Fancy a pint? *Friday 22nd Jan at the Lamb in London*

Hannah's picture

Well, we've already been vaguely chucking around dates for the next meet, so I thought I might as well be efficient and give it its own thread.

Suggested date so far is Friday 22nd January. How does that work for you?

Islington seemed to work well for everyone last time, although we'd definitely want to meet up somewhere other than the Glassworks. Any suggestions?

Apologies to all non-London (and indeed non-England) Word bloggers out there... maybe we could have a series of simultaneous drinks round the country with satellite link-ups... :-)

So. Who else is up for it?

Hannah xxx

(And am I going to be the only "Word Bird" again, I wonder?)

EDIT: Hoorah, we have a date for Word bloggers who can get to London.

Friday 22nd January it is, by popular vote.
At the Lamb*, Lamb's Conduit Street (thank you, Retro Man)
It sounds good, doesn't it?: http://www.pubs.com/pub_details.cfm?ID=203

Google map here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=WC1N+3LZ&sll...

I'll look into booking a private area or private room, and I'll start another thread nearer the time to remind everyone, but for now STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING, RIGHT THIS INSTANT, AND GO STICK THE 22ND JAN ON THE DIARY!

Hooray! Looking forward to it. See you there.
Hannah xx

*although it does still have to pass Twangothan's rigorous QCing in advance...

Look forward to seeing you! xx

Is there any chance of doing

Is there any chance of doing this before Christmas ?. I'm only saying as the funds might be a bit low in January just a thought.

0
Randlepmcmurphy | 18 November 2009 - 10:15pm

We did discuss that on another thread...

the overall feeling was that everyone's going to be a bit busy now before christmas to fit something in.

anyway, I'm a cheap date, mine's a tap water!!!

0
Hannah | 19 November 2009 - 10:18pm

Sadly

ill-health mitigates against me schlepping across London whilst it's still bleedin' taters out. (If this were a carry On film, my name would be Dicky Ticker - nuff said.) I would've loved to have been there, but hope you all have an ace time nonetheless.

ps I would've been the tall fat ginger bloke in a Hold Steady T-shirt with a couple of days' stubble. Relax ladies etc....

0
Paul Holmes | 22 January 2010 - 4:54pm

just a thought

- would it make sense to have it slightly more centrally (W1/WC1)
Although do appreciate that it made it easier for Lord Ellen, Fraser et al to pop-in being closer to Word Towers in N1.

And also Friday may be a tough night for some to get out on. How about a Thursday? Only one day to get through if following day's hangover is a bad one

0
Sheev | 18 November 2009 - 10:23pm

W1 or WC1

With you on that Sheev. W4 even better of course...

0
Occam | 18 November 2009 - 10:58pm

Any Worders

in Cardiff??

0
eddie g | 18 November 2009 - 11:08pm

Nope.

From Swansea. I'm sure there's a few other South Walians on here as well.

0
Steve Hill | 19 November 2009 - 10:41am

I suggested 22 Jan

but happy to fit in with the majority if we can find a date when people are free, which I suspect may be a problem. Agree more central - I am very fond of the Cross keys just off Covent Garden - excellent beer, old Beatles and other bands' posters on the walls, no plonkers!

http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/22/2264/Cross_Keys/Covent_Garden

0
Twangothan | 18 November 2009 - 11:24pm

Sounds good to me

Couldn't make the last one - plenty of notice is a good thing for me.

0
Leedsboy | 18 November 2009 - 11:37pm

Sounds great

Would really like to make this one - can get to anywhere in London area, pretty much.

0
Specs_Beard | 19 November 2009 - 1:20am

Is it possible

to hold this event in a small village in Berkshire?

Far more convenient for everyone. Well, for some people. Well, for me.

;-)

3
SirTerence | 19 November 2009 - 1:36am

We could do a Berkshire/Hampshire

borders rehearsal.

0
Leedsboy | 19 November 2009 - 12:32pm

Royals fan here...

I'm in Berkshire too, Windsor is a good place for boozers, although I live on the wrong side of the tracks (or the M4).

I'm interested to join the meet-up in London, either day would be OK at the moment but I won't know until closer to the date.

Will there be any people there who like noisy music? I must confess I can't talk a lot about Folk, Prog, Bob Dylan or Richard Thompson so I wouldn't want to be the party-pooper!

