Fancy a pint in London, Friday 10th June?
Posted by Hannah on 31 May 2011 - 10:30pm.
Helloo! Do you like drinking ale? Eating cake? Talking nonsense? The Londonish Massive are meeting up Friday 10th June and we're hoping you'll be there.
If you've not been to a London mingle before, then please join us! We've already got a number of new faces promising to come to this one, so how about you too?
All the details in the post below... along with the sign-up sheet...
See you then. Mine's a sparkling water.

And there's more...
The time is straight after work kicks out (i.e. 6pm onwards. if you want to come along later, no worries, we'll probably be there until 11pmish, depending on last trains).
The venue is The Prince Arthur, Eversholt Street, Euston.
More on the pub: http://www.golden-p.co.uk/
Walk into the pub and turn left - the whole of the left-hand side is reserved for us.
Location: http://www.golden-p.co.uk/location.htm and Google map.
Based on an earlier thread, this is who I reckon is coming. Apologies if I've missed you out, just put me right!

Me. And you?
New for this Mingle: (not obligatory by any means)
Massive Music CDs
Make a CD of your favourite tunes. Burn lots of copies. Pop them on the music table. Help yourself to others' CDs. (Idea shamelessly nicked from NW Mingles. It's a goody)
Book Swap
Bring a book or two that you've finished with. Leave them on the table for someone else to enjoy. Pick up a book that you might love.
See you there!

I'm in
We can talk about this band idea that seems to have gone completely awol!
Oh. Yeah. About that.
Sorry. My life's been a bit mental lately. It's been a bit hard to get organised to sort it out.
I am normally MUCH better at life than this.
*sheepish face*
Aw, no worries :)
Hope life is treating you better. But - come on, let's sort this blooming thing out, soonish!
Seconded
That would be ace. Be good to natter tomorrow, looking forward to meeting you, Stick!
Good idea...
...This could be the first band in history where not all the members know what all the other members look like. So a bit of saying the word 'Band!' to each other in the preliminary stages might be wise, if only for basic identification purposes!
That's a plan...
Maybe we need a secret handshake?
I think I might come along
I think I might come along to this too.
I would suggest all band members enter the pub whistling (a la that Fellow from 'The Wire')...
But I am unable to whistle...
So I will instead suggest we all dress as characters from 'The Mikado'...
I won't be there
But I'm looking forward to seeing the Mikado costumes.
I see Bob's name isn't there...
... I was tempted to inflict a CD of prime folky pish towards him, in the assumption that he'd be too polite to hurl it back at me in horror. Oh well, maybe next time...
Sadly
Mr Bob has had to drop out. However, I'm thrilled you can come to this one, it's been ages and you've been missed. Please will you bring a few wedding photos? I'd love to see them!
We haven't had them actually printed yet!
But I'll see what I can do. I scrubbed up nicely though...
*edit*
I should say though that the mother in law is visiting that weekend (another wedding on the Saturday). In the sixties she saw The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, a motown package tour and (Mrs G reckons) Bob Dylan on his Judas tour in 1966. Officially a better strike rate than anyone I know.
You should bring her along!
bet she's got some HORAs...
I'll be there
I think.
A bit late
Amazingly, I've got another do on that evening, but I'll definitely be there later. I might even persuade one of my colleagues to come along.
Yep
I'm there!
I'm in.
Shall I do a pie?
YES PLEASE
please please pleeease,
the last one was ace.
Save me a slice
I had to miss the last one through illness and I may be a bit late as I'm away on a course on Thursday / Friday and so won't be turning up straight from work.
YES!
I didn't get any pie last time. I DEMAND PIE!
I shall be bringing
choccie peanut treats first tried at the NW Massive meet
PLUS I shall be producing an A-Z illicit music DVD collection. From AC\DC to Zappa there will be 2 of each artist and everyone should take at least one under pain of death. If you have any particular requests then get in touch. Particularly any Costello obsessives that need some of my "special stuff"
Oh and Melrose Ape will probably drag his 'arris down from the lofty heights of Islington. And Tedward will be there with his badge on
I fancy a pint in London...
...so I shall be there
"I'll Be There...
I'll be there
Just call my name
And I'll be there"
Um.
Might be able to make it after all! And how could I resist a CD of folky pish? I'll keep you posted.
*Strokes beard*
With a hey nonny no! A roving you will you!
I will be there
with CDs, books and hopefully some of Mrs Shoes macarons. (tbc)
And if I carp on about not drinking, shove a glass of alcohol in my hand and tell me to belt up.
Alas
I shall be unable to provide representation from the office this time round as I have a prior commitment. I will encourage the others to put in an appearance, however.
This is a must
I'll be there. I'll bring along a book or two.
