Film recommendations

I know we've done films a few times. but Patrick's recco of Persepolis prompted me to update my Lovefilm list - any recommendations? I like most things non-blockbuster/Disney. Especially French movies with people doing nothing but give each other smoldering looks in cafés over a tiny coffee and lots of fags.

Suggest something to update my list?

Not French...

...not a blockbuster either - although Jennifer Aniston's in it. I saw Office Space at 7 o'clock this morning (just checked and it's from 1999, but these days I can't bear going to the cinema and if you don't do that, then things tend to slip under the radar, so 8 years-ish is not an unusual catch-up period). Anyway, it's an occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, mildly satirical take on the workaday nightmare with an engaging cast and a wildly inappropriate and foul-mouthed hip-hop soundtrack. All that mo-foing before breakfast made me feel a little queasy, but if I'm laughing just after the dawn chorus then it must have something.

Knocked Up...

is a great film. Very funny. No need to write a review as many better ones can be found elsewhere. I'm generally not interested in *bonus* material, but the bonus stuff is very good too. Part of the bonus material is Loudon Wainwright III playing a couple of songs from the soundtrack cd live at McCabes Guitar Shop!

I'll second Office Space

a real slow burn pleasure, I saw it on a plane and was captivated. It's also a salutary lesson for anyone who has to "manage" any other people in their line of work; if you EVER find yourself saying anything that you could imagine Bill Lumberg coming out with, then you need to have a long conversation with yourself.

Juno

Having semi-deliberately missed it at the cinema, convinced that it wouldn't be my kind of thing, I saw it on a plane recently and concluded that it was rather wonderful.

Splendour

It's not French but I recommend "American Spendour" the true story of American comic writer Harvey Pekar. It's a film I never tire of, great jazz soundtrack, even if you're not into comic strips or jazz you'll probably like it. If you spend your days working in a boring office, you'll appeciate it more so!

Ghost World

Recommending films is a bit of a horses for courses exercise. For a reader of Word I'd suggest "Ghost World." It's years since I've seen it but Steve Buscemi's record collector character is so close to the bone its spooky. The film has a great, highly unusual soundtrack due to his presence.

The only false note in it is the casting of Scarlett Johansson as the lead girls best friend. She was unknown at the time (unknown to me that is)and while watching it I kept thinking "She's WAY too pretty for this role." She's out of place simply because she looks like a Goddess. She was born to walk down a red carpet. You'd think SOMEONE in that small town would have noticed her.

I can't figure out how ot put a photo here so click on this to see what I mean.

It's not my favourite film it's probably just that I saw the title American Splendour above that made me think of it. They were both taken from comic books.

...Hunchback of Notre Dame with Charles Laughton this afternoon - did I mention that I was a little behind with the films? Tremendous.

Grosse Point Blank

Even though it's been around for over ten years now, I'll say it everytime anybody asks me to recommend a film. If you haven't seen it then go and get it. John Cusack as an assassin who goes to his high school reunion. Great cast, fantastic soundtrack and some of the funniest dialogue ever.