0
Retro Man | 20 November 2009 - 10:56am

Don't worry

Last time all we did was slag off Heppo, at least while the Word lot were there. Arf arf.

0
Twangothan | 20 November 2009 - 1:30pm

Do you think Mr. Hepworth would make an appearance?

Does he have one of those celebrity after-dinner speaking Agents where we can book him up for the evening?

0
Retro Man | 20 November 2009 - 3:09pm

Rumour has it

he's putting a century behind the bar for drinks.

0
Twangothan | 20 November 2009 - 3:22pm

Request

Near Piccadilly Line would suit me.

0
Lucas Hare | 19 November 2009 - 8:46am

Couldn't make last one, would like to try and make it this time!

W1/Central is best for me, but frankly anywhere on the tube will do, and pre-Christmas sounds good, any evening other than Wednesdays (have to pick up the FPO from evening class!)

0
Metal Mickey | 19 November 2009 - 8:55am

I'm in

January would be better for me. The FPO needs that kind of notice to process my application for attendance but I can fast-track one for December.

Central Smoke also better for me too. The Cross Keys would be ideal in fact.

0
Beezer | 19 November 2009 - 10:27am

Yep..

Anywhere within an hour of the shining Manhattan of Croydon:- December can be a bit plagued with the "Amateur Drinkers" who only visit the pub in the run up to Xmas...

0
Richie B | 19 November 2009 - 12:11pm

I'm in

Central London would seem sensible.

0
Martin Simmonds | 19 November 2009 - 12:47pm

Raise me?

Someone wanna raise me on 22nd Jan? I am happy with any date but it would be good to get on in the diary. Hannah, you are showing leadership here - waddaya think?

0
Twangothan | 19 November 2009 - 3:22pm

Similarly...

Personally I don't mind what weeknight it is, it makes no odds to me.

But, yes, we do need to get something in the diary sooner rather than later... Friday seems like a good choice, Sheev also makes a good case for a Thursday.

So, I'm going to suggest two dates at the bottom of this thread, Thursday 21st Jan and Friday 22nd Jan and let's have a vote. Majority wins.

And your venue suggestion sounds like a good'un!

0
Hannah | 19 November 2009 - 10:05pm

Anywhere near N17....

To keep it "real" !

0
Six Dog | 19 November 2009 - 3:31pm

Come on you Midlands based Massive members

note to self - will have to work on the chant/title for a whole number of reasons......

We're not going to leave it all to the Cockneys are we??

0
el toro calvo grande | 19 November 2009 - 3:48pm

Apples and pears, me old china

etc etc

0
Hannah | 19 November 2009 - 10:12pm

I visit Birmingham regularly

I'll check my diary and see when I'm going to be there - but as I'm there working, it would be during the week rather than on a Friday.

Is that any good ?

0
el hombre malo | 21 November 2009 - 12:32pm

I work

about 2 mins walk from the Wellington and other city centre watering holes, so weekdays are fine for me, if not preferable.

0
el toro calvo grande | 23 November 2009 - 11:49am

That was quick

I'm unlikely to make as I live in darkest Essex, but I've just looked up the Cross Keys on Google Earth out of curiosity. It looks like everyone's there already and I'll have some catching up to do.

0
Gatz | 19 November 2009 - 4:06pm

VOTE NOW!

Right. Come on chaps, let's choose a night. Vote now or hold your peace, majority wins.

Thursday 21st January
OR
Friday 22nd January

any preference?

And Mr Twangothan's suggested venue sounds like the winner, lots of approval for it above. It's the Cross Keys in Covent Garden: http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/22/2264/Cross_Keys/Covent_Garden

EDIT: don't vote here, vote further down with Occam's smart arrows. Hurrah!

0
Hannah | 19 November 2009 - 10:24pm

I'm a Friday kinda guy

I'll be the spod in the cheap suit. No dress down Fridays for me.

0
Beezer | 19 November 2009 - 10:26pm

What time

are Archie V and Middlerabbit turning up?

*whistles*

2
DougieJ | 19 November 2009 - 10:14pm

Here's where the arrows can help surely

Up arrow here for Thursday 21 January

14
Occam | 23 November 2009 - 10:47am

And here

For Friday 22 Jaunary

23
Occam | 19 November 2009 - 10:19pm
Hannah | 19 November 2009 - 10:22pm

I can do either

So have clicked both...otherwise it looks like noone is coming!

