Festive Pop Quiz Questions - Massive Help Please!

AndyPage's picture

Every year at work I do a Christmas Pop Quiz. It is pretty straightforward; one sheet of A4, usually the format is 10 lyrics, 10 anagrams and then a handful of quiz questions.

It is very mainstream - I usually stick to well known hits for the lyrics (many number ones), but I like to have something a bit more challenging (but not too obscure) in the questions at the end.

For instance:

What is the festive link between Genesis, Bros and Supergrass?

What is the only record that has been Christmas Number One twice in exactly the same version?

So, with this year's quiz in mind, does anyone have any suggestions for any more along similar lines please?

What's the musical link...

...between Ringo Starr, Cher, John Lennon & Sissy Spacek?

Both women's debut singles were Beatle tributes - Cher did "Ringo I Love You (Yeah Yeah Yeah)" & Sissy - under the name Rainbo - protested Lennon's Two Virgins nude sleeev with "John You've Gone Too Far This Time"

Bob | 7 December 2011 - 9:33am

Which cover version...

...of a Christmas classic makes everyone in the world want to die immediately upon hearing it?

Answer: Ronan Keating's "Fairytale Of New York".

(Don't listen to it. I beg you. Once you've heard it, you can never un-hear it.)

Bob | 7 December 2011 - 9:37am

Heard this in Tesco this morning

They were playing (very loudly I might add) what presumably is the latest compilation "The Worst Christmas Ever". The first few bars came on and I thought "at last a decent one" and then this bloke (Keating for it is him) started singing and all joy turned to stunned disbelief. Not sure who played the part of Kirsty MacColl, but she was equally notrite.

I promised myself to google it at lunchtime to find out who it was, but you've saved me the job.

Lead Singer

Is the Flying Pickets: Brian Hibberd played Doug in Corrie, don't know about his other roles.

Sportsman-Bing Crosby?

0
Richie B | 7 December 2011 - 1:52pm

Flying Pickets - Yes

Bing - don't think so, as I don't think White Christmas ever topped the charts in the UK. If it did, my apologies.

0
Freddie Owen | 7 December 2011 - 1:58pm

Eastenders too

He's from my home town.

Freddie Owen | 7 December 2011 - 10:36pm

An oldie but goldie

What was the last No.1 of the 70s and the first No.1 of the 80s ?

0
John_Black | 7 December 2011 - 1:25pm

Ah

Another Brick in the Wall part 2 by Pink Floyd and Brass in Pocket by the Pretenders.

0
milkybarnick | 7 December 2011 - 1:48pm

A pedant writes

You are indeed correct that "Brass In Pocket" replaced The Floyd at No.1 but technically "Another Brick In The Wall Part II" was the last No.1 of the 70s and first No.1 of the 80s.

0
John_Black | 7 December 2011 - 2:19pm

Pedantry accepted

I didn't read the question properly. Had it said the first new number one, I would have been correct.

Have now got the music from Shaun Keaveney's "Pendant's Corner" going through my head.

0
milkybarnick | 7 December 2011 - 2:33pm

Another Brick In The Wall

was Floyd's sixth UK single. What was their fifth?

(Festive link getting a bit tenuous though).

0
Sting Ono | 7 December 2011 - 10:49pm

Variation on a theme...

... you could ask what links Emile Ford & The Checkmates' "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?" Rolf Harris' "Two Little Boys" and Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall Part II"?

The answer being they were all the last No. 1s of one decade and the first No. 1s of the next.

0
Billybob Dylan | 8 December 2011 - 7:34pm

And one more.....

Arguably the most festive chart of all was in December 1974.
5 songs in the top 30 had the word Christmas in the title, including the number 1. Name those 5 yuletide hitmakers.

0
Freddie Owen | 7 December 2011 - 1:53pm

Hmmm

Mud_Lonely this Xmas
Wombles-Wombling Merry Xmas

erm...

erm...

Gilbert O'Sullivan? I'm not dreaming of a White Christmas

0
Richie B | 7 December 2011 - 2:03pm

3 out of the 5

Very good sir. Popping out now to do some Christmas shopping. All the answers later

0
Freddie Owen | 7 December 2011 - 10:31pm

Lyrics

Q. Which Christmas No1 included in the lyrics the title of the song that replaced it at no 1?

A. Bohemian Rhapsody was replaced with Mamma Mia.

0
JohnW | 7 December 2011 - 2:28pm

That's neat

.

0
Martin Simmonds | 7 December 2011 - 3:07pm

Let's ask the question the other way round

Which Christmas Number One included in the lyrics the title of previous Number One?

