Damned Damned Damned: New Rose

I'd beg to differ

though not on the quality. It made a brilliant 45, perhaps even the original and best punk single.

That's one for the teenagers!

A quick scrabble at the shelves suggests :

MC5 - Back In The USA - "High School" (which doesn't seem to be on youtube)

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band - Clear Spot - "Clear Spot"

The Fleshtones - Hexbreaker - "Right Side Of A Good Thing"

Robert Gordon/Link Wray - S/T "Flyin Saucers Rock & Roll"

Get ready to bang that head...

Rainbow - Stargazer

Head duly banged

I havent listened to Stargazer for years, what a fantastic song.

Because I know the 80s will

Because I know the 80s will be under-represented:
American Without Tears
Heart And Soul - Joy Division (although for years I thought it was side 1)
Your Silent Face and Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order
Plan B/I'll Show You - Dexy's
The Look Of Love ABC
Express Yourself - NWA
April Skies and Sidewalking - Jesus And Mary Chain
What Presence? - Orange Juice
Where Is My Mind? - Pixies

Also
Jammming - The Wailers
Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack
The Ship Song - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
And the much superior version of "My Sister" on the Tindersticks' live LP (side 2 of a double LP permitted?)

Steely Dan

A genuine question. Steely Dan are a band that I know nothing about... In the 'Reeling In The Years' clip above, I'm pretty sure it's Donald Fagen on vocals? Is Walter Becker on 2nd guitar?... and who is the chap in the middle who looks like he should be the lead singer (in a Mike Love kind of way)?

David Palmer

He sang a bit on the first two SD albums, notably on Dirty Work.

Here's one of my fave side two openers:

Nick Duvet | 23 September 2010 - 9:07pm

The plank spanker on the left with the...

... luxuriant moustache is military weapons expert Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. The guitarist on the right, in the purple crushed velvet loon pants, is Bob "The Bear" Hite lookalike Denny Dias. Becker is playing bass.

Thanks

Thank you Billy and Nick - a handsome bunch indeed.

Railroad Bill | 24 September 2010 - 9:10am

"A handsome bunch." Do you mean...

... me and Nick or Steely Dan?

Billybob Dylan | 25 September 2010 - 9:40pm

Swinging London, anyone?

Or maybe wobbling, wildly gyrating, then staring at the ceiling London by this time (with a large dollop of body paint). Pink Floyd, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, "Interstellar Overdrive"

Roy Harper

Stormcock his early masterpiece has side 2 opening with One Man Rock and Roll Band.

Earn enough for us
Big day
Another satellite

is this XTC doing a song about relationships and marriage from the perspective and styles of ..McCartney, Harrison and Lennon respectively?

I've always thought that was the case, but have never heard it confirmed.

That Dan lineup..

Was ever a Hepworthian "Relax, girls.. They're married" ever more merited?

A few more side 2-starters for your delectation...

David Bowie - "Warszawa" (from "Low") - kick-starts any rockin' party.
Brian Eno - "Here He Comes" (from "Before & After Science")
Congos - "Can't Come In" (from "Heart of the Congos")
Undertones - "When Saturday Comes" (from "The Positive Touch")
The Wailers - "Small Axe" (from "Burnin'")
Nick Drake - "Cello Song" (from "Five Leaves Left")
Tom Waits - "Rain Dogs" (from "Rain Dogs")
Curtis Mayfield - "Move on Up" (from "Curtis")

misteraitch has already mentioned Van the Man in this thread, and I've have to nominate the title track of "St. Dominic's Preview" as well.

Off the top of my head...

Here Comes The Sun/HJH (Abbey Road)
Born To Run/Bruce Springsteen (Born To Run)
Street Fighting Man/Stones (Beggars Banquet)

0
Seamus | 24 September 2010 - 10:18am

elizabeth my dear

Not for itself but because it heralds the crashing in of Manchester's own Abbey Road side 2: all the way from Sister to Resurrection, it's damn close to perfect...

Vorgongod | 24 September 2010 - 11:10am

Just listening to

Dr Feelgood's live album, Stupidity. Side 2, Track 1: Going Back Home.

0
drakeygirl | 24 September 2010 - 7:46pm

2 for now

The Police - Walking on the moon (Regatta de blanc)

Fabs - Within you, without you (Sergeant Pepper)

jackthebiscuit | 25 September 2010 - 9:31pm

Have an up arrow

for 'Within You Without You'. Top tune.

0
Steven C | 27 September 2010 - 9:45am

Mr Drake has just volunteered his submission

But that's probably too much information for you. In other news, he reckons the best Track 1 Side 2 offering is Back in Black from AC/DC's Back In Black.

0
drakeygirl | 25 September 2010 - 10:33pm

Ooh! Ooh! I've just thought of another gem!

The lovely "Persian Love", which opens side 2 of Holger Czukay's 1980 masterpiece, "Movies". Sublime. My favourite track of his, ever.