0
Twangothan | 20 November 2009 - 1:28pm

Only flaw is

without the odd comment, the thread disappears, so it'd be great if it could get the occasional nudge. Unless of course there really are only 6 people who fancy a pint

0
Occam | 20 November 2009 - 10:29am

A comment to keep it going

I've arrowed Friday. I can do Thursday, but prefer the idea of starting the weekend with a massive word.

0
Carl Parker | 20 November 2009 - 1:51pm

I'm in

Missed the last one, so should be ok for this one - Thursday or Friday is good for me

0
Mondo | 20 November 2009 - 10:46am

All a bit London centric for

All a bit London centric for me, who says media land is insular? I am based in Sheffield so will give this one a miss. Enjoy you flat beer and 'air kisses';)

0
woodface | 20 November 2009 - 10:58am

Obvious solution

Organise one in Sheffield.

0
Theo Zoffrok | 20 November 2009 - 11:34am

Really? I could do that,

Really? I could do that, where would I be without such suggestions.

0
woodface | 20 November 2009 - 6:02pm

*mwah mwah* ;-)

Sheffield's ace, I used to live there and love the place. Go on, organise your own gathering!

0
Hannah | 20 November 2009 - 12:02pm

Are you suggesting

that because we live in London but many others don't that we shouldn't meet up?
I don't think any of us readers who turned up the other week at the Glassworks are media types either.

0
Carl Parker | 20 November 2009 - 1:53pm

Not at all, I am just a

Not at all, I am just a chippy northerner, enjoy your evening.

0
woodface | 20 November 2009 - 6:00pm

Count me in

I'm not booked up as far as January so can do either day. Just start a thread near the time to remind me!

0
ganglesprocket | 20 November 2009 - 11:46am

I would love to come over ...

...I'm going to look into it, flights from Belfast and accomodation etc. I'll let you all know.

1
Iainso | 20 November 2009 - 11:49am

I'll be there

Prefer Friday, though Thursday works reasonably well for me too.

0
Theo Zoffrok | 20 November 2009 - 1:24pm

After missing and attending the last one

(long story, basically I'm an idiot with no observation skills), I'm keen as mustard to go to this one.

Problem being, I start a new job after Christmas which means I won't be working in London any more. Mind you, I'm sure I can hop on a train and make it if there's a decent turn-out

0
Joe R | 20 November 2009 - 3:30pm

I need to discuss

you putting the words "Landfill" and "Indie" in that Soundtrack of Our Lives review Joe...!

edit: Sorry. just kidding...that's not a case of internet bullying.
Christ, I just realized - I hope I am not going to get taken to task for anything bad I've ever written about Elbow on here...!

0
Retro Man | 20 November 2009 - 4:39pm

Ahem

and I quote...

a couple of insubstantial, forgettable tracks creep in which veer dangerously close to ‘landfill indie’ territory

So I didn't quite call it landfill indie - am I excused? :)

0
Joe R | 20 November 2009 - 5:09pm

A pint will make it alright

I guess!

0
Retro Man | 20 November 2009 - 5:26pm

Thank you very much

I'll have a Pride since you're offering!

0
Joe R | 20 November 2009 - 5:36pm
Retro Man | 20 November 2009 - 5:39pm

So do I

...having recommended it....I'll make a quality control visit shortly before the agreed date, otherwise I won't sleep the night before.

0
Twangothan | 20 November 2009 - 5:45pm

Yes, please sample a pint of all they have

available and report back here the next morning.

0
Retro Man | 20 November 2009 - 5:58pm

It's a sh*t job

but someone has to do it.

0
Twangothan | 20 November 2009 - 6:23pm

Quality control

Twang, if you don't want to drink alone, let me know. I should be able to attend a pre meet meeting.

0
Carl Parker | 20 November 2009 - 7:20pm

Sounds excellent

Cheers Carl - a warm up! Soon as we have a date we can arrange the quality control visit! Of course this is not exclusive, anyone else who wants to test the beer in advance is welcome!

0
Twangothan | 20 November 2009 - 8:45pm

Indeed not

Allcomers welcome. I could exceed my 20 units that week. ;)

0
Carl Parker | 20 November 2009 - 11:10pm

Alright

I'll help too!

