FIASCO ALERT! WORST POP BASED COMEDY EVER!

Bodhisattva's picture

Don't know how many of been following the debacle of Ben Elton's much hyped new Australian TV show "Live From Planet Earth" but it's worth pouring over the critical wreckage online - many suggest it is the worst TV show ever made. Anyway, the show has been pulled after just three weeks. It really was that rotten.

Written, produced and hosted by Ben it featured among many mis-fires a mini-sitcom that wondered what would happen if Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse all shared a flat together! Hang onto your hats it don't get more jaw dropping lousy than this! Vagina and poop jokes - Ben's got em!

Ben, ever bullish, has refused to acknowledge things were spinning out of control and listen here to a radio interview as he invokes both the Nazi's and Hamlet to explain the show's baffling "mixed reaction". The show was pulled the following week.

Heard this discussed on a

Heard this discussed on a recent Collings & Herrin. Ben Elton's career has followed an unusual arc and it's no surprise that he'd try a sketch like this; his books are often written around populist themes, Big Brother, Friends Reunited etc. so plucking the celebs du jour seems ti fit that pattern.

Personally, I'd rather see the very similar concept discussed by Adam and Joe; an apartment occupied by the various Bowie persona. Ziggy, Aladinsane, Pierrot, Let's Dance powder blue etc.

Having the idea is step one. Ben Elton seems to have lost step 2 - writing something funny to go with it. Step 3, having the balls to defend your work or at least admit you got it wrong without blaming the Nazis seems anathema.

He Spent Week Two

...using the opening monologue to attack his critics/damning Twitter which, as we know, can only be used to post negative things.

Hard to believe now

but Ben Elton doing stand-up at the Hammersmith Odeon sometime in the mid to late '80s was just just about the funniest thing I've ever seen.

What on Earth happened?

Let us not forget...

the Queen musical. Another artistic triumph.

The ongoing success of "We Will Rock You"

should be one of the wonders of the modern world.

It is unbridled cack with no artistc merit whatsoever. Just one big cash generating machine.

Why these people just cannot sit in their hotel room and stick Queen's Greatest Hits on, I'll never know.

There are clearly

enough people in the world who are curious enough to see it once (like you and I, for example).

Unfair thread title

I think the title of this thread is a bit unfair. Calling it the worst pop-based comedy ever doesn't go nearly far enough. Surely it must be one of the worst comedies, pop-based or no, ever?

And while we are on the subject, why are bad reviews (richly deserved if that clip is anything to go by) called mixed reviews? I bet there was nothing mixed about the reception to that dross.

Strewth, mate!

I'm not surprised that show's carked it.

3 minutes

I lasted 3 minutes.

I still really enjoy his novels though.

Coward!

At five minutes they start "riffing" on how big Beyonce's bowels must be.

I lasted 3' 50"

I'll tell you what it reminded me of — a rude version of one of those sketches they used to do right at the end of Crackerjack.

In fact, the presence of Peter Glaze would have improved it.

Once in a blue moon

Australian TV comes up with something really good like Kath and Kim. Meanwhile, this is about as good as it gets, unfortunately.

Good heavens to Betsy

That is something I would expect to see as a school project. It is utterly woeful; no redeeming features at all.
RIP