Excuse my ignorance of such matters, but the last time I made a music collection for anyone it was on a cassette tape where the process spoke for itself. (Used to sell them at school for a few bob)
When using Itunes to do the deed, does one create an audio or a data disk? Does one or the other get around any copy restrictions that apple impose?
Burn playlist
If you make a playlist then burn it it creates an audio disk, even including Apple restricted tracks. And if you go to Print you can print off the track listing! Peasy.
But beware
Whilst Apple restricted tracks will burn, they will only do so a total of seven(?) times in the same playlist.
And seven copies of your lovingly crafted CDs won't go far at a Massive do...
Tip - show 'kind' when putting together your playlist and weed out any protected AACs if you plan to burn more than seven copies.
Also - Apple's cover art/tracklisting tools are a useful time saver, but beware of long titles which truncate the artist's name. Your friends will be glum if they can't work out who the artist is!
I've already mentioned this
but I'm gutted at not being able to make it this time. Seeing as I'm - gulp - being a best man the next day, it's probably advisable I go and see the groom rather than have a few jars with you lot.
Anyway, hope you all have a smashing time and hopefully see you at the next one :)
Probably a bit late...
...but here's my favourite best man joke for you.
"So, when xxx asked me to be best man, and I got to thinking about my speech, I thought I'd best learn a bit about my audience. So I asked xxx if he could give me a list of all the people who would be here today, broken down by age and sex."
"Joe" he said to me, "They've ALL been broken down by age and sex."
I thangyew.
Heard at my friends wedding
this may be old and I'm the only one who hasn't heard it, but it mad me me laugh.
My mate was best man for his brother and during his speech he looked at him all serious and said "don't forget Rob, there's a new word in your vocabulary from today. Adultery"
Hope you all have a great time
Work demands that I'm elsewhere.
Here's my favourite best man line, as used by my brother at the start of his speech at my wedding - "This makes it the seventh time today that I have risen from a warm seat, with a sheet of paper clutched in my hand ....."
I hope to be there in body
It's the day after my final degree assignment is submitted so I'll either be up for a celebration or fast asleep in the corner.
I'll be there
With CDs. Have you seen my YouTube embeds? You have been warned.
Would love to be there...
but we're going to a 'Gourmet Evening' at a local Turkish restaurant. I've never equated Turkish cuisine with the word 'gourmet' before, so it should be interesting.
I hope everyone has a great time, don't drink too much and, if you're driving, remember to take the car.
I'm sure it'll be a delight
Geddit? Turkish... Delight... Pah, I'm wasting my best material on you ungrateful so-and-so's.
You should have been on the stage
It left 10 minutes ago.
I'll be there
replete with books and cd's to distribute.
As ever, I'll be early in and early out. But I'll be there long enough to meet most of you.
I'm really looking forward to it. I've already had me haircut and will bring the quarterly bath forward especially.
I 've had a job up north postponed
so am hoping to make it. Are name badges supplied or do I have to cut up a cornflakes box and tape a safety pin to the back?
I really should come
along but I had a work networking thing with ex-colleages pencilled in that evening and maybe that would be more useful given present circumstances, but will see next week. If I do come, shall bring books but can't do cds given the buggered up state of my itunes folder.
Seeing as you asked nicely
I've booked the day off and everything. Not sure what I can do re. CDs and books given my personal circumstances. I could do you a little dance or something (*this may be a lie).
PS I'll remind "indiejules84" in case she's free. Hastings Massive in full effect and all that.
I'm tempted to see if we can bring along Tyrone, my inflatable rubber Tyrannosaurus Rex, which Jules gave me for my birthday, but he gets a bit shy around strangers. And he drinks like a fish.
I will be there
got cd's for Drakeygirl and Beezer and hope to do a general one to tickle the fancy of the rest of the massive - warning to Bob, might contain bearded bollocks.
Don't worry, Steve.
Assuming I make it, I'm going to be providing two CDs: one will be an enormously self-indulgent "Desert Island Discs" disc of stuff that means a lot to me from different stages of my life, and the other will be POP, POP and NOTHING BUT POP. And yes, that means Britney Spears, among much else.
Although on past form, I wouldn't be surprised if she'd grown a beard.
Lets wear the same shirt
It's always fun.
Would you both get in it?
I've got your JJ Cale cd, Steve
and I shall also have a raft of Hamish and Dougal stuff for Bob (if he shows)
Also, I will burn a few cd copies of 'The Sound is in You' by The Grip Weeds to hand out indiscriminately.
And books. I'll bring some books to give away.
Newbie alert
Would love to come along - promise to be less flippant than I am on here.
A good mate of mine who reads this blog frequently would like to come too, please - he goes by the handle "Son of Allan".
Hope that's ok.
It's very OK indeed
Look forward to meeting you both then! (all levels of flippancy allowed)
CD?