0
Beezer | 20 November 2009 - 11:15pm

Me too...

have to check their sparkling water's up to scratch ;-)

0
Hannah | 21 November 2009 - 12:08am

Let me know

When the QC fixture is on. You may need Health & safety there to check you on your bike.

0
Lunaman | 22 November 2009 - 4:40pm

Not another Trains,planes & automobiles

Joe - We hope to see you. Maybe we should send you some sort of tracker device! Not another train journey!

0
Lunaman | 22 November 2009 - 2:09pm

At the moment

I'm a hardened commuter, getting at least 10 trains a week, often more, but that will all change in the New Year. I'll definitely do what I can to make this one though; I'll probably do an Eamonn Forde-esque train Twitter-cast (currently christened "The Chuffercast) too!

2
Joe R | 22 November 2009 - 4:02pm

Great idea

I'd love to be there and fail to keep up with the witty banter. Unfortunately, that's performance week for my am-dram group and I'd be missed on stage - there would be some very long pauses.

Hope you have a good evening and I'll try to come next time.

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 20 November 2009 - 3:45pm

You should come anyway

I thought in am-dram, long pauses weren't bad, just "Pinter-esque"

0
Joe R | 20 November 2009 - 5:37pm

Big 5-0

I'm well up for this. You can help me celebrate turning 50! Looking forward to meeting Sheev after our minor spat a while back :-)

0
thecolonel | 20 November 2009 - 7:31pm

Yep, count me in +1

have voted for the Friday because we live in Kent and will probably have to stay the night. Train comes into Charing Cross so Cross Keys works top for me.

(ps. and I'm another word bird)

0
kbhr | 20 November 2009 - 9:34pm

Woo!

That makes two of us...

0
Hannah | 21 November 2009 - 12:06am

Blimey

This is going to be a top do. Roll on end of Jan or whenever it is!!

0
Twangothan | 21 November 2009 - 1:11am

Is this

an open invite, like, or is there a suitably arcane code or intricate handshake which you have to reveal first?

0
Paul Holmes | 21 November 2009 - 1:14am

Errr

the secret code is being here and being thirsty. Everyone welcome! More merrier etc etc.

0
Twangothan | 21 November 2009 - 1:16am

lamplighters

Mark Ellen = Control
David Hepworth = George Smiley
Fraser Lewry = Toby Esterhase

? = Bill Haydon

about 10 people will get this reference! Dammit! I'm going to start another thread anyway...;-)

2
DougieJ | 21 November 2009 - 1:24am

You're welcome to both

the Quality Control scouting mission (see above) and the main event.

0
Carl Parker | 21 November 2009 - 12:11pm

Danke gents

I may yet hobble up there

0
Paul Holmes | 24 November 2009 - 5:58am

Satellite link-up

maybe we could have a series of simultaneous drinks round the country with satellite link-ups

Hello Riga!

0
DougieJ | 21 November 2009 - 1:16am

Would we call it a ......

Pod crawl!!

I'll get my coat.

Count me in for the meet up. Friday sounds good to me. Sorry I was so late getting on this . I must of been away for a day or two.

0
Lunaman | 22 November 2009 - 2:13pm

hooray!

Glad you're up for it, I was starting to wonder where you'd gone! See ya there.

1
Hannah | 22 November 2009 - 11:27pm

Looks like Friday

But just in case it's getting more tricky to find the arrows, I've inserted a picture above to help locate them.

0
Occam | 23 November 2009 - 10:48am

I was sore to have missed the last one

Am up for Friday 22nd and would even be up for a pre-Christmas Friday (4th & 11th are still free) keep the comment thread going so it returns. The Cross Keys sounds like the best venue.

0
Vorgongod | 23 November 2009 - 10:59am

At the risk of being ridiculed..

.. and because I'm shy, I have to ask how do you recognise each other ?

Do you have a nomiated colour of carnation in the lapel ? Or just spot the baldy blokes (and 1 attractive young lady!) downing bitter in faded King Crimson tour Tshirts ?

0
the mvps | 23 November 2009 - 5:41pm

Avoiding confusion

There was a little confusion last time so I suggest that we let the bar staff know we're there and if you can't see us ask. There will be a copy of the Word around too I guess.

0
Lunaman | 23 November 2009 - 6:26pm

One thing I'm not doing is....

Growing a bloody beard!

