The first dance

I'm getting married on Saturday - the nerves are just starting to kick in.
For our first dance we're having Button Up Your Overcoat by Sarah Vaughan. I'm not sure where it came from - I think it may have something to do with Tim Robbins singing it in The Sure Thing, my favourite actor playing one of my favourite characters in one of my favourite films. I just used to sing it a lot in a comedy fashion when we first started going out and it sort of stuck with us.
The short list included You Send Me by Sam Cooke and Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye but anything by Bob Dylan (it's his birthday on Saturday) was instantly vetoed.

What was your choice on the special day and why?

They didn't have such things when we got married...

....but this seems to be the gold standard these days. We were talking about it on the podcast only the other day. Fireworks start at 0.42.

All the best to the both of you. No pressure.

First Dance

We had a harp being played to great people at the reception but we couldn't face a first dance so got a Ceilidh band in and everyone danced together - we started them off going first etc. The band were great banjo twiddling, 'spit n' saw dust' kind of guys. Loads of fun watching your mates dance with your aunties and all the generations got involved-nice memories.

Good luck for Saturday - it'll be the fastest day of your life so try to take a moment and relax and take it all in. I couldn't tell you (and neither could my husband) what we ate for our meal in the reception, it could have been chips for all I know - apparently it was really nice whatever it was...

First Dance

My wife originally wanted Suspicious Minds but relented when I pointed out that the lyrics were not exactly the right starting point for our marriage.

We settled for Young Hearts Run Free which ironically does not possess laugh-a-minute lyrics either.

Subsequently I have thought Lady by Dennis Wilson would have been perfect

Have a fab day

Bette Midler - The Rose

My wifes choice.

Why? She's not interested in music!

Best Wishes...hope you are as happy as we are!?

Valentine - Steven Lindsay

After many a late night sprawled on the rug in front of the cd player with a bottle or 2 of wine, came to terms with the fact that all the songs we liked were miserable and about death or splitting up. This one wasn't. And its very good.

Stand By Me

Getting married in Singapore we did a more traditional Chinese wedding dinner, so we didn't do the "first dance". We made our entrance to the dinner to Ben E King's 'Stand By Me".

Whenever we go out for dinner on our anniversary and there's a group that moves around the tables doing requests, we always still ask for this.

Congratulations.

by Clif.... no, seriously, we had some friends playing all kinds of bluegrass and Beatles stuff on mandolin, guitar and upright bass during the proceedings.
After all the doings were over, we all retired to the cottage we'd rented where we had a barrel of Bath Ales' finest, and a stash of guitars. Beer was drunk, chords were strummed and riffs were attempted. No recorded music was hurt during the proceedings.

Have a great day, and cherish the memories.

Lets Get It On....

....was our first dance. Seemed suitable! When my wife(to be) came in the church we had 'fire in my heart' by Super Furry Animals playing. Which was pretty special..

advice?

As somebody else says above, the day will turn into a blur. Find a moment when you and wife can stop for a minute and take a breather and take it in. If you've a car taking you from the church/venue to the reception (if they're in separate places)that's a great place to catch your breath.

Good luck!

My songs

First dance was "At My Most Beautiful" by R.E.M. and even got my wife to walk down the aisle to Enya's "Watermark". She had to shift, mind you, because it only lasts just over two and a half minutes. Enya, you ask? Love that piece of music, always did always will.

i'm not married, and my choice of song might

explain this, but i'm still waiting to find the girl who'll gladly kick off her shoes and stomp along to Hotel Yorba by the White Stripes with me for the first dance...

ivan | 22 May 2008 - 2:24pm

dammit, you're making me wish I wasn't already married ;-)

great song. I hope you find the girl who'll stomp along with you.

we had a fabulous swing band playing (the frank sinatra version of) "For Once In My Life".

the funniest I've seen were my lovely mates whose first dance was to "Hooked on a Feeling". Ooga chagga ooga ooga etc.