Sorry what's the CD? Is it a "my favourite songs" kind of thing?
Yes.
That is exactly what it is. NW Mingles do themes, so maybe we'll do the same in future months, but this time it's just "What I Love"
Whew!
I'm glad you said that!
[Gratefully stops racking tired brain for suitable themes.]
[Starts racking tired brain to work out what the hell its favourite songs are.]
*reads Specs_Beard's brain*
apparently your favourite songs are:
1) Black Lace - Agadoo
2) Su Pollard - Starting Together
3) Jive Bunny - Swing the Mood
;-)
Bloody hell
Organiser. Baker. And now mindreader.
You are a fearsome woman, Hannah. Fearsome.
I think I'm in too
...though I've said that before and failed to turn up. I'm hoping all conversations in the pub have a large thread title hovering over them and everyone has little 'up' buttons I can press where appropriate.
Love the book/cd swap idea. May bring the Stewart Lee book just to stoke up controversy.
I was thinking about coming to this one, but
I'm now a bit concerned about having my little 'up' buttons pressed, appropriately or otherwise.
If you bring it...
That's just to say, if you bring the Stewart Lee book
Yes, the Stewart Lee book.
If you bring the Stewart Lee book,
You know, that book by Stewart Lee,
The book Stewart Lee wrote,
The tome which Stewart Lee, if you like, *wrote*
Don't tell Lenny....
No, do bring it. It'll go down brilliantly.
Although it might take a couple of flushes.
Another newbie
About time I came to one of these events. Looking forward to meeting lots of people with excellent taste.
Splendid
see you next Friday!
Lots of people with excellent taste.
And me as well.
PS
Any special cake requests? If anyone's got a particular favourite cake, I'm happy to bake it...
Ummmmm
apart from CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!! I'm a sucker for a good old Genoa fruitcake
I'm still in
After a bit of a diary scare earlier today, I'm still available. CD's and books are being primed.
Hannah - feel free to make large amounts of the salty choc crunch thing. Deeeee-lish.
A swift Euston pasty, one leisurely pint, a yarn and off home?
Recipe for another good night.
You missed
scoffing a hand crafted, artisan pork pie.
If only
it wouldn't take me 24 hours of flying to get there.
Notes on my attendance
1: I will be there
2: I too insist that Hannah makes her salty chocolate crunchy thing
3: I notice a significant increase in numbers. Having missed out on a slice of Lenny's Pie last time I hope he caters for the increased numbers with a second (or third) pie this time
4: I need some encouragement pointed towards MrXSG who is hovering on the edge of breaking his mingle cherry.
Looking forward to it.
Mr XSG
Consider yourself duly encouraged!
This time I'm definitley going to make it!
See you there!
Anything going on during the day?
I can take a train up earlier if there's anyone up for a bit of rock n roll tourism.
Lenny: good call on the pasties, assume you mean in the station. They do lay down a good lining don't they?
I'm afraid to say that I'm out!
I've just heard that the latest delay to our never-ending, kitchen fitting nightmare means that the final work will be done on Friday 10th. There is no way that I can be anywhere else but at home if I want to continue living! Apologies to all - catch you at the next one.
the last time
I recall making a drrrrrunken arse of myself; so much so that I felt obliged to take a month long blog break afterwards. So this time I intend NOT to have four pints with workmates beforehand, to arrive promptly and compus mentis - and to retain a decent level of sobriety until 9.56 pm, by which point all bets will be off.
Ooh - and in case Lenny DOES make a pie and in case Lenny DOES bring some of his home-made piccalilli along to accompany it, I would like, nay- I would LOVE to bagsy the dregs.
21:57: All together now...
"We all live in a yellow submarine......"
Aha! You were drunk
I was told but a not inconsiderable number of people that you are *always* like that. :-)
As a newbie last time, I found your approach to mingling both refreshing and welcoming. I also possibly learned 3 completely new swear words and learned new ways of using five others.
Don't ever change.
guilty, I suppose!
Look forward to seeing you all! Gonna practise my swearing all week now so that I can make Malcolm Tucker blush:.)
Looking forward to seeing you, Vorgs.
Hope we can have our customary lengthy arseholed catch-up. :-)
I misread this
as arsehold catch-up. An entirely different thing.
If there is an arsehold catch-up
I promise to stream the whole thing on the net for you.
Yep
Quick response, as I am actually on holiday at the moment, but I should be there.
As I am away for a few days, I cannot promise to get a CD sorted in that time. How many copies are we doing, though, in case I can?
See you all next week, amigos.
x
HOORAY!
Completely looking forward to it! Delighted so many of you can make it. Will thoroughly miss those of you who can't, hopefully see you soon.