0
Lunaman | 23 November 2009 - 6:27pm

Beard

I have grown a beard since the first meet, but it may well be gone by the next one.
One big clue, assuming he rides it again, is Twang's folding bike which he had leaning against the bar.

0
Carl Parker | 23 November 2009 - 11:18pm

Helmet

I could wear my cycling helmet. That would be easy - look for the group with the plonker wearing a cycling helmet inside the pub. Hmmmm. On second thoughts.....

0
Twangothan | 23 November 2009 - 11:46pm

I think....

it may have been leaning against the bar all the way home last time!

0
Lunaman | 24 November 2009 - 4:39pm

Me neither

0
Hannah | 24 November 2009 - 12:14am

Doh!

Too late for me...

0
Beezer | 24 November 2009 - 2:18pm

Perhaps

...a newcomer to the pub could yell out 'unadvisably'.
Those already in place could reply with an irritable 'inadvisedly'.
Then everyone could do the special Word dance (currently a work in progress).

5
Uncle Monty | 25 November 2009 - 2:40pm

How about…

We each wear a green carnation?
What could possibly go wrong?

1
David Rothon | 25 November 2009 - 3:02pm

btw

I am up for this meet up. I voted by haven't commented yet. Thought I probably should.

and I'm assuming the answer to mvps question is everyone holds a word magazine in their hands.

0
goosefat101 | 23 November 2009 - 6:13pm

Or a Daily Mail?

Just kidding...

1
Occam | 23 November 2009 - 6:31pm

Just nudging the thread to keep it alive

*nudge nudge*

0
Hannah | 24 November 2009 - 1:48pm

Hold those nudges

This thread is going to pay out soon, I can feel it.

0
Beezer | 24 November 2009 - 3:58pm

Thursday 21 Jan at Cross Keys Covent Garden - time?

Good choice - let's hope 'The Word' has a decent cover that month. Can you imagine if it was a nude photo of Pugwash on the cover and us all walking into the bar carrying that?

Can Mr Ellen please ensure that we have a cover that gives us all street cred, kudos for 'The Word', and ensures that we are all taken seriously by the Cross Keys staff. We don't really want blokes in dresses, ballet dancers with beards or a large naked arse on the cover that month!

0
Baskerville Old Face | 24 November 2009 - 4:31pm

Wasn't it Friday 22?

Or have I not read it properly again!

0
Lunaman | 24 November 2009 - 5:45pm

nope, the date's still not been decided

But Friday's in the lead. I'll give it another few days before I declare it closed (I'm turning into a right old bossy boots)

0
Hannah | 24 November 2009 - 6:15pm

Arse on the front...

What, Morrissey again?...I'll be wearing clothes...perhaps Band t-shirts might be the way forward...my giveaway is a close resemblance to Suggs.

0
Richie B | 24 November 2009 - 5:08pm

Kevin Rowland maybe?

They could use one of the shots that was thought to be a bit too risqué for the cover of 'My Beauty' perhaps.

0
Occam | 24 November 2009 - 5:59pm

how big is this place?

It looks like there's going to be a crowd. I'll tag along, deffo.

0
Captain Underpants | 25 November 2009 - 2:51pm

Quite small and narrow

if I remember correctly - it will be packed on a Friday night that's for sure.

0
Retro Man | 25 November 2009 - 3:34pm

It is on the small side

any other suggestions? But nowhere neon lights or bangy music please - want to be able to talk to each other...

I've never been in there when it has been no elbow room style packed. We can always move on if required.

0
Twangothan | 25 November 2009 - 4:01pm

How about the Phoenix Artist Club, Charing X Rd?

Usually plenty of room early-evening and it's a great place. In theory you have to be a member to get in after 8pm, but if it's booked as a party of people that might not be necessary.
http://www.phoenixartistclub.com/aboutus.html

0
David Rothon | 25 November 2009 - 4:54pm

That place looks good David

especially if an area can be reserved.

0
Retro Man | 25 November 2009 - 6:12pm

Love the Phoenix!

Gets my vote!

0
Metal Mickey | 25 November 2009 - 6:15pm

But.......

......it's not a pub. Is there beer? Looks like a nice place, but it is not a pub. Just sayin'....

0
Twangothan | 25 November 2009 - 7:18pm

Quality control visit

We could go to both venues and decide which is suitable. It looks like a 10 minute walk between the two places.