0
Inky Fingers | 7 December 2011 - 6:40pm

I've waited long enough

Nobody has profferred a suggestion so I give up! What's the answer?

0
JohnW | 8 December 2011 - 1:54pm

I was going to guess

Mud- Lonely This Christmas/Slade- Merry Xmas Everybody

but he (of Mud) says 'Merry Christmas, Darling' at the end doesn't he?

0
Tom | 8 December 2011 - 3:14pm

In 1959...

...the Christmas Number One was What You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For by Emile Ford and the Checkmates. It replaced What Do You Want by Adam Faith.

I know of two more Number Ones (but not Christmas Number Ones) whose lyric actually starts with the title of the following Number One.

0
Inky Fingers | 8 December 2011 - 10:54pm

I really love

your Tiger Feet :-)

0
Black Type | 7 December 2011 - 11:19pm

Q. Bohemian Rhapsody also

Q. Bohemian Rhapsody also included the title of another (later) number 1 in its lyrics: which one?

A. Figaro by Brotherhood of Man

0
Red Umpire | 9 December 2011 - 4:27pm

Which Christmas number 1 ...

Which Christmas number 1 ... was also a christmas number 2

at the same time?

0
jackthebiscuit | 7 December 2011 - 6:44pm

Was that..

...Answer Me in Frankie Laine's and David Whitfield's versions?

0
Inky Fingers | 7 December 2011 - 7:20pm

Answer Me

No sorry, it was the same song, no cover version, no remix trickery either.

0
jackthebiscuit | 7 December 2011 - 7:48pm

Hmmm.... at the same time, eh?

But in different countries?

0
Billybob Dylan | 7 December 2011 - 11:39pm

Same Song, different versions

Thought it was the great Hallelujah-off between young Master Buckley and warbling X-Factor winner Ms Burke....

0
jockblue | 8 December 2011 - 1:30pm

jackthebiscuit said...

... "same song, no cover version, no remix trickery either."

I'm still perplexed.

0
Billybob Dylan | 8 December 2011 - 3:23pm

Christmas number 1 & 2...

It was the Beatles - "I am the walrus."

B side of 1967 Xmas number 1 - "Hello goodbye"

A track on the "Magical mystery tour" EP, - Xmas 1967 number 2.

1
jackthebiscuit | 8 December 2011 - 3:58pm

Thank...

... you! That was driving me nuts. That's a good question - I'll have to remember that one.

0
Billybob Dylan | 8 December 2011 - 7:38pm

I was going to say Mr Hankey

the Christmas poo, but that only got to number 4...

1
milkybarnick | 8 December 2011 - 10:06am

Any of

Cliff's were definitely number twos

0

0
Wardour | 7 December 2011 - 8:05pm

Bear in mind it's a Christmas music quiz..

Since 1952 only two groups...

... have had three consecutive Christmas number ones. The Beatles did it in 1963, '64 and '65.

What other group achieved the same distinction?

0
Billybob Dylan | 7 December 2011 - 11:31pm

The Girls

of Spice.

0
Black Type | 7 December 2011 - 11:42pm

Bingo!

Give that man a banana!

0
Billybob Dylan | 7 December 2011 - 11:53pm

And for extra points..

Name the singles in each case.

I can't think of all of them, but I'm fairly sure that none of them are Christmassy records, which makes for an interesting twist.

0
Lenny Law | 8 December 2011 - 12:21am

Erm..

Two Become One
Too Much
Stop!

(that's a complete guess)

0
Tom | 8 December 2011 - 12:37am

B-Side

Didn't one of them have a cover of Christmas Wrapping on the B-Side? I got an email from the song's writer at the time saying "I don't know whether to cry or choose the colour of my new Rolls Royce".

1
JohnW | 8 December 2011 - 8:24am
Lenny Law | 8 December 2011 - 2:29pm

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions...

If anyone would like a copy please let me know.

By the way, does anyone know the answer to the first question here?

0
AndyPage | 17 December 2011 - 9:48am

Here's a guess

and I'm not spoiling it by Googling.

Phil Collins played drums on the original single of "Do They Know It's Christmas." Whichever Goss played the drums in Bros played them in the video of the Band Aid II remake (and, who knows, there might even be real drums on the record.)

Did the drummer from Supergrass play on the second remake, which I've never seen nor heard?

0
Wardour | 17 December 2011 - 5:11pm

What was the question again?

.

0
Sting Ono | 17 December 2011 - 6:59pm

Yes Wardour, that is it exactly

No-one got that t the time!

0
AndyPage | 18 December 2011 - 9:12am

Blimey.

Mind you, it did take some thinking about.