Particularly thrilled that it looks like we're going to have so many new faces - I promise you a warm welcome and a slice of something yummy. Come into the pub, turn left and say hello. (I'm the tallish shortish-brown-haired lass with glasses. Probably clutching a plate of cake.)
Leedsboy, VinceP, request duly noted, if I can I will whip up a batch especially for you.
I'll do a speacial Hannah cover
on my cd for you - sort of collectors item. In recognition of the organising and cake baking.
Splendid!
Hoping to get there this time!
[Crosses fingers, yet manages to keep typing]
Could I repeat JoLean's request - if I manage to get a CD playlist together, what's a sensible number of copies to bring? (I've missed the last two mingles, which I think means I was AWOL at the genesis of this idea!)
Um, I dunno.
The NW minglers try and make as many copies as there will be attendees. But given as we're normally somewhere around 40 people, that's a bit excessive.
Personally, I'm intending to make copies until I get bored of making copies / the cd burner gives out again. In other words, somewhere between 15 and 20.
Early doors...
Sorry Duffy but I'm on a dead cert that evening, depends what time me training course finishes...6 til 7 I reckon
I'm in
CD being sorted as we speak.
Mebbez
I might be in That London this weekend so may be able come along later on and bring felicitations from the North West crew. I would be in possession of a jalopy though, so as well as reprising my decidedly untypical Abstemious Chap impersonation, I would need to know where where I can park up. Would I be able to park in the nearby streets or is it a car park job ?
Dooooooooooooooooooooods!
Fantastic! It would be utterly lovely if you can make it.
I thiiiiiiiiink you can park in nearby streets... but Leedsboy has driven to mingles before so is probably the best person to advise...
The first left turn after the pub
(going towards main Euston Road\Station) has plenty of spaces that are free to park after 6:30 or on meter before then.
Doric Way - to be precise.
Or on other side of Euston Station there is parking on Euston Street after 6.30
Or Gordon Street opposite Euston Station after 6.30 there is loads by Bloomsbury Theatre after 6.30
Parking
The right turn just after the pub (Phoenix Street) if travelling away from Euston with the pub on the right hand side has a single yellow line on the road so is parkable. If you follow the road to the left (Werrington Road) there are quite a few parking bays there and I've always found one.
Thanks, peeps
That's all good information. Here's hoping I can see you Friday.
Cheers !
sorry I can't make it but I have a good excuse
It's naughty of you to organise it on the first day of the Download Festival at Donington. Maybe next time.
Dammit, it looks like you're going to have to start without me.
Am going to be stuck at home til much later than I'd like on Friday.
Hoping to be with you by 7.30, clutching cake*, matzo crack, ukulele and books. Ooooh, and the CDs I'm currently burning.
*this time, it's a proper old-fashioned Jewish traditional-style cheesecake.
"proper old-fashioned Jewish traditional-style cheesecake"
Ooh.. Ace. Proper, claggy, artery-hardening stuff, I hope.
Pie's in the oven as I type.
No CD's this time around but will donate
"Electric Eden" to the collective cause. Read it last summer. And if I can find it, Joe Jackson's autobiography is around the house somewhere.
Bagsied
.
I am anguishing over the book thing.
When I read something ok, I tend to charity shop it afterwards (most of my books come from charity shops anyway). The stuff I love I tend to want to horde. And the stuff I haven't read, I can't press onto anyone with a clear conscious. Out of what I have read recently, you ain't getting none of my Norman Lewis and I'm not sure that "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" is in the spirit of pressing on vital reads. It was just "fine."
Oh dear. This will bother me.
No stress intended
It's entirely voluntary. And I completely appreciate where you're coming from on the book thing, I get a bit like that.
But a book has to show...
... generosity, good taste, an understanding of the type of person you are pressing it to, intelligence and literary sensibility!
And I'm sure everyone here has read War and Peace at least twice...
I thought...
...the idea of the book thing was to get rid of things like Dexter that you didn't want/like. We've all got difference tastes after all. One man's Tolstoy is another man's Dan Brown and vice versa.
*goes back to the latest Jilly Cooper on her desk*
Hmmm....
*gathers vast pile of Ian Rankin, Val McDairmid, Jeff Lindsay etc*
If I remember...
...I'll be bringing "In Their Own Write" for jimmyshoes. Unforchewnuttley I've just had a big book clear-out, so that's the best I can do.
You have
a fine memory. And I will have a spanking new copy of everyone's favourite comic, Mr Stewart Lee, for Hannah.
Due to wife's work commitments the macarons are off. We may have to make do with a Macarena.
Brilliant!
cheers Jimmy!
Won't be gracing you with my presence I'm afraid
My negotiations with Mrs Toro didn't go well so I'm being forced to sacrifice a night out with you lot in favour of Fat Gary's Band in Manchester on Saturday night, which I'm hoping to supplement with some retail therapy.