0
Carl Parker | 25 November 2009 - 7:24pm

Feeling the need

...for a commando visit to the Cross Keys in advance anyway. All this discussion of drinking has got me in the mood. I am on the the 21/22 (whichever and wherever it is) but anyone fancy a swifty next week/week after, say Thursday? NB - this is not hijacking the original one, more a rehearsal...

0
Twangothan | 25 November 2009 - 7:37pm

Next week / Week after

Twang, did you tell me you worked near London Bridge (or was it someone else)? If so how about a venue around there as I pass through on my way home.

0
Carl Parker | 26 November 2009 - 1:38pm

Tower Hill

I work right by Tower Hill - 10 mins down the embankment from LB. There's a good Fullers pub here - the Hung Drawn and Quartered? Not sure what there is down the embankment, not really been out round here.

0
Twangothan | 26 November 2009 - 2:27pm

I'm flexible

If you can think of anyway on your bike route close to a station I'm sure I could find my way there.

0
Carl Parker | 26 November 2009 - 11:59pm

It's not been hijacked...

it's been Twango'ed! ;-)

0
Hannah | 26 November 2009 - 2:43pm

There is certainly beer…

… quite a few lagers on tap (and decent ones) but I should warn you they don't do 'proper' ales. As (usually) an ale drinker myself that's a minus, but I still like it there.

0
David Rothon | 25 November 2009 - 7:31pm

No decent bitter

is a killer for me. I am sure it is nice but not the place for a booze up, for me at least.

0
Twangothan | 25 November 2009 - 7:53pm

What about a pub

with a private room?

My favourite is The Lamb on Lamb's Conduit Street. Great ales, good historic pub in a nice street between Russell Square and Holborn.
They have an upstairs room taht you can hire cheaply for about £40.00.

http://www.pubs.com/pub_details.cfm?ID=203

Anyway, just a thought - but I would be happy with either Phoenix or Cross Keys.

0
Retro Man | 25 November 2009 - 8:30pm

There you go

great pub, good beer, a pound each in the pot and Mr Hepworth can make up the difference.

Hannah, make the call!

0
Captain Underpants | 25 November 2009 - 8:39pm

Of course

we'd have to send Twang round to do a quality control check first...

0
Retro Man | 25 November 2009 - 9:21pm

Yeah, that does sound pretty good!

Like the idea of a private room very muchly. Should make it an awful lot easier to find each other! And if the drinks meet with Mr Twangothan's approval then that's even better. Everyone's a winner!

1
Hannah | 26 November 2009 - 1:04am

The Lamb

It's been ages since I went there but it was excellent then. Will schedule mini CG crawl/quality check shortly before the event!

0
Twangothan | 26 November 2009 - 9:43am

Good for Joe R

We might get to meet him this time!

0
Lunaman | 26 November 2009 - 10:48am

OI!

I could be offended by that. I'm not, obviously, and I'm sure in my own special way, I'll manage to not spot everyone.

0
Joe R | 26 November 2009 - 8:29pm

Looking forward

to catching up Joe.

0
Lunaman | 27 November 2009 - 9:38am

Yep

The Lamb is indeed a top pub (complete with proper beer).

0
David Rothon | 26 November 2009 - 8:48am

The Lamb

There is also an area to the back of the pub (left side of the bar as you go in) that is semi-private, they might reserve that free of charge.

0
Retro Man | 26 November 2009 - 10:44am

Ahhhh, great place to drink

Somewhere I've performed QC tests on MANY times!

0
Hannah | 25 November 2009 - 7:36pm

Just realised

I'm going to have to walk up to a group of strangers in a pub and say "Hello. I'm Captain Underpants."

Pleasepleaseplease let it be the right group.

1
Captain Underpants | 25 November 2009 - 4:14pm

and if it isn't the right group...

pleasepleaseplease let the conversation be captured on video!

1
Hannah | 25 November 2009 - 4:47pm

You could always ask Fraser

for a User Name Amnesty (good title for a new Fall album that.)

1
Retro Man | 25 November 2009 - 4:48pm

Which begs the question

Have we chosen the right spot? I mean, it'll be great to meet up, but somewhat less so if we can't actually congregate together. Maybe Thursday or somewhere else would be better?

