticed that the Brendan Benson CD has 2 extra tracks that they claim are exclusive to HMV but my Emusic download included them.

Thanks Paul, I must keep an eye out for the Robert Plant and National albums. The last time that I was there (Oct 2010) I picked up some back catalogue Fleetwood Mac (pre Nicks and Buckingham), Van Morrison albums from the 70's that I didn't have, John Martyn, lots of jazz stuff and some Dylan stuff (which I discovered I already had when I got back to Tipperary).
Any recommendations from any of the Massive welcome.
Thanks again Paul.
iTunes
If you have all your CDs ripped to iTunes, it's a doddle to export a listing every so often to put on your phone/pda/ipod touch as a spreadsheet so that you can check what you've got when you're in the record shop rather than once you get home. I've carried a list of my collection around with me now for a good 8 years and the downside is that it actually encourages me to buy because before that I erred on the side of safety when I wasn't sure, but when there's no doubt I haven't got something I head for the cash desk!
I got the Kevin Cummins book
I got the Kevin Cummins book (blue, Morrissey on the cover) for a steal a few weeks ago. Can't remember how much it was, I'm afraid, but it considerably less than the £20 I baulked at a few weeks previous.
Manchester Fopp
My purchases there last Thursday were:
Best Coast - Crazy For You (£5)
The Cardigans - Best of (£5)
Magazine - The Correct Use Of Soap (£3)
I only had 10 minutes browsing time...
Don't know if the books
will be up to much by the time you come over now Waterstones are no longer part of the group.
I went in there yesterday
I went in there yesterday with money burning a hole in my pocket and I struggled to spend thirteen quid. I came out of the place totally disappointed.
I had last been there in Oct/Nov and I noticed this time that the prices had increased on a huge amount of the stock. Also, there were lots of empty shelves.
Gutted.
That's a shame...
Sign of the times, I guess.
(£3, double album.)
I hate you all
Why isn't there a Fopp in Newcastle? Dear God, why?!
Do you have public transport, and gig venues?
Think yourself lucky then...
Fopp Glasgow, last week, ...
...had Orphans, the Tom Waits triple for three pounds. English notes accepted.
Dunno if any are in Manc though.