I hope you all have a spiffing time with lashings of cake and ginger beer.
*clicks imaginary down arrow*
Oh, big shame, was looking forward to a catch up. Hopefully next time.
Indeed so
I've sort of already got a provisional, tentative pass for the night next time round so fingers crossed. Just don't go and book it for Friday 9th September (Mrs T birthday the next day) or Friday 23rd September (Mrs T belated birthday dinner the next day). Apparently I can't be trusted to go out for two consecutive nights....
Anyone getting therre
early again tomorrow? I shall be there around 6
Daresay.
I only work 10 minutes away, so yep - I'll be there pretty early.
Oh, go on then.
Mr DG and I will force ourselves to catch an early train. On the proviso that neither of us will be held responsible for our actions after 9pm.
Me
I'll probably be there earlier than normal too as it will be straight from work (rather than pop home and change quickly). You lucky people will get to see me in my work dress and heels rather than jeans.
Me too.
Good
I always thought you'd suit a pair of slingbacks.
What a coincidence.
I am now EXTRA sad
that I won't be in attendance :(
I am extra sad too
that you won't be in attendance.
:-(
I won't be
too long after 6 if the trains are their usual punctual selves.
Maybe
That other thing I was going to has been postponed, so I'll be early-ish. Still won't be drinking much. Naturally, I'll be wearing shorts and sandals...
We're going to have to have a talk
Should be there 6ish too.
Bad News on the Dress Front
I am now going home first, so will almost certainly not be power-dressing. So not Dynasty-style shoulder pads and power suits, I'm afraid.
"No Dynasty style shoulder pads and power suits"
You speak for yourself...
I'll be there about 6
In mufti.
Matron.
Oh and...
...I simply don't have time tonight to think about my favourite things, compile them and burn, so going to do a 'soul' compilation. As many as I can get burned tonight (after compiling it).
So, is it fancy dress
or not? I need to get the mothballs out of the gorilla suit if it is.
yes it fancy dress
the theme is 'Richard & Linda Thompson'. There'll be a prize for best costume (aside: not really)
Shame!
I have the beard. Ish. Bit of creative expansion with one of Mrs Specs_Beard's skirts and I could've in fact come as 'Richard & Linda Thompson'.
And possibly spent the evening barely speaking to myself.
Last minute addition
I'm hoping to be able to make it to this mingle, it's the first one which hasn't clashed with my schedule. I'm heading up from deepest darkest Sussex and I aim to give FOPP a glancing blow on the way as I've read such glowing reports ...
Should Crewing call me in the morning then it's all change, but for now - see you tomorrow.
Cheers, Chris
Welcome!
Be great to meet you tomorrow, crewing permitting...
So
I have some "special stuff' for Jolean, Bob, Steve Turner, Hannah and Drakeygirl. So sidle up to me at some point and request it
That doesn't preclude you from snatching stuff from my DVD box (missis) so please everyone, help yourself
damn!
I tried to DM you DFB for some special Elvis C but the blasted capcha stopped me on my blackberry....oh well, pot luck it is.
The Pie is made.
The hotel is booked.
The books have been chosen.
My liver will be gently primed tonight.
I've called the pub to check that a bottle of Manzanilla is on ice and ready.
Let the countdown begin.
Latecomer
Hoping to be there myself too.
Splendid!
See you then!
um well probably
I'm in exeter tomorrow and will be at the mercy of South Western Snailways or whatever it's called now, so I should be there by about, ooh, Tuesday. Don't wait up.
I should make it up to the big city by 7:30
Hope they haven't run out of ale by then ;-)
It's Lenny's pie
I'm worried about. Bloody lovely it was last time. I doubt it's going to last till I get there.
Just for you
I emailed the pub today, and gently requested that there be real ale and plenty of it.
They said, "We have 2 [new real ale barrels] going on last thing tonight so will be ready for tomorrow + a spare if 1 other runs out, so we should have between 2 (minimum) and 4 (maximum) out of 4"
:-D
Sounds good
But what are the rest of you having ?
Cool...will you put my name
on one barrel then please...
And ask them
to actually reserve that side of the pub for us rather than letting any old bugger take the big table that we could use for food and general bringa nd buy sale
Have mentioned this to the pub before
And they've said, if people are sitting in our reserved seats, have a word with the bar staff and they'll find them another table on the other side of the bar.
I'm probably going to be late tomorrow so if someone could keep an eye on table nabbers for me, I'd appreciate it
Leave it to us
we'll repel all boarders (missis)
Wait for Leedsboy to turn up.
Thirty seconds of Lee staring at them and they'll soon move.
Cheers chaps
(Lenny, maybe you should bring some of your implements from work and wave them around, that would probably help repel them too)
Maybe
he'll scare everyone away if his arse is still hanging out.