0
Occam | 25 November 2009 - 3:46pm

still think we should go with the date that most people vote for

but maybe we do need to think about the venue.

right. everyone meet at mine, 8pm. I'll get the kettle on. ;-)

0
Hannah | 25 November 2009 - 4:48pm

I love the fact

that "we MUST meet for a beer HERE on THIS day at THIS time" seems to now be evolving into something less definitive and crippled with doubt.

Thai is just so, like, Wordlike......

3
el toro calvo grande | 25 November 2009 - 5:37pm

RIGHT! WE HAVE A DATE! AND VENUE!!

0
Hannah | 26 November 2009 - 1:03pm

Sounds good

Perfect location for me. Just a quick word with the FPO is all I need.

0
Lucas Hare | 26 November 2009 - 1:36pm

I'm in.........!

the FPO license stamp and visa came through. Phew.

0
Six Dog | 27 November 2009 - 11:52am

Are you saying...

...that you needed to apply for this visa nearly two months ahead of travel?

0
Fraser Lewry | 27 November 2009 - 11:59am

Mr. Vorgongod WILL attend

But like Captain Underpants above, I fear the utterly CRAP monicker I (drunkenly, though that's NO excuse) chose when joining this good old friend of a forum may see me shunned, ridiculed and, quite understandably, beaten up.

0
Vorgongod | 26 November 2009 - 1:23pm

We'll go in together

In uniform.

Photobucket

0
Captain Underpants | 26 November 2009 - 3:08pm

I saddled myself to goosefat101

so long ago now that I tend to forget its a rather strange moniker.

But I feel there will be enough of us around who have chosen strange names that this will prove less embarrassing and for people feeling socially awkward it seems to be a pretty good icebreaker.

0
goosefat101 | 27 November 2009 - 11:14am

Then I'll be reverting back to…

… Larry Heliotrope for the night.

0
David Rothon | 27 November 2009 - 12:23pm

Five-Centres

Is actually my real name.

0
Five-Centres | 27 November 2009 - 1:02pm

cheers!

Might be an idea!

0
Vorgongod | 27 November 2009 - 12:00pm

Wait a minute

Are you suggesting you are less than God-like in person? Say it isn't so! You do at least look vaguely Vorgon-ish though, right?

0
Occam | 26 November 2009 - 1:37pm

old t-shirt joke

Shame it's Buddha and all that...

0
Vorgongod | 27 November 2009 - 12:01pm

Go on, admit it, this is what swung it, wasn't it?

"The exterior is fairly typical with the exception of striking green tiled walls. Inside, above the U-shaped counter, are rare snob screens"

0
skirky | 26 November 2009 - 2:50pm

It wasn't the "snob screens"

that made me think The Lamb would be ideal for a get-together...honest!!!

0
Retro Man | 26 November 2009 - 3:33pm

But they're very useful…

… if you're entertaining a lady with whom you shouldn't really be seen. Those Victorians thought of everything..

0
David Rothon | 26 November 2009 - 4:20pm

A lady with whom you shouldn't be seen, you say?

It's extraordinarily tempting, as ever since Hannah described herself as a slightly overweight Kate Winslet I've had a hankering to find out if it's for real or not, but I'm not sure the FPO will buy that particular excuse for nipping out for a swift half. If anyone's in Ipswich on the 22nd though, perhaps we could engage in one of a series of simultaneous country-wide Word-inspired rounds. Snug bar of The Dove. I'm buying.

0
skirky | 27 November 2009 - 9:47am

Honest, it's true!

Although (and I hate to admit it) I suppose it's less true that it used to be. I used to get comments all the time back in the late 90s when I was somewhat slimmer and Ms Winslet's hair was somewhat darker.

Ten years and two kids later (yes I know Kate's got kids too, but also probably a personal trainer)... hmmm. I definitely wouldn't make a special trip to London!!!!!

Anyway, you've made my morning, I needed a good chuckle.
All the best!
Hannah

0
Hannah | 27 November 2009 - 11:45am

Hannah is being too modest

Though I was three sheets to the wind by the time she arrived I can testify, as I am sure Luna, Carl or Azeem will, that she is lovely. For a Beatles fan.

0
Twangothan | 27 November 2009 - 12:51pm

I concur

Although when Hannah walked in and joined us I can't say I thought "Aha, Kate Winslet has revealed herself as a Word reader".

