"Man buys Pink Floyd box set, puts it on shelf, feels sad

A MIDDLE-AGED man is feeling oddly downhearted after buying an expensive limited edition box set of music by the favourite band of his youth......"

Comedy discussion!

That's a funny headline but the piece goes off the boil the longer it goes on. It's very difficult to formulate these spoof-news pieces without resorting to "Bono-is-a-cock" comedy shorthands for quick laughs.

There was a fascinating piece on This American Life a few months ago about how the Onion comes up with its headlines and stories. It was amazingly brutal. 20 jokes are written for everyone that makes it. And they are so rigorous about quality and trying to source some indefinable essence of what is deeply funny versus what just causes an unsatisfying quick laugh.

Thanks for posting HH, not having a go, just think it's an interesting piece of writing. The humour in the piece comes from the sadness of the man, not from the ludicrousness of the boxes. Maybe I'm wrong...

Yup ...

The Daily Mash is The Onion with 99% of the wit crushed out in a vice. Still and all, like you say, a good headline. Should have left it there.

As another poster (almost) said, the latest remasters are an ideal opportunity to show Pink Floydco Global Holdings what we think of them by a massive campaign of illegal downloading. If I'd actually paid for the DSOTM "Experience" I'd be feeling strangely abused.

all suggestions welcome

as to how discs 2 and 6 of the immersion edition can be obtained for a sum considerably lower than 80 quid. not interested in the rest of the package really.

In a moment of madness, I re-wrote it.

Man buys Pink Floyd box set, puts it on shelf, feels sad

A MIDDLE-AGED man is feeling oddly downhearted after buying an expensive limited edition box set of music by the favourite band of his youth.

Tom Logan, a 48 year-old systems analyst, spent £100 on a box containing the Immersion edition of Dark Side of the Moon. The box, which contains 3 CDs, 2 DVDs, a blu-ray disc, two books, some large art prints, some small art prints, a ticket, a scarf, some marbles and a coaster heralds the start of an extensive reissue campaign by the legendary British group.

Logan, whose unfulfilling job gives him a high disposable income, has already curated such mammoth boxes as the David Bowie Station To Station reissue and, in a move that demonstrates the breadth of his music tastes, a three-CD Motown collection.

"I see the box as a totem of my cash-rich, time-poor life" said Logan, "when I originally bought these records I used to get lost in them for hours at a time. When I saw this Immersion version of Dark Side of the Moon had been suggested to me by Amazon, I assumed that I would be able to immerse myself in the music again".

"I mean, it's just going to be such a battle to find time to rip the discs to my Mac."

Logan said: "I'm fairly certain that this Pink Floyd box set contains a magical portal back to my youth. The kids today might think they've got it made with their 20th Anniversary editions of Nevermind, but back in the day, Floyd really cared about their fans. They cared so much that as their albums got worse, they left more time in between releases for the fans to recover until the next one came out."

Logan was asked if the experience had put him off buying similar commemorative reissues in the future. "Not at all. I've cleared some shelf space for the upcoming Quadrophenia box and I've noticed that there's a deluxe one-disc reissue of Close To The Edge on the horizon. I'm quite excited about that."

I also laughed

although the solution is painfully obvious - buy two box sets, one to listen to, one for the shelf.

Pretty brave

considering what's being advertised on the page...

Edit: it's gone now. There was an ad for the box set on the page.
