Favourite Christmas song?

JohnW's picture

I recall suggesting back in dreary December that a Favourite Christmas song thread in April would be a good idea so here it is, mainly prompted by the possibility that, along with the Gary Glitter christmas song that doesn't get played on the radio anymore, the Phil Spector songs may not feature from now on.
So, without the stress of impending Christmas to cloud judgement, what's your favourite Christmas song?
I think I still pick "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses.

Shonen Knife...

...Space Christmas

'Ring Out Solstice Bells' by Jethro Tull, for me...

...I daresay someone has put their TOTP performance of this on youtube (the one where, having actually appeared on the show, their record went DOWN the following week). But I can't be bothered looking for it just now...

I'm with you on The Waitresses...

... a tremendous record, and my fastest ever Ebay transaction (bought the white vinyl 7" single at 10.00 AM, it turned out the seller only lived down the road, so I picked it up 2 hours later.)

As the years go on, Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" has outstripped "Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody" as my other seasonal ditty of choice, though I am also the only person in the world who seems to enjoy The Greedies' " A Merry Jingle," and Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is the only record of hers I can listen to...

"It's A Big Country"

by Davitt Sigerson. Have no idea who he is, but it's on a compilation album with, among others, the aforementioned Waitresses song. Which I, too, like a lot. In fact the whole album is pretty good.

I also really like The Dickies' version of "Silent Night".

Keep it special

Don't even think about investigating Davitt Sigerson. I love "It's a Big Country" as well so I bought a whole album... dear me!

Thanks for the warning!

I must confess that while writing my previous comment I did wonder what else he had done and that maybe I should look into it…

IThat's a shame

"It's a Big Country" is my favourite Christmas song and I assumed the rest of his material would be as good. I may still investigate. He's an interesting character: former music journalist, producer (David and David's "Boom Town") and now a novelist.

Davitt is no brocolli!

I like to think I'm quite open minded so I thought I'd re-evaluate, after all I didn't used to like brocolli. I've got one of his albums and Spotify has the other

So I thought I'd give it a try. I'm afraid I didn't make it to the end... in fact I didn't make it to the end of most of the tracks (but in my defence, they are all quite long).

Stop The Cavalry/Jona Lewie

Never fails to get me right *there*

Jan & Dean

I love the fact that, despite me including a topical reference to the Spector verdict and therefore allowing the thread to be legitimately hijacked, this has managed to be a discussion in April about Christmas songs. I'm already preparing my "Favourite Jan & Dean track" post for a December outing!

Thanks for Christmas

by the Three Kings, another XTC disguise - sounds exactly how you'd expect a XTC Christmas single to sound.

The Wilder Brothers & The Ken Noath Orchestra

'I Wanna Goat for Christmas' backed with '(When Santa Comes Down) The Ole Chimney' - now there's a Christmas 45 that's worth its weight in sugar canes.

And in memory of the recently departed John Vincent (local radio legend) I would like to nominate his 1969 festive smash, ''Ow Ya Goin' Santa Claus' - "Santa brought a car for John, a doll for little Sue/ Valmai got a new Hills hoist, a plastic apron too/I unwrapped my parcel - to see just what I got/ There was a brand new Esky, now me coldies won't get hot." Sheer genius.

Both 7" dominated the December 25 turntable after my old man had sunk a few meads.

The Waitresses

I am with John W. I think Christmas wrapping by the Waitresses is the best christmas song I can remember.

I honestly think that one of the reasons it always sounds so good is that it has never actually been a major hit, so it doesnt (in my opinion) get played to death on the radio every December.

A couple of years ago, the Daily star gave away a free Christmas song CD, on it was the full length ( showing my age here)
12 inch version, Bliss !!