0
Carl Parker | 27 November 2009 - 1:38pm

Ah, but ten years ago it would have been a different story...

you'd have been CONVINCED I was Kate

(blimey, even I'm starting to doubt myself now)

0
Hannah | 27 November 2009 - 10:02pm

Ha ha!!

Everyone seems lovely when you're drunk! Youse my besht mate you are ;-)

0
Hannah | 27 November 2009 - 10:00pm

Ooh, The Dove

I heart The Dove - haven't been in there for ages though. Thanks for reminding me - I'll be sure to call in next month when I'm back Suffolk-side

0
Joe R | 28 November 2009 - 11:42am

I'm in...

Start time? 7pm or earlier??

0
Richie B | 27 November 2009 - 11:47am

Oooooh that's a good one

Suppose it depends what time everyone knocks off work, I'd imagine you'd want to go straight from work rather than having to hang around?

The last one started from 6, but we had some late attendees (including me!) arriving up to 8 ish...

0
Hannah | 27 November 2009 - 12:02pm

I don't live in London but

can probably get there by 7pm if there are no leaves or snow on the tracks.

I shall probably wear what I'm wearing in my photo, no not the red Ultraman get-up, but my favourite Little Steven's Underground Garage T-Shirt.

Otherwise you can look out for a balding, middle-aged Frank Black lookalike with a beard wandering around the pub.

0
Retro Man | 27 November 2009 - 12:24pm

Frank Black lookalike

My brother is a Frank Black lookalike with a beard so I'll remember that one

0
Richie B | 27 November 2009 - 12:47pm

Bring him along...

for a beer too then.

0
Retro Man | 27 November 2009 - 1:03pm

He's in Manchester

200 miles away-and he's off the beer at the moment...

0
Richie B | 27 November 2009 - 3:51pm

Hmmmm...

maybe if I was off the beer I wouldn't be a Frank Black lookalike.

0
Retro Man | 27 November 2009 - 4:15pm

In diary

So I have no excuses regarding forgetfulness.

0
Leedsboy | 27 November 2009 - 2:14pm

can I come along please?

don't post much but be nice to have a drink and a chat with some Word types.

0
simon kumar | 27 November 2009 - 2:50pm

Of course!

The more the merrier!

0
Twangothan | 27 November 2009 - 4:05pm

Seconded!

There's no minimum post limit. Posters and lurkers equally welcome, see you there!

0
Hannah | 27 November 2009 - 9:30pm

Mission Control has processed my application

and I have an 'approved' stamp.

Although I have a list of Wife and Daughter drafted 'Don'ts For Dad In Unmonitored Social Situations'

- Don't giggle
- If you do giggle don't end with a snort
- Don't mention your bloody guitar
- Don't bore anyone
- Don't mortally offend anyone by being overly ironic
- Don't... just don't...

I'm quite excited now. I may have my monthly bath early as a treat for eveyone.

1
Beezer | 27 November 2009 - 9:53pm

Lovely. I am a Massive (in all senses) noob, so...

...I'm still feeling my way around this place. Word is the greatest magazine I've ever read, and the only one I've ever felt the need to subscribe to, so very keen to meet fellow readers.

:-)

0
Bob | 2 December 2009 - 8:52pm

oh, and Thursday 21st is my birthday

... so I'd hope the lovely lady with whom I share a house, bed and two small children might have plans for me on the Thurs. You only attain the big three-two the once. Unless you're a Buddhist, I suppose.

0
Bob | 2 December 2009 - 8:53pm

Just nudge to get it back in the frame

Remember the 22-1-2010!

0
Lunaman | 10 December 2009 - 9:27am

Happy New Year all

Looking forward to raising a glass with you on the 22nd - three weeks of grind away, but something to look forward to!

Cheers!

Twang

0
Twangothan | 4 January 2010 - 11:49pm

Keep the thread up there

Only 17 days to go.

0
Carl Parker | 5 January 2010 - 7:59pm

I'm going to start a new thread...

...cos there's a lot in this one about arranging the date etc.

Hoping if I start a new thread it'll make it easier for me to actually figure out who's coming so I can reserve an area.

So: please go here and sign up:
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/whos-coming-word-bloggers-beer-fes...

0
Hannah | 5 January 2010 - 10:27pm

sorry to pull out at this late moment

but unfortunately stuff has come up and I can't come.

That said I am up for future meet ups so please keep em coming.