I won't tell them
I'm a pacifist.
I will be there at 6pm
replete with a compilation cd for the masses and other poices for Drakeygirl and Beezer.
Huzzah!
I have done two CD's. One "vaguely cinema related," the other "just stuff I like. Funk features heavily." The gods of folky pish were not smiling upon me and inspiration was sadly lacking.
I have even solved my books quandry (I think). At least one of my books better inspire a scramble anyway...
I have also done two CDs.
They are both compulsory, otherwise I'm going to be carrying lots of heavy things home.
Very sorry
but I'm bailing yet again. Got to get up at oh-fuck-hundred-hours to drive to Aberystwyth to collect Fatboy Minor fron uni. What larks, Pip.
Hope you all have a great time. I will be thinking of you all tonight as you tuck into Lenny's fantastic looking pie and Hannah's soggy bottom (see Twitter).
Haha!
Sorry you won't be there, hopefully another time.
Definitely in
Looking forward to meeting you all for the first time. Should be there 6.30ish. Wearing my work clobber, which is surprisingly similar to my home clothes. Recognise me by the geeky t-shirt.
Unfortunately I have failed on the CD front, though I have 2 Massive-friendly books instead.
I am intriguied
How geeky is your t-shirt? Are the washing instructions in binary or something? ;-)
I am NOT happy
with my CD...I left it too late and henceforth was scrabbling around at one o'clock in the morning trying to segue Max Romeo & The Upsetters into Black Flag and quite frankly it was all a bit of a mess.
Sorry but instead of a This Is ME,ME,ME CD, all you're going to get is a playlist I knocked up to stick in the car.
Anyway, good news is that there is *hardly* any "old" but it's all a bit samey...anyway, I'll do a better one for next time....
I too have failed on the CD front
Too much time spent trying to choose a t-shirt to wear
Well, your last one was a hit...
But will it beat Fortuneight's Tesco-bought Ramones T-Shirt I wonder??
I don't know
But seeing as I haven't found a suitable Stax t-shirt, it's going to be Tubeway Army or Danny Baker's All-Day Breakfast Show.
Tell me about it...
I made a serious T-Shirt faux-pas last week. I was backstage chatting to The Len Price 3 and they were telling me about their experiences with Little Steven Van Zandt who runs the band's label Wicked Cool. Singer Glenn does a fantastic Sopranos style impersonation by the way.
I suddenly realized I was wearing my trusty Wicked Cool Records/Little Steven's Underground Garage T-Shirt - I felt a right dork.
I've always been very careful to avoid wearing the T-Shirt of a band that I am going to watch - never understood the merchandise buyers who pull on the tour T-shirt over their shirt and tie before a band comes on stage - but there I was wearing a band's label's T-Shirt...these things DO matter!
I see your point
However I don't mind wearing a band's t-shirt at one of their gigs if it's an old one.
It was a five year old L7 t-shirt that led to me spending half an hour with Gail Greenwood in the Arsenal club shop in Finsbury Park, minutes after L7 had finished their set supporting Kiss.
2 CDs Compiled
No cover art because I can't get MSWord to behave on my new laptop.
I also have some duplicate cover CDs from *whispers* other publications to give away and a couple of other dupes from my CD library.
See you later.
It was looking distinctly iffy
earlier today, as I spent most of the day in A&E with MrG and his broken shoulder-blade. But I'M STILL COMING!
*scatters diazepam and chocolate buttons indiscriminately, and fills bag with CDs*
Should be with you around 7. I'll need a stiff half of cooking lager.
Arrrgh. not coming.
Have reluctantly accepted that I have too much on to come - been out every night this week including night away on biz and have college reunion (away) tomorrow night then a gig Sunday night then friends coming Monday evening. Have fun all. Deffo next time tho....
Aaaarrrgghhh
I'm still stuck at home, husband still nowhere near to take over on babysitting duties. Going to be late late late. Rats. Feel like I'm missing my own birthday party!!
Sorry, haven't made it
Friday traffic on the M25, late collection in Wembley and I couldn't leave a van full of kit just anywhere so I had to come back home to Sussex. I promised myself beer, cake, pie and CDs for tonight but at least the children were glad to see me. Can we do one in August? I do absolutely nothing in August. Hope you are all having fun.
Shame!
Hopefully see you at the next one. I'd been thinking september rather than august though as I suspect many will be away in august...
HOORAY!
I had a brilliant night (despite being 2 hours late, grrrrrr, gnash gnash), thank you all so much for coming.
Particularly lovely to see so many new faces... It was great to meet you, I really hope you all enjoyed yourselves and that we'll see you at the next one!
