Festivals next year

GASMAN's picture

Hi all

Thought I would make my first post a critically important one.

Which festivals do I go to next year?

We have all ( 2 families - including 6 teenagers) gone to the last 5 IOW festivals and had a great time. The trouble with Isle of Wight is that the organisers insist on selling ever larger numbers of tickets on a site that cant be made any bigger.

Last year it went from 50000 to close on 70000 when you count in all the sponsor tickets ect. This made getting around and more importantly seeing bands a nightmare

Heard good things about latitude, obviously we want a family good time all round
also need bands like PJ Harvey, muse, RHCP, Led Zep, The Cult, Blues Traveller, Hayseed Dixie - oh and some others for the 16 - 19 year olds

Hi GASMAN and welcome

I have the same dilemma next year, when I've a huge Glastonbury-shaped hole to fill.

I get two festival-shaped holes each year I'm allowed to fill by my long suffering wife, who would rather stick pins in her eyes than accompany me.

One of those is likely to be filled by Latitude, which certainly fulfils the family requirements and will be ideal for your kids, who can join all the similarly-aged East Anglian graduants of the local sixth form colleges who turn up en masse.

I suspect for the bigger bands you mention above, you'll have to brave TitP, V, Reading or Leeds. Wild horses wouldn't get me to any of those, but whatever floats your boat...

IoW, I understand, is moving its dates to the end of June, setting itself up as the direct replacement for Glastonbury, but given your comments above, and the horror stories I've heard about getting off the island after the festival ends, I'll be giving that a wide berth too.

I've done Cropredy and Cornbury as well, but they might be a bit genteel for your tastes. I'm inclined to give Green Man or End of the Road a go next year, depending upon lineup. I quite like the idea of Bestival, but the fancy dress puts me off...

2 families

6 teenagers = Reading. I've been twice now with my boys (they were 13, 17 & 20 the first time)and we've found something for everyone. But and it's a big indie sized but is that if boys in skinny jeans playing guitars really isn't your thing then at times there will be no escape, having said that in two visits I have seen, The Killers, Rage Against the Machine, Madness, Elbow, Muse, Feeder, Biffy Clyro, Metallica, on the main stage and too many others in the NME tent to remember. I'm interested in the line up this year.

The Green Man Festival

I've thought of giving this a go next year. Meant to be small and friendly and usually has a good line up.

I've been to the last 6!

As you can probably gather from that, I think it's ace.

Latitude and Cornbury

Cornbury have just confirmed June 29-July 1 as the dates for 2012.

I will be saving up

and going to SXSW in 2013. Went this year and in 2008 - 5 days of music in decent venues with proper sanitation, good bars, party atmosphere, close enough to stage to actually see the bands and even meet them afterwards. Plus you get to go back to your hotel every morning around 2, stay in bed til eleven and start again around 1pm. Oh and you get to see leggy Texan girls in mini skirts and cowboy boots. What's not to like?
