Fela Kuti

Steve Turner's picture

Help, please. I am interested in getting a good Fela Kuti cd - specifically in his more funk orientated era. Please can anyone point me in the right direction?

Yep

Buy the Music is the Weapon compilation. Two really good CDs, and a truly great DVD documentary, one which is worth the admission price by itself.

And on emusic if you have it, if not then

it's exactly this type of stuff you need it for, you'll find Music is the Weapon of the Future, No Agreement and Live with Africa 70 and Ginger Baker. All stupendous value at only 3/4 downloads each.

fela

most popular would be shakara featuring lady but better is black president featuring ITT and colonial mentality

album with ginger is not as good as album with american funk/jazz vibes player roy ayers.

the earlier the album the stronger the funk ( james brown) influence.

africa 70 band better than subsequent band egypt 80- avoid army arrangemment produced by bill lasswell

look for albums with tony allen on drums he is the beat in afro beat

You're in for a treat

My favourite Fela set is Dog Eat Dog from No Agreement - amazing stuff, but the other side of that is great as well. You can't go wrong with Zombie and Music is the Weopon of the Future, they're all on Emusic I think and a great bargain since each set costs one credit and they're all about 15 minutes long.
If you like that then check out Tony Allen, Afrobeat Disco. For something funky try Geraldo Pino or Orlando Julius, for something more jazzy give Mulatu Astatke or Mahmoud Ahmed a try (both on the Ethiopiques comps) and for some great modern afrobeat you can't fail with either The Daktaris or Chicago Afrobeat Project.
But this is the finest afrobeat album you'll ever hear - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kings-Urban-Groove-1972-1980/dp/B00078805M/ref=s...

If you're after his more funk oriented material

then Zombie, He Miss Road and Expensive Shit are the best 3 to go with as far as i'm concerned.

Zombie is quite possibly the best song he ever did.

Let us know how you get on...

I started out with the compilation I mention above and now have close to 50 albums. At one point I listened to Fela every day for at least 18 months.

Thanks Fraser

Weapon is bloody awesome and well worth the investment. Dont think it will be the last I buy but doubt I will get to 50.