The books and CDs looked like they went down really well - everything had gone by the end of the night. What with the sing-song, game pie and other sweet nibbles, I think these Massive nights out are turning into mini-festivals ;-)
If you're not already on the London Mingle mailing list, just drop me a DM and I'll add you (for things like a heads-up of when the next date-choosing thread goes on the board).
Have a great weekend
Love
Hannah xxxxx
Many newbies met!
Much pish spoken, much fun had, much music snaffled!
Thanks again folks!
Fantastic night
The cd's and books were an added bonus as was the fact that when I got back to Lichfield at 11.35 my taxi was actually waiting for me. Special mention to Hannhas wonderful cheesecake and Lennylaws terrific pie with an amazing relish. Still missed out on meeting and chatting with everyone there which is becoming increasingly more difficult to do as the numbers grow.
Well done Hannah
and well done us. We're officially great fun.
I had a ball and I'm going to buy Dark Side of the Moon today to test my Pink Floyd aversion (test my Meddle, so to speak). Thats one of the many things that I love about a mingle - so many different views in such polite company. And cake.
picture the scene
You're waiting for the central line in Oxford Circus around midnight. A fat pissed bloke with a silly smile on his face sits down beside you. He opens his satchel with a 'Now to peruse my bounty,' look and then let's out a wail of anguish. He starts to frantically pull cds out of his bag.Everything, and I mean everything is covered in Lenny Law's piccalilli. He licks and slurps the condiment off the cds, wiping and wailing all the while. Revolted, you get up and find another seat.
Apart from that - well, I had the most wonderful time.I could have stayed til dawn and today I'm having the best of times wading through the treasure chest of music I picked up last night.
Massive, you are lovely lovely people and you have superb taste.
Yours, besmeared with tumeric
Vorgongod.
Besmeared With Tumeric - TMFTL
I also had an accident with lenny's pickle. Just as I was finishing my slice of pie, the jelly slithered out and landed on my t-shirt. In my haste to scrape it off I neglected to notice my fork was covered in pickle. Hope it washes out OK.
There's easily enough double entendres up there to last you through the weekend, I reckon.
I got to the mingle early, for a change, and had a fine time. Beer, pie & pickle, cheesecake (scrumptious - Hannah strikes again), CDs, DVDs (thank you DogFacedBoy), books and plenty of inconsequential natter. Vorgongod & I agreed that Phil Collins has been given a harder time by posterity than he really deserves. I have not forgotten that Mr V wants to do a CD trade and I will get in touch by PM.
I concurred with a view expressed by a few others that my festival-going days are over because I can't be doing with the camping aspect of them any more.
I was laden with top-quality swag when I got home at about 12.45, having narrowly avoided sleeping past my Harrow-on-the Hill train change on the Metropolitan line and ending up in (shudder) Uxbridge.
21 CDs (Blimey! I'll need a bigger hard drive soon), 4 DVDs (Beefheart, Zappa, Tom Waits and XTC - excellent!) and a couple of promising books. That lot should keep me out of mischief for a while!
So when can we do it all again?
Mr Vorgongod, If you want to get in tocuh
via email or DM in some way then I'll sort you out some Costello goodies
And the first DVDs to 'sell out' from my stash - Zappa. Shoulda known.
Left the Tardis in among the books on the shelf in the pub. Wonder if it will still be there whehn we return. And if it has dematerialised......
Just noticed
that Mr V has no "Contact" tab on his profile, so my promise to DM him will depend on him contacting me first.
Awaiting your message, Herr Vorgongod.
Heartfelt thanks
To absolutely everyone bar none for the great company, the warmth, erudition, the mounds of kit and the food.
Special gold stars from me have to go to Steve Turner for the Jack Rose cd. A grand gesture from someone who received in return a naff looking copy of a JJ Cale album he's got on vinyl already. Way to go Beezer - you twat.
To Drakeygirl for the badge! And for restraining herself on this occasion from pointing out I'm from Newcastle. It's ever so sweet of her but I had noticed this already.
To Hannah for the cheesecake which was so delicious it may actually have invoked a superpower within me. Not sure what this might manifest as but I suspect it won't be 'Seriousness' or 'Maturity'.
To Lenny for the Game Pie. Game Pie: it was a Lottery to be one of the first in the queue for a slice, a Risk in fact, but the Operation went well and I was able to avoid the later Scrabble.
To Bob for shouting out 'Massive Tits' with great vim early on in the evening. He was of course referring to the pair of us and was not being the least bit shallow and offensive. The big Hurmur...
I was delighted to meet so many new faces and find them just as charming as the old. These are always the best of nights and, yes Retro, I will attempt a TVM.
Thank you, one and all.
Vinyl was sold long time ago
Beezer - I had Troubadour on vinyl so was greatly appreciated you gave me a cd copy as it is my favourite JJ Cale album.
Hope you like the Jack Rose disc - it might take a couple of listens. My first impression was lukewarm but it is a grower.
Masters Of Our Domain
I'd like to be the first to declare last nite the best Mingle yet in that there London. The pub actually reserved the whole area for us so no strong arm tactics were needed to keep outsiders at bay.
Was much easier to move about and meet everyone and the 'Blue Peter Bring and Buy' style table went down a storm. There was so much stuff that three tables had to be employed
Big thumbs up as usual for Hannah for getting everything sorted and everyone who stepped up to the plate and bought CDs, books, pies , cakes or just simply came along after a visit to 'Transform'. Here's not many more nights of talking nonsense, nonsense, nonsense!
BTW as one of the few stone cold sober people I remember a lot of drunken confessions so brown envelopes of cash to the usual address. behind the 3rd cistern, Victoria Station etc.
And if you don't like the fact that it was in London WELL MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!!!!!!!!!!!
'up'
What splendid people, thank you to everyone for CD's, food, friendly demeanours and such.

A marvellous evening. It was great to put faces to so many names, and yet there were so many people I never got to speak to. 4 1/2 hours went by in what felt like 10 minutes. Particular thank you's go to
Drakeygirl - for the badge
Topjukes - for explaining to me how you can play vinyl with lasers
DogFacedBoy - for the DVDs
Bob - for the pint which I wasn't able to reciprocate (next time ...)
Lenny Law - for seeking me out to show me the BOC logo that he'd baked on his pie (sadly I missed out on eating any)
Everyone else I chatted to - hope I didn't talk too much bollocks
And a big thanks to Hannah for the food and organisation. Put me down for the next one.
Another fine evening indeed
Thanks as always to Hannah for organising and the provision of dessert goodies; Lenny for the pie; Drakey for the badge that I proudly wore home; everyone for the heap of swag that found its way into my bag; and not forgetting the beer - Bob, you bought me two last night so I owe you next time.
Thanks also that the fuckwit who lobbed a half full beer can in my direction cycling home last night clearly couldn't hit a snowflake in a blizzard.
your cd phil
Is an absolute beaut. Top man!
Presumably improved
by a light coating of piccalilli
Lovely evening ....
Many thanks to all of you for making me feel so welcome; I had a blast, and today the turntable in't spinning not once as I have a clutch of CDs to listen to.
So far I'm *really* impressed; particular favourite has been the moisture-related item with sky-blue menu. Sorry, I can't remember who gave that one to me but it's great!
Roll on the next one ...
Woo yay etc
Really enjoyed it, lovely to meet so many of you; will deffo come again to try to meet those I didn't. Thanks to Hannah for organising and caking; will try to get there earlier to try some of the pie next time (looked lovely).
Unfortunately, I have a (bad) habit of placing items mischeviously when a bit tiddly. The Milky Bar ended up leaning on someone's fence last night, still in the wrapper. Might have to go and tidy up after myself later...
Some memories of the evening...
It was good to be back
Missing the last one was a major blow, so it was good to return to the bosom of the Massive family and be welcomed.
Well done to all those who provided food, and CDs. Sorry I could only bring 4 CDs, but you make plans and then life gets in the way.
Lovely cakes, Hannah and whoever else provided the. Thanks to Lenny for so kindly offering to make me an individual pie next time after I arrived to find a piece NOT saved for me.
Special thanks to whoever provided the Roy Harper CDs. I did ask around a bit but couldn't find out who it was. I've not heard that performance before and the sound quality is excellent; additionally the inclusion of Elizabeth in the set list is a major bonus. I am Sir / Madam, your humble servant.
A last minute addition
to my bag as I left the flat, hence only one copy of each disc. It's a duplicate I burned in error ages ago. I thought somebody'd like it and I was pleased to see it no longer on the table just before I left.
I particularly like the version on there of "Me And My Woman", which pushed me into getting a replacement for my long-lost copy of "Stormcock".
Next time
we will have to identify each other and discuss all things Harper.
Are you going to his 70th Birthday Bash @ the RFH in November?
Yay!
What a terrific evening.
I found myself in conversations about the Decemberists, baldness, psychotherapy, Theolonious Monk, underpants and bad drumming.
Not surprising, maybe, that the mingles are much like the site come to life, but now with bonus CDs and mouthwatering snack treats.
See you all again soon, I hope!
Yep
Another lovely evening: after my third one, I feel like an old-timer, as it were. Lovely to meet so many people I'd not met before, and fantastic to have not one, but two, conversations about my love of Stax.
Goodies galore too, so thanks to everyone for bothering to burn some CDs: will look forward to listening to all the ones I managed to nab.
Said this on Twitter but for non-Twats
if any of the DVDs are faulty then give us a nudge and I'll burn replacements. they all seemed to be ok but you can never trust technology. or rather my ability to use it.
Vote for the next Mingle date!
